As a vet tech and an ex rescuer, that's exactly how I separated dogs. Unfortunately you have to keep an eye on the dogs from the fight in the future if they live in the same home because dogs do carry grudges. One of my biggest pet peeves is not leashing your dog walking in the clinic. Yes, your dog may be well behaved but you don't know what's already in the clinic.

I have a pitbull who thinks she needs to challenge every dog she meets, even well-behaved dogs seem to be set off by her behavior. People who don't leash their dogs in public cause me an absurd amount of unnecessary stress. The number of times I've had to give my dog a milk bath because some idiot thought he could just let his dog out onto the porch to use the bathroom while I happened to be walking in the area is truly annoying.

It works. I learned it dog training school. Yes, I am a small woman. It was 2 female adult GSDs whom I loved dearly. It looked like I was going to have to kill one to save the other. Then, I remembered. I picked up the attacker by back legs, spun her around. I had already opened front door to let the victim out. In my training, I did it one other time with a gentle pittie being attacked by 6 others. I am lucky, I know. At the time, I thought I was a dog whisperer. After a couple more incidents training shelter rescues, my spine is herniated. I cannot physically handle big dogs anymore. Possible back surgery awaits. It is most certainly preferable with 2 or more handlers and a leash. The grab em by legs spin and separate does the job. Wish me luck with the surgery🐶🐕🐩🐺

I've tried that numerous times, and it has NEVER worked for me once. Last time I tried it, as I lifted the aggressor, it brought the dog being bitten with them. So now I have two dogs suspended in air, with one of them having its face bitten while hanging in air.

Thank you for this video. My daughter and I have seven rescue dogs, and I've had to break up four dog fights in the last six months - I was bitten pretty good the first time, but after that was much more careful about getting in between them. A few days ago I was babysitting my daughter's dog Bax (an 8 month 65 lb pit mix) and he got into it with one of my foster dogs (Stumpy, who is half his size.) They had always been best of friends, but I think the playing got too rough and Bax got angry. He had Stumpy's head partly in his mouth and was shaking his head back and forth; I was afraid he was going to break his neck so I grabbed Bax by the collar with one hand and under the waist with my other arm and picked him up in the air. However, when he let go of Stumpy, Stumpy decided to get some revenge and jumped up, latching onto Bax's leg and hanging there. Both combined were so heavy I thought I was going to have to put Bax down and just let them fight it out, but then an old pit bull we'd rescued (who can normally barely walk due to arthritis) came barreling up and knocked Stumps away from us. He grabbed Stumpy by the scruff and started to drag him away, and two of my other dogs pitched in, herding Stumpy with nips and growls. When they'd gotten him far enough, Clem, our old pit, stood over Stumpy and actually laid down on him, still holding him by the scruff. He wasn't attacking, but just gave a warning growl when Stumpy would try to wiggle free. This gave me time to get Bax in the house. If those other dogs hadn't helped, things might have gone very badly. Now that I've seen your video, I'm going to get a couple of your leashes in case we get into this situation again. Obviously prevention is the key; we are moving to the country and we're going to build an actual kennel which should help a lot, but there is always the chance of another fight. I have a question - what do you do when one dog has a part of the other dog in his jaws and won't let go? Pulling them apart by force seems like it could cause greater injury. Is there a reliable way to make them let go?

Warning: Trying to break up a dog fight is extremely dangerous and can cause life threatening injuries to humans. If you choose to take that risk, the most effective and safest way to break up a dog fight is to keep one or more long electric cattle prod shockers handy. The powerful real cattle prods work the best to break up a fight when dogs are in fight drive. And the extra length on a real cattle prod shocker helps keep you at a safe distance from the fighting dogs. It’s worth the investment. Even if you have to take the time to run to your car or inside your house to get the cattle prod, it’s safer and will get the dogs to stop and get out of fight mode better than any other method. If you pull on dogs fighting, they bite down harder so they don’t lose their grip on the other dogs. That is how protection dogs are trained to bite stronger and not let go...by pulling on their tails or pulling back on a leash attached to their collar or harness when the dog is biting on a bite sleeve or decoy. By the time you try other methods to break up a dog fight that don’t work (and are extremely dangerous to the human), fighting dogs will have either inflicted lethal injuries on one another (death may come later as dog bleeds out) or the injuries inflicted are extremely serious to critical. Taking the time to get the cattle prod shocker instead of trying other methods will actually end dog fights sooner. One shock to the dog who is winning the fight is often all it takes. I don’t agree with this man’s approach because of the danger to the human and the likelihood that it won’t work. A real dog fight is so frightening it would be hard for most people to intervene safely and effectively. Pulling straight up on a leash attached to a collar to choke the dog long enough to make the dog stop can work, but with great risk to the human and dogs fighting may not have leashes on. Plus, not everyone has the strength and height it takes to pull a big adrenaline’s dog straight up for a considerable amount of time. An aroused dog (or dogs) can redirect their aggression and inflict lethal injuries to a human. Warning: Trying to break up a dog fight is extremely dangerous and can cause life threatening injuries to humans.

