I've learnt a lot about world wars and conflicts in past few years (thanks to internet) more than what I learnt in schools for decades. The truth about all sides, their history, ideas, ideologies,tactics, strength and alliances without bias, not what we leart in schools written by the winning sides. And its astonishing, mesmerizing, captivating and inspiring like in this movie.

 My father was conscripted, ajateenija in the Estonian Army Artillery in 1940 in Tartu. This was during the tense time of Soviet bases, then he was transferred to the Estonian Airforce as a motorized dispatcher in Tallinn. I recall my father telling me before he died that they were ordered by the Estonian Military command not to resist the Soviet Russian invaiders in June 1940. He said that Soviet soldiers confiscated his motorcycle and submachine gun. The Estonian military was automatically made apart of the Soviet military. Then when the Germans broke their alliance with the Soviets and attacked he was forced into the German military, Being treated as a 2nd class person my father fled got over the Gulf of Finland and joined the Finnish Army Valila Battalion Paiarei Division which eventually became JR200 and also took part with ERNA. I served in the US Army Military Police, in Honduras,Germany,Italy, USA. In my father's memory, as he did not live to see Estonian Independence reinstated,and I never got to meet my paternal grandparents, I was asked and volunteered to join the then-fledging Estonian Defense Forces Army Military Police to develop it ,which I did for 2.5 years 1995-97. I was the Provost Marshall of Tallinn and Paldiski. I also assisted with the Kaitseliit as well.

I don’t know if it’s a brilliant film, but it’s one I won’t soon forget. It will stay with me. I don’t know if it’s the bright, almost happy narration throughout that maintains the same tone despite the arduous journey of this young man. Perhaps it’s the bizarre ending, which finds this Estonian in Vietnam, accompanied by Memphis blues music, fighting as an Australian soldier. And I cannot understand all the hostilities between various parties that occurred thru til the end of May when the war in Europe ended on the 8th. All that said, thanks for making this remarkable film available. And kudos to the cinematographer- excellent work.

As a Finn only thing I can say to Eesti people... Kiitos... Aitäh... You paid unimaginably high price for you freedom and many even helped us to keep ours. It always pains me to see fellow finns looking down upon estonians, knowing what they went trough. What price they paid. And we, who remained independent feel all high and mighty laughing at "poor soviet estonians" as the mood felt to be good 20+ years ago or so.

@kristo1981
@kristo1981 6 күн бұрын
@warproductionscz Alright, as I couldn't find your contact information, I'll just write here fragments he told, maybe not exactly in the same order. He was born in 1926. In 1943, at the age of 17 he was in the army already. Once a bullet had grazed the back of his head, he had a scar there. When the war ended, Alfons Rebane had told his men: "Men! I have brought you out from 11 encirclements, and this one is the 12th." They dumped all their weapons, badges and military symbols and started moving to the west. They moved at nights, through forest, holding each others' hands. When somebody let the other's hand go, that part of chain was lost. At one occasion they (I don't know how many of them) had crossed a river on a raft with Russian soldiers, without symbols but still wearing German uniforms, but Russians didn't care, probably they didn't even notice. On the other side of river they were even provided a soup. In a farm they saw a pig and wanted to cook it but the only weapon they had was Panzerfaust, so they just blew the pig. When he was alone, Russians captured him and wanted a watch from him. That time Russians hunted Germans for wristwatches, some 'hunter' had arm full of watches. But he didn't have one, he took his boots off and showed that he really didn't have one, and then he was let go. Later he got to farm where a lady gave him plain clothes and a watch. Finally he swam across a river to American side, and the Americans took his watch away. Later he was a guard at Nuremberg trials where he guarded Rudolf Hess. He escorted Hess, chained to his hand. At some documentary it was said that Estonians were not present in court hall, so I don't know where exactly did he escort Hess, but these were his memories.

It was a beautiful homage from the Czech authors to the Estonian men, whose only option after our silent surrender to the Russians in 1940 was to fight their return in a foreign uniform. And whose martyrdom after the surrender of Germany was precisely in the so-called "Czech Hell", as the Czech insurgents understandably had no idea who those men in SS uniforms were and why they were there. The historical experience of Estonia and Czechoslovakia is the same and it is a warning to everyone who thinks that it is better to surrender to a violent usurper and bury your head in the sand. Freedom is a precious fruit and must always be fought for and protected. It is enough for bad people to win if good people do nothing. Let's remember that today. Because one of the initiators of World War II is trying to start a third one today. Once again, my thanks and my respect to the makers of the film. Above all, for understanding what happened.

There were also local pogroms against Jews in Poland. The authorities looked at it negligently. When the Jews rose up against the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto and were exterminated, the Polish underground structures did nothing to help them, but only watched silently from afar. When the Nazis retreated from the Soviets, Polish partisans in the AK did not practically fight against the Germans. In addition, the Germans supported the AK partisans with weapons, hoping that the AK would hinder the Russian advance. The Poles brutalized the German civilian population of Silesia. There is a published book available for purchase on Amazon: Der Tod sprach polnisch: Dokumente polnischerGrausamkeiten an Deutschen 1919-1949. You need to know the history of your country correctly.

Unbelievable! These people became heroes nowadays. I didn't expect it will happen so soon. They ask Russians to prove it once again.

Простенький фильм с бюджетом 1.000 евро 😊 Студенты режиссировали, снимали и играли. A simple movie with a budget of 1000 euros. The students directed, filmed and played.

Thank you for your comment. Let's just clarify that the budget was not 1000 Euro and the film was not shot by students.

Tegu on päris päris hea väikese eelarve filmiga. Ingliskeelne tõlge lonkab veidi ja läheb kohati eestikeelsest tekstist mööda, kuid muidu ok.

Poor guys , being forced to be nazi, eliminate all Jews and communists in Estonia and then for no reason at all get their heads kicked in by Stalin. The world's smallest violin was used in this movie.

Very good film. As he said, there were many people from Northern and Northern European countries who fought against the Russians in the waffenss who were not Nazis at all. Like the Baltic boys were just fighting for their freedom because the communist Russians were bad news which they proved time and again and the Northern Europeans therefore also only fought on the Eastern Front, never in the West. Unfortunately, it turns out that the Russians are not just bad news as communists. It is a nationalist thing that should no longer take place in this day and age. They did not learn well from ww2. At least Estonia is free today! 👍
