This task is amazing, really makes you realise how difficult it is to connect cause and effect. And how easy it is to find false correlations.

Which was the point where animals started to use tools, which then separated the humans from animals. Which then allowed humans to gain knowledge of causing the effect of fire. Which also enabled us to increase our average world wide live expectancy from 35 years to 70 years within a decade due to research. While having people figuring out steam engines, electricity, computers and internet. Trial and error (like shown in the task) is the process to figure out cause and effects, to be able to get a predictable successful results in daily routines. Which basically makes Science and Engineering like needing to say a different letter at each step and clapping on every second red, to avoid setting of the alarm, and have the findings documented for everyone to be able to reproduce the result.

Extend this to real life problems such as COVID and Global Warming, where trial and error takes far longer, and it isn't hard to understand why we are in such a mess.

It's not actually that profound. This was a completely arbitrary and fabricated cause and effect. The only way to discover it would be through pure brute force trial and error. Figuring out cause and effect in real world situations where the cause and effect have some kind of rational relationship isn't the same. And the correlations they were observing were not false. The actions they observed did indeed take place immediately before the alarm triggered. So that is a valid correlation to consider. They just weren't the actions that were actually causing the alarm to trigger.

@@Rowgue51 But in a lot of real world cases the rationality of the relationship isn’t understood until long after the cause and effect is found. Look at the history of diseases. Knowledge of germs is relatively modern, and working out why everyone is dropping dead (is it bad smell? Bad food? Bad water? Bad air?) is pretty tricky stuff without that knowledge.

Alex Horne & his team are just brilliant for coming up with different exciting tasks each time. Not entirely sure but I don't think they've repeated a task in 11 seasons. Edit: Certain tasks have been repeated since Series 11. They're still a brilliant team regardless.

The previous season to this one had very weak tasks though. Most of them were too restrictive in the wording or too complicated, or both, which ended up making that season boring because the contestants were unable to come up of clever ways to solve the tasks without going against the restrictions.

When you remove all of those factors and all you have is an end (that in real terms serves no actual purpose in life). Then, getting from a beginning to an end without knowing how or why isn't by knowledge, it isn't by skill, it isn't by ability, it's by pure chance.

first time I've seen this task. but this might be my favorite due to the "simple but impossible" correlation.