Best way to make them let go is to use a slip lead and choke the one gripping the other. I would not recommend doing this unless the other dog isn’t fighting back. But once they lose consciousness they will release

I don't always agree with everything you guys do, but as an owner of a "red zone" rescue mutt, a certified trainer, who has worked training rescue, to Working Dogs, I've just shared this to my local dog park...which I don't take my dog to. In part, because I see owners who don't pay attention. I used to bring an "instigator" dog there, for a client, and people said, Well, we don't see him having issues. RIGHT! Because I stuck by his side, anticipated problems, and "split" them, when I saw one starting. I have one of these leads, and super love it. Cheers.

I am not a trainer, but a simple dog owner. I hate the fact that most people don't understand dog's body language, they don't understand how to introduce two dogs, and when and how to anticipate a dog fight. Mostly, they can't tell the difference between play bites and actual, aggressive bites. My 3-month old puppy was frightened by a czech wolfdog yesterday. First thing first, if you know that your dog is extremely strong and reactive, get her tired, play with her, and please do not just simply let her run toward other dogs. Be patient, move slowly. The thing is, my puppy used to play with everyone, and he also played with a more balanced, bigger, well-behaved czech wolfdog. But yesterday, he was crying and shaking, and the other owner had the nerves to tell me "oh that's normal, he wants to play but he is just a bit shy". Then, if that's normal, then why does he starts shaking as soon as he sees a German shepherd or any other wolf-like dog? Tomorrow, I will meet a dog trainer, I hope he will gain confidence and play with german shepherds and wolfdogs again 😭

My family just moved to a new house in a more or less rural area. Me and my sister took our English lab for a walk so he can do his business. My sister was the one holding the leash while I lazily walked behind her. We noticed a stray dog watching our's and since he was far away and our lab was never aggressive towards other dogs, we didn't even worry about about it. For perspective, our lab is about 88 lbs or even a little more while the stray mutt was about half that weight if not less. And English labs, unlike American ones, look more intimidating and have more bulk;their heads and chests are huge and broad (sometimes people think our's is an amstaff or a something like that and him being black, doesn't help the situation ). It all happened in 2 seconds or so, the mutt quickly shortened the distance between him and our dog and bit him and held him by the scruff. Our dog began to emit weird sounds and noises, maybe from the pain or maybe from aggression. The fucker continued to hold our dog like that even when me and my sister began to kick him as hard as we could everywhere. I even tried to aim for his balls but since both dogs were moving all the time, I never succeeded in doing so. When I realised that kicking is not helping, I pushed my fingers in the mutt's snout and pried his mouth open, releasing my dog. The thing worked only for a second as he jumped and bit my dog again. My lab couldn't do anything since the mutt help him form behind by his scruff, preventing my poor baby from turning and defending himself. After another round of kicking, and my futile attempt at finding a big rock/stick, a neighbour of our's heard the commotion, and quickly raced to the spot. He somehow managed to tear off the mutt and throw him on the ground, but it didn't stop him since he got up quickly and ran towards my lab. My lab was also barking and pulling towards the aggressor but my neighbour was faster as he again threw the other dog away and held him in place while me and my sister pulled our lab back towards out house. Thankfully, the not so thin layer of my lab's fat and the double layered coat saved his ass. There was not a drop of blood or scratch on him. My hands were shaking hours after that and I'm 22,while my sister is 21. At the moment, I didn't even think about the possibility of that dog turning around and biting us, since all that I wanted to do is to save my innocent dog. I say innocent because until now, he never met an aggressive dog, and he never have been bit by one, he was always friendly towards other canines, even the ones he saw for the first time in his life. I'm afraid that this experience will somehow affect his friendliness towards other dogs. Thanks a lot for the video, now I know what to do in these situations.

