Thank you for a clear and well explained technique. I didnt want my adult dog to be harassed so i keep my puppy in a pen when during the day. and in a crate at night. I never thought about keeping play outside of the house but i really like the clear boundaries that this sets up. I live in an apartment and dont have a yard but i will make a greater effort to keep calm spaces separate from play spaces.

Some good information in this video. I have a five-year-old husky mix (Strider). He was raised alongside cats so I wouldn’t be shocked if he had a crisis of identity and actually believed he was a cat. We rescued two neglected pit bull mixes and didn’t realize that while they’d been crated together (for a whole year without light or heat), the female (Daisy) had gotten pregnant. So add a litter of 9 to that. Not kidding. We rehomed 8 pups and their father, kept the mother (Daisy) and one male pup (Rhys). At 9-ish months, Strider and Rhys are still not best buddies. Rhys adores Strider, but the overwhelming affection, play bows, invitational woofs, and basic pesterings visibly irritate the ever-loving kibble out of Strider. He snarls, snaps, bristles, grumbles (I think he gets this from being part GSD), and eventually just smacks Rhys so that he face plants into the floor. He also “scolds” Rhys for things he knows he’s at least forbidden to do. And Rhys gets into a lot of mischief despite any and all measures to prevent it. I figured it was normal, primal instinct for some adult dogs to just say, in his doggy way, “Look, kid. You’re botherin’ me. Shuddup or else your scruff gets roughed.” Wolves will bite on a cub’s snout when they get out of line or yelp if they’re being too rough. I just hope Strider doesn’t hate Rhys or resent me for keeping Rhys. If that’s a thing dogs do.

We adopted an 18 month female goldendoodle, 33 lbs. Six months later, we adopted two puppies, now 12wk Cavapoo 4 lbs and a 14 wk Cavachon 6lbs. We attempted to introduce the golden to the pups after a month of her observing them play from another rm and sniffing them while on our laps. On a leash, the golden chases, swats, nips and tries to stomp the pups. She is typically shy and fearful with other dogs. She seems to want to play but more often shows dominating versus playful behavior with the pups. She tries to get in their exercise pen and they are the only reason she barks in the house now. While they are on my lap or in their crates she calmly lays next to them. We will wait until the pups are larger and closer to six months old to try again but what to do then so eventually they can safely co-exist and play together?

So informative. I felt so inept because I've never had a problem with 6 other pups and an older dog. But we just got another puppy and for the first time we have 3 dogs in the home right now. They do not get along at all. I've never used a leash inside the house and we have a pen but it's in the basement and she only uses it when we're gone. So we will move it upstairs and put her in it during the day when we are home so she can see what the other dogs do. She is 5 months old and because I've never had a problem before I felt bad that she is nowhere close. Thank you

I wish humans could understand the importance of raising a calm puppy. So important. I have raised many puppies. I don't think its abuse they didn't play toys in the house. They walked on leash, socialized, trained, had fun but after fun was cate time for awhile until it was time to go out or be on leash with me. Usually till 4 months.

don't allow your puppy to play with toys in the house?? wow, give me a break, I have a Maltese puppy that was introduced to my 12 yr old shih-tzu today, they weren't on a leash, I held the puppy as my shih-tzu investigated, and let them both in the living room as I sat on the floor with them. Not one issue, thankfully unlike you my home is my dogs home, so guess what, they're allowed to play with toys inside, have had dogs all my life never a problem as far as behavior but apparently I'm doing it wrong..,....... well, according to you
@kierafitzgerald80626 жыл бұрын
You have to understand, these guys typically work with high drive dogs like the malinois, and working shepherds, not maltese and shih-tzus lol. If one of their high drive puppies goes and tries to play with one of their working dogs, it's going to get killed. These are practices that they use for safety. I personally wouldn't tether my dogs in the house when raising them, unless my puppy for some reason had a lot more drive. I have mellow retrievers though, so this wasn't an issue for me. It all depends on the kind of situation/dogs you have.

Frame 313 they are not saying that. You have to understand all dogs are different. The older dogs have thier toys. Dogs are territorial. I completely agree with everything they said. The puppy needs to be trained so you can correct a behavior before something bad happens. You cant just bring a puppy home and exspect the puppy to have social skills or know the rules or the order of the pack!!! Also once the puppy is accepted then the older dog will share. My dogs home is my home to. That has nothing to do with what they said.

Ignore them while they whine, once they’re quiet wait for 3 seconds of quiet and then reward them with whatever form of treat they prefer. Whether that’s a toy, or a little biscuit or even simply just verbal praise. It will take time, most puppies are very whiny, but doing this consistently will help. I have done this type of thing with my puppies and they eventually get the idea within a couple days of CONSISTENCY.

