The chain method best insures no over, double or undercharges. You are opening yourself to problems with that spring.

I’ve had so many issues with this machine right out of the box. I’ve done many of your mods and each had made the press that much more reliable. Thanks, Appreciate it Quick question, have you loaded rifle cartridges as of yet?? Just wondering. Thanks again

No I have not. Most people online say that the pro 1000 can only do.223 but of course I have no experience with it.

...where do you get those springs and what is the proper name for them (so I can search online)??? Thanx

This is a great fix. My problem is that I bought a torsion spring from Mcmaster carr and it doesn't have enough spring to it. So watched the video again and your powder feeder moves real slick. Mine is tight moving. What can I do to make it move like yours?
@mshaw290808mi5 жыл бұрын
Yes I had the same issue with mine. I had to put shims between the upper and lower parts of the powder dispenser. Unless you are a machinist you probably do not have a box stainless steel shims laying around. I did not either so I used water bottles and pop cans to cut up for different thicknesses of shim stock to experiment with. It takes a lot of hand fitting to get it adjusted just right. Feeler gauges are useful to track progress and to ensure you do not get any gaps between your powder disc and your soft wiper located below your powder dispenser. You do not want powder leaking out of a gap!
@jeffhoover64595 жыл бұрын
What do you think about using feeler gauges for the shim stock? I know they are usually made from steel. Does that matter? You can buy them cheap for Harbor Freight.

When you buy an Auto disc powder measure on its own it comes with a tension spring underneath which returns the slide just like this. So you have to ask yourself why Lee omits it on the measures they supply with their progressive presses? The answer is simple. A slide relying solely on a spring to return it is not 100% positive and can sometimes stick, particularly when using longer grain tubular powders. Although undesirable, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue with a non-progressive press as long as you exercise good practice and check each case is charged before seating the bullet. It’s a big thing on a progressive though as you can’t normally see the powder in the case and you WILL produce an uncharged round if the auto disc has stuck open. The chain is a positive mechanical return and you’ll feel when you have problems with it, which is more than you will with spring alone. Lee has thought this through and has deliberately omitted the spring on powder measures supplied with their progressives so you, the user, isn’t tempted to do without the chain. In short, this mod, neat as it is, circumvents the precautions Lee has taken to prevent a primer powered round leaving a bullet stuck in your barrel.

According to the Lee Modern Reloading manual, they included the chain to prevent an accidental double charge

I took the one off my machine and measured it. You can but them on line at McMaster Carr part number 9271K606 Pack of 6 for $5.19 plus shipping. Here is the ling www.mcmaster.com/9271k606 As with all do it your self projects you might have to do some hand fitting. Good Luck!