Good video. I have livestock guard dogs and have had to break up a few serious fights. A couple of things I do differently, in part because my dogs are large (100 to 145 lbs) and I am not quite as strong and my hands are arthritic, is I grab the tail instead of the legs. I find it is easier to spin them by the tail and they are less able to turn towards me. But my preferred method is to put a leash around the waist of one dog, and like you, drag the brawling mess to the nearest solid object... tree, atv, post etc. Tie that dog to the object, then do the same (put a leash around the waist) to the other dog and put tension on the leash, waiting for that moment where they try to re grip then PULL them apart. I have learned to always carry 2 leashes with me. An alternative method if caught with out any leashes, is to use a gate. Pull the brawling mess to a nearby gate and get one dog inside the gate then shut the gate (with steady pressure) on their heads. When they go to get a new grip pull the dog through and shut the gate separating the two. A door might work with smaller dogs. Before I touch the collar I always pat them on the dog's hindquarters to make sure they know it's me. If they acknowledge me then it is safe to touch the collar. I agree, you cannot train them out of the desire to fight

I have seen this done once. There was a clear aggressor and victim in that case. My brother-in-law just stepped in and grabbed the aggressor by the back legs and pulled it away. The fight stopped instantly and did not resume. It was the most amazing thing that I have ever seen in my life.

Awesome. Thank you so much. It is years late for me to save my relationship with a gorgeous Rottweiler that I initially rescued from a terrible situation and spent a year teaching her to feel more safe and less fearful. One day some other dog owner allowed their wild and under exercised golden lab or some such off leash and he attacked my dog... I did successfully break up the fight without getting hurt but I was lucky and I knew it. Months later my dog attacked that dog back and again I got damn lucky but I was afraid. After having lost control of such a big and sometimes still fearful dog that came from an abusive puppyhood there was only one thing I could do... I whisked her away to a Rottweiler rescue a few hundred miles away where they found an appropriate new forever home for her with a big man who worked in the bush and had no other animals and was very familiar with the breed. There were many hard but valuable lessons for me in the whole experience but it is only now from this video that I have gotten the first notion of a safer way to break up a dog fight. For this I thank you with my whole heart.

I was taught to grab where hind legs meet hips. This lessens chances of dog being able to reach my arms if he redirects, and also lessens chances of injury to hind legs. AND, it takes 2 experienced handlers to separate two dogs.

Also, the time wasted trying to grab exactly their in a fast brawl means more time for them to cause very dangerous injury to each other. You need to work fast, grab wherever on the hind legs (if you are going to use that method, honestly I am more familiar with humans so I am watching this to become familiar with dogs) you can. Because a lot of injury can occur very fast and if you are fiddling around with trying to grab just the right spot (depending of course on how much movement is involved) the injury they could cause each other will dwarf any injury prevnting by grabbing there.

Exactly. Grabbing should be near simultaneous, and each handler must be ready to release and re-grab since the grabbed dog first reaction will be to bend and bite.

Thank you so much for the video. Today my dog and I were attacked. My dog is extremely obedient and he can obey commands in the middle of the fight. I was able to grab the aggressor and gave command for my dog to stand down. He stopped the defense, but stayed a yard away guarding the dog. Thanks to your advise I didn’t have to put my dog’s life in danger by shooting the aggressor.

With 77 rescues I also keep a water hose handy. Funny enough if I suspect one looks like he wants to start an argument I sometimes just yell “I’m getting the stick”. Which is really funny since I had never used a stick on them before! Also I have a very loud voice from years of hauling cabs in NYC!

I really can't thank you enough for posting this video! The advice about using the police line to strap one of the dogs to a tree is gold. I think I'll be needing it somewhere in the future =) Not sure if it's applicable in all fights though. Thinking back on all fights I have seen there are also some which involve the dogs constantly circling each other. I can't see myself being able to leash one without the other getting tangled in it too, in which case I think it might be even harder to get them apart? I own a pack of big guard dogs with pretty feisty characters, so I have some experience with fights. And I have to say, I am so happy you are so upfront about the risks of breaking up fights! I love the graphic photos on your site, they really help drive the point home. It never ceases to amaze me how lightly people can think about dogs and their ability to bite. It really makes me sad =( In the end they are animals, not human. And in a frenzied state they won't recognise you. If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it!