We do have another chihuahua who is over a year old (female) and they have been living together for a while but at first the older one growled, snarled and made the younger one cry when we first brought her kind of like she was bullying her. The older one at least what I have seen she wants to be the dominant one in the house and does like when people or dogs come over. My sister has a male chihuahua who is 1 year old and our older one always growls, charges and wines towards him (he ignores her). My wife says it’s okay and that she won’t hurt the new pup but I just don’t want that to affect our pug down the line where he becomes aggressive because of our chihuahua.

How will the puppy learn to chill, to back off, unless the established dog can also teach him/her to read "dog language"? This is assuming the dam of the litter did not discipline her pups at all, or that any resident male had no input either. Coming from a background in multiple sled dogs for decades, this is a curious approach that seems to delay learning.

Matthijs van Guilder they said in a controlled environment. Has no one listened to what they said in the video? My older neutered male mini Australian shepherd is teaching the female puppy I brought home social skills and its place. He does growl, bark and rarely will snap at the puppy warning her to back off. If my puppy is trained I can tell my puppy no, or whatever commands I choose to use. Dogs are pack animals. My dog is the leader. ( my older son lives with me and we also have his older dog here). He will warn the puppy but wont hurt her. Then he moves away. But when my older dog and puppy are together Im always there to control the situation. I trained my dog in one week when he was 8 weeks old the 7 basic commands. He is extremely smart, very gentle and a love. We have had eye female puppy for 2 weeks. She has no social skills of course. You are not understanding what they are saying. I've had probably 15-20 dogs throughout my life I brought everyone of them home as a puppy and trained them. My guy I have right now is the first small dog I've ever had. I've had st Bernard's, great pyrenees and Newfoundland's. They loved the puppies right from the start. there is a difference between owning an animal who dominated and owning an animal to coexist with it. if you see in this video is about 42 seconds the dog looks up and is immediately ordered to look down. it just goes to show that these people force and intimidate their dogs to do anything and everything that they command. every single living being on this planet has one common goal and that is survival. I have been raising dogs for over 20 years. they are free to run about the property in the home but yet they still respect the home and other animals / humans in it. forcing an animal to lay on the ground such as in this video clearly represents abuse of a spiritual being. don't abuse your power as a human being coexist with other animals and simply show them the proper way to live instead of using your power as a superior being to force them to do what you want them to do

We separated their toys and food and water bowls! Can you give us any more suggestions! We appreciate it!

Ok… The irony here…… I just came back after making a comment 2 years ago. My apology and I will be using your training method as far as Introducing my psycho Pomeranian puppy to my 5 year old Aussie I do have to disagree with outdoor playtime….I live in Las Vegas…..and right now in august ….it’s 108 degrees outside, so that’s not going to happen, lol

My family and I have a 6 year old pug and we recently got a 7 week old pug puppy, they don't seem to get along as the older dog snaps at her or growls as she is and always will be the princess. The pup seems to always want to play and my older dog has tried to play but is WAY to rough. We've been trying to keep them separate, while also trying to let them get to know each other. Any suggestions?

Keep a puppy on a leash or crated in the house for MONTHS????????
@rebeccacoomes25019 жыл бұрын
Yes. A freak accident. Not justification for making a dog live like that.

Our dogs sleep and eat in crates ALWAYS... so yes, for months. He didn't say to KEEP them in the crate. For one, it's a great tool for potty training. And when, as in the subject of a video, introducing a new dog to your family of animals, its a safety issue. We just spent 2600 on a puppy. Yes, I'll be crating it and keeping it on lease in the house until it's completely safe for it to be otherwise. For it's safety and my money's worth. We have 3 GSD's... a 2 year old, a 1 year old and a 7 month old. All different personalities, all sleep and eat in crates and have times in the day where they are crated for simple quiet time and/or time for the puppy to have a bit more freedom while learning the house and pack rules.

How should i do when the puppy is far larger than my old dog? My old dog is a 12yr old cairn terrior an the dog im tryin to adopt from a friend is a mastiff mix so even at 7-8months its already far larger than my old guy

SaskatchewanBadAss , I am no expert but I observed the neighbors after they aquired a large puppy and put it out in the fenced in area of their yard. For two years the puppy jumped on the older dog, despite warning growls and nipping from the older dog. The puppy wanted to play , it seemed non stop. There appeared to be no place the older dog could go for a little peace. I felt so bad for him. Two years later, the puppy, now grown still follows the older dog but no longer jumps in the older dog's face, etc.. I felt so bad for both of the dogs, I still do. It seemed so neglectful of the humans that never went out and played with the puppy or provide a way for the older to get some alone time from the puppy.
