Lee Ranaldo can't stop creating. Here, he talks about the old days of Sonic Youth and the art he's making outside of music.
Note: Every now and then there is a weird hissing sound. It's not my audio equipment. It's literally some sort of off-and-on steam release in the room we were in. I still don't scientifically know why it was happening, and, frankly, I'm too afraid to ask.
* Apparently This Matters is an interview series by Jarrett Bellini. The concept it simple: I have a case filled with postcards. On the back of each postcard, I write different topics. We pick these cards at random. And then we talk.

sizzlemeat im not talking about his physical appearance, when I say that he still the same it's becouse he still acts like the same young dude that he was (even if his wardrobe didn't changed too).

*Lee Ranaldo is by far the 'soul' of Sonic Youth albeit I'm fairly sure that it was a variety of 'media' that brought that music to the world, not one person*

sexobscura Agreed! One of the couple of good things about SY’s breaking up is that, now, Lee really IS Free!!! Now I can listen to the dreamy, shoe gazing musical poetry of my favorite former SY member without Thurston & Kim always crowding the limelight.🥰👍

I think what Sonic Youth added to "alternative" or no-wave, was a youthful sonic sound. It was different then what other ppl were doing, and very much in its infancy. It very much explored a sonic landscape. Everything from Evol, to the Diamond Sea, is very sonic.

He’s talking about sonic youth sound. Sonic youth sound is different from any band around. Just because there is other guitarist with experimental tunnings they will not going to sound like sonic youth

I love Lee but he's wrong about Sonic Youth being original with punkish alternative tunings as Geordie Walker (Killing Joke) was already well onto that by the late 70s. Also Boyd Rice had already done experimental noise guitar with his home-made noise guitar contraption.

SY took it in a heavy and intense psychedelic direction, and it's likely that they hadn't heard any of that other stuff in the early 1980's. Non was known in Europe far more than the US until the late 1980's.