I mostly agree with you, but statistically speaking, humans hurt and kill much more people than dogs. So the reasoning that dogs are more dangerous, because they are not human is incorrect. Humans can and do lose their minds pretty easily and frequently.

Easy method I came up with when I was breeding APBT's was to take a running water hose and stick it into the mouth of whichever one had the hold. You restrain the other one first of coarse, but works every time. Quickly and without risking damage to their teeth with the breaker bar.

I have rescued fighting dogs and they do learn to behave and not to start a fight. I have an Am staff which was a fighting dog and now helps me at a local shelter. He is my own dog and i can say that he gets along well with other dogs.

I've broken up two dog fights by being louder than the dogs fighting. Dogs have senstive hearing and by yelling REAL LOUD you 'may' be able to achieve breaking up the fight long enough for the owners to get their dogs away and focused on something else.

Great point, at times you simply have to get in and get on with it. I have found that a strong grab to the scruff of the neck just below the skull is a technique that I have used and had success with. Lifting the dogs two front feet removes the power from the shake and with the grip tight and in the right place the risk of receiving a bite is minimal. Once a break in the dogs grip occurs turn dogs away from each other if possible and then wait for assistance or get the dogs separated to different rooms. Granted that this is not perfect for all fights and definitely not if you have two large powerful animals at it. I have used this with a fight between my own dogs a large staffy and Jack Russell x border and worked effectively but I know my animals and knew I could handle them this way, it may not work on the streets with dogs that didn't have me as their pack leader.

Oh, I had to choke out a Pit bull (I have no problem with that breed, just this dog) to save my Corgi's life. It had it by her neck, but just through the top layer of skin, not all the way through, luckily. It was the most horrid few minutes, that seemed to last for hours. Six years later, my Corgi is still very traumatized. I know I was lucky to end up with minor injuries. Thanks for the video.

My mom had to save our shih tzu from a pit too :( He had my dog by the neck and my mom just started hitting the pit and managed to free my dog. Luckily she didn't get hurt and my dog was ok after a few stitches.

I DO have a problem with pits and people owning them. They should be phased out. They are nasty and unpredictable and responsible for killing around 95% of all pets and livestock! They are responsible for the worst injuries on attacks on humans and animals. They are the #1 dog killer of people by a HUGE margin. My friend, a retired game warden, had his leashed Lab attacked in a park by an unleashed pit bull owned by a young fellow. The Lab was injured but not too badly before he could get them apart/to stop. But he would never tell me what he did! I think his Lab would still obey commands and he focused on the pit bull. I have broken up several dog fights during my life and each time what worked was throwing water on their heads and faces. It works every time. It essentially shocks the dogs and it causes them to stop fighting.

Sadly this doesn't work in a serious fight. It might break up a minor scuffle (which can still look and sound ferocious), but when you have two dogs determined to kill each other, they don't even notice a hose turned on full blast and aimed up their nostrils (as a behavioural trainer, I've seen ppl try just that many times.) Physical separation is the only way, and this video demonstrates the safest way to do it, and you don't need a police lead, any lead/rope will do, as long as you can anchor it in some way.

Smacking GPS, I have broken up severe fights in which one dog was even losing parts of their jaw by only picking up the dogs water bowl and hurling the water at them. It has never failed for me. This is always the way to do it. Never get near two dogs who are fighting. Never touch fighting dogs as they may react by biting you. I have had 67 pets in my life time , many of them dogs and throwing water on them works every time.

Okay, 2 pits, tangled together by leashes and a zip line... water doesn't help. I actually shot my handgun into the ground! Seven rounds, neither even flinched. The only thing that stopped them? Two of us, choking the dogs out with their own leashes attached to their collars and even so, it still took a full two minutes of superhuman strength, a strong will, and every muscle in my upper body. This just happened a couple hours ago, and the entire fight lasted over an hour. Both are bloody messes, and me? I am having a drink! Still shaking.

My dog does not come within reach of another dog. I am well known for kicking the shit out of a dog that is off leash and charging me while I keep my dog behind me. If that doesn't stop it I will shoot the other dog. All you people who think your dog needs dog friends are out of your mind. Wonderful video, very educational! I wish I had known all of this when I was younger. I grew up with a dog who was very male dog and large dog aggressive. I was the only one willing to brake up a fight if/when it occurred. First one was when I was just 12! Everyone else said to let them fight it out however when our dog had the younger and slightly smaller dog pinned to the ground I just knew it wouldn't end very well and just wrapped my arms around our dogs chest and pulled him back. Luckily he didn't swing around and bite me. However since we were dog sitting the dog he had just attacked we had 4 days of stress and on the next to last day they got into it again (they had a few minor ones before this one) and our dog did end up biting my hand as well as breaking skin on the other dog, nothing serious but oh my gosh did it hurt! I have just a tiny scar now but it is a very clear reminder that sometimes they just need to work things out. I really underestimated the power and danger of two 80 lb dogs going at it.

Yeah it doesn't work. We tried this concept when two of our Pits went at each other. The aggressor just flipped around and bit my wife. Guess this only works with dogs that aren't gymnasts. We have found that blasting them with air out of a can of air at the face, not too close, works fine and every time.

It works if you do it correctly - if your not strong enough to circle with the dog you should not try or you will get bit. So don't blame the system if your not strong enough to do it.

My neighbor has a small dog and was walking in the park A lady had a sheba inu attacked her small dog the owner told him to step on the sheba inu paw hard so would stop fighting it stopped after a couple of times my neighbor told me her dog had 3 bite wounds from the sheba inu I never heard of stepping on aggressive dog paw before to stop fighting it did help my neighbors dog escape severe injury

I have 4 dogs, I've had them for over 5 years. Just recently my dogs can't stand to look at each other. I've had 6 dog fights and have had to pay over $7000 in medical bills. I've learned to keep it from happening. They are all now in separate kennels all throughout each corner of my back yard. I have broken up a few dog fights without leashes. Only once did I get bit and that was while I held a bull mastiff's jaws to keep it from killing the much smaller dog. The bite came from the smaller dog trying to get the bigger one off and my hand was in the way. This video is helpful, but not for every situation.

I have a 6yr old Female GSD. She is a rescue that came to me a year ago. Alina is dog aggressive and I had hoped that would change once she was given freedom to roam the acre yard & had plenty of attention & exercise. A friend came over unexpectedly one day with his 9 mth old Golden Retriever . They just walked right into my yard & Alina, instead of attacking Shiloh, started playing with him. Then about 2 mths ago, I had to drive out west to pick up my son & his Jack Russel mix named Bates, I was scared that Alina would attack Bates, especially since we would be driving 3000 miles in a compact car with 2 adults & 2 dogs. The only aggression Alina showed was if they were given bones or chew treats ( in hotel rooms). We all live together now (2mths) and the GS & Jack Russel appear to be best buddies. However, Alina has become more aggressive at times, toward other dogs when I walk them. Your video woke me up to the reality that an aggressive dog that fights, won't change. Thank you I was holding hope that soon I would attempt to let her off leash if she was calmer around other dogs. my desire for her to play with others is foolish, she is who she is. Again, thank you for the wakeup .

Just broke up a dog fight an hour ago that was crazy to witness, i know it showed me how important it is to have a dog on a leash, but in this case a american bully was being walked on a leash and my neighbors dog fred came up and wanted to play but the bully took it as a threat and grabbed the dog by the head ,i just reacted i love dogs and wasnt about to witness this dog die in front of me but knew this dog its my neighbors ,i actually bought the son of the dog 3 weeks prior,i just reacted ran ouuut front door grabbed the dog by the head and i punched the dog 3 times grabbed him by the top of mouth and tried ripping him off after few more hits and a loud no i yelled it while looking dead into his eyes he finally let go but was very intense,the shitzu dog fred was screaming for dear life people were just standing there i had to do somethin both dogs seem ok fred needs a checkup hes in little shock but actually responding really well didnt bleed much at all but i need a safer way if this happens in future ,thanks for the tips.

It's late for this, but I'm case someone else reads this - be very attentive to puncture wounds that don't bleed, or bleed only a little. Bleeding helps flush wounds of bacteria and debris. If that doesn't happen the risk of infection goes up.

Thank you for the tips! I didn’t know about grabbing them by hind legs and spinning. The info about smaller people maybe just letting the bigger dogs fight it out on their own for safety purposes is also helpful. Our local trainer hooked us up with an electronic collar for our pup. That’s made a world of difference in encouraging him to behave around our other dogs. He hasn’t started a dog fight since he was trained on it. Might be an option for multi-dog households with a younger dominant dog and older less dominate dogs.

I have never gotten a fight broken up with the back leg technique. I find the door method is much more effective especially by yourself. I pull the dogs into the doorway ,and start shutting the door at the bite area, (Don't slam the door into their heads) and make sure you are pushing the door shut.

I just BONK! the dog on the head and say "HEY! NO!" Thats been what ive done with most every fight ive ever had. Ive never had that many issues. I work around lots of dogs now. If a fight breaks out USUALLY its just one or two dogs. even if it looks like a bunch. Choosing the correct dog to bonk is an acquired skill I guess. I had a VERY dog-aggressive pitt mix that i rescued. That DID eventually cure her of her aggression lmao. I never ever hit her, so eventually she got the message. She was tough as nails though, you had to punch the hell out of that dog for her to snap back to reality. But when you did, She'd reset right back to her regular sweet self. It was like flipping a switch. Its didn't even seem to hurt or scare her. It just got her attention back. That dog was a TANK. After a few scuffles, she got over it. Even got to where another dog could growl and nip at her and she wouldn't get mad. She just never had proper socializing with other dogs. She was SO eager to please, so once she learned that I didn't want her to attack ANY dogs EVER. She quit. Such a good girl. I miss her. My little porkchop.

Thanks for your video, always appreciated. What about if the breed is a 'gripper' though? If you tried the way you've demonstrated 1 or both dogs are going to get teared/ripped. My Stafford got attacked by some kind of pit/bull and its 1 of the scariest experiences of my life. The owner thought he could take hold of his dogs collar and pull him off, he nearly ripped my dogs ear off. Beating it was making it more fight/flight, he kicked it in its scrotum, the dog turned and bit him then back onto my dog. Now my dog is bad with other male dogs due to fear. I've found the best way to control or get him to release is by using a choker collar or get him by the scruff of the neck, which I have 3 broken fingers from doing!!! People should be very aware and know how to handle their dog if it does get into a fight, otherwise they shouldn't have the pleasure of owning a dog. Please don't think I'm questioning what you said, I'm just sharing my story. Its made me a lot more aware when out with my dog and its so sad to see him act the way he does with males due to fear. Do your research before buying a dog, the breed, that's my advice. I would hate anyone to go through what me and my boy did that day.

Assuming your question is serious, it's most likely the dog would have a doggy wheelchair (wheels strapped to the pelvis) and you'd just grab the wheels as if they were back legs. At the daycare I work at, we have one dog who's missing a front leg, and another who's missing a back one.

Good video except "once two dogs fight they will always fight " isn't always true. Some fights are triggered, often by human behavior. Eliminate the trigger and the dogs won't fight. Most dog fights happen in the presence of humans.

That's not always true. The dogs ( actually all animals) have their own rules and often they following them, especially if they are not neutered. My 116 pounds GSD is fighting with the other males for domination....and I never triggered him. At home he is more affectionate and caressing than my cat.

In fact, no dog should go to a dog park that hasn't been properly socialized. If I had helped you train your dog, it would have cost less than a thousand dollars, and your dog's behavior would have been corrected or I would have identified restrictions that he had to live with. Unfortunately, many trainers do not use the best methods and some are just in it for the money. Again, my statement does not apply to all cases of aggression, so there is nothing erroneous about it. You are correct though that dogs will follow their instincts unless they are trained to overcome them, and in some cases the instinct is too strong to overcome.

I have two female Staffy Bull Terriers. When the older one (Dazy) locks her jaws on the other, she does not let go. If I pull them apart, Mandys (The younger one) ear is coming with us. Water works well too but it needs to be a good amount to soak their faces. If you’re outside and there’s a hose handy, just keep the jet mode on their faces and if they try to go back keep squirting until they stop going for each other.

We own a boxer and an Egnlish Mastiff. The boxer is 9 years old and the mastiff is 19 months. He wants to play continually. She has none of it. On occasion she gets too grumpy and starts a fight. We keep them separated. We have tried to pull her off by lifting her back legs. It doesn't work. She holds on. The mastiff is a gentle giant. He has only fought back once. We can't lift his back legs up. He weighs 190 lbs.

Years back I asked an Amstaff breeder what they recommended for breaking up dog fights. Answer: cattle prod. Guaranteed to work. I owned some non-Amstaff show terriers at the time and over the years had experienced a couple of four/five dog brawls that took an hour to break up because of the terrier tendency to latch on and stay latched on. I wanted a quick, safe way to break up a brawl as soon as it started and I didn't want anyone bit in the process. Went to Farm & Fleet and bought a cattle prod. Six months later some fool left a gate open and two dogs got together and started fighting. Grabbed the prod and jabbed one on the @$$, then jabbed the other on the neck. Fight over. The thunderbolts from heaven told them instantly that the dog gods disapproved of their behavior. After a few more accidental battles between pack members they all quickly caught on the thunderbolts came from that weird contraption sitting in the umbrella stand in the dining room. They also figured out the words "KNOCK IT OFF!" from me preceded the thunderbolts. The days of dog fights were over in the household. If one started, a verbal order to knock it off had everyone - including non-combatants - running for a neutral corner. So, if you have tiny women with big bad dogs that want to fight - cattle prod. Guaranteed to work.

Good advice. I broke up a fight just like that. The problem was that one dog had his jaws clamped on the other dogs head. So I was pulling one dogs back legs while his head was in the others mouth. Crazy. No blood. Miracle. Also the other owner who was always a big talker, panicked and I had to scream at him to grab the other dogs legs. Funny how the big tough talkers are usually all talk. Screaming seemed to be good to distract the dogs. They hate screaming. I now go to dog parks with my tennis racket. It’s a good tool to defend against a stupid dog and people aren’t intimidated by tennis rackets. They think I just came back from playing.

At this point you grab what you can and they will probably be moving around fast enough and causing so much damage that frankly the details don't matter. An injured leg is nothing compared to losing them entirely because you tried to grab them in only just the right spot. My experience has more to do with humans than dogs, so I don't necessarily know about whether this technique is good or not, but frankly in any fight, human or animal, things happen fast and you do what you can. Just focus on getting the leg at all, and if further up is where your hand lands then it sounds like that's great but frankly just for the time element alone that shouldn't be a focus. Do what you can, and the sooner you do it the less injury there will be.

This actually works IF you do it right and STAY calm. I live alone. I am a 65 yo woman who has had large working dogs her whole life BUT I weigh 105 pounds. I am physically pretty strong. I have 117 pound dog who fights anything. He was a dumped dog. I avoid fights at all costs. I plan ahead meticulously. When I feed, I feed separately, even with the little dogs I have. Easier to AVOID a fight, than break one up BUT if you have to, I have used this method BOTH alone and with help. It works

My dogs used to fight, and stopped them by grabbing them both by the scruff while simultaneously stepping on whatever they were fighting over. I then forced them to break eye contact by holding them on either side until they were calm. I then released them and let them approach the item again when they were calm. In doing so, I established that I owned the object they were fighting over, and that I would only share it with them when they were calm, be it food, a toy, or space. They very quickly learned that fighting wasn't acceptable behavior, so, they started looking to me for directions on proper behavior, and I rewarded the behaviors I wanted by giving them what they wanted from me. 10 years later, they get along just fine- no fighting at all.

We have a neighbors dog who attacks un provoked and this last week it’s happened twice... would a taser work?

My 9 year old Am Bull was provoked into a fight for the first time in his life. We separated by grabbing him by the scruff and once he was away he quieted down. He's well trained to an intermediate ( AM CDX) obedience level, was thoroughly socialized and always has been kindly with other animals large and small and has a stable disposition. I had him off lead for a few minutes to allow him to do his business ( He's trained not to do his deed while on lead) The other dog approached and provoked him by mounting him. He warned, and then reacted when the warning was not heeded. He stopped once separated and never lashed at the guy when he grabbed him. This video was helpful and I can see where that would be a better technique than getting the scruff or a high collar hold. I've had several dogs and trained and competed to advanced levels in obedience and field retrievers. This was my first fight. I guess it can happen to anyone.

I still prefer to use pepper spray, three out of three times the dogs have lost all interest in continuing the fight.

paul ellis legault right, better to have multiple strategies available to use if and only if prevention fails. if one knows their dogs and is mindful, can usually spot signals and prevent ... or stop it very quickly.
