I still can’t believe Daytona USA 2 never got a port on consoles. It seemed like it would have been perfect for a Xbox Live Arcade/PSN release. I suppose it’s never too late to bring to modern consoles, but, I won’t hold my breath on that.
@trzy Жыл бұрын
When I released Supermodel in 2011, someone at Sega of Europe got in touch with me to explore doing some Model 3 ports on XBox 360. They sent an NDA and then ghosted me. It was super weird. I think the big problem with these games now is the licensing expense.
@MrThunderwing Жыл бұрын
@@trzy Hey Bart! I never knew that you'd been contacted by Sega about this, that's really interesting. How bizarre that they just ghosted you afterwards. So bizarre that Sega decided to just totally ignore Daytona USA 2 the whole time they had the license for the first game - it only just got de-listed from XBLA and PSN fairly recently (Can't recall if it was late last year or early this year).

You forgot to mention Daytona USA 2 having two versions. One is Battle On The Edge which is the the Japanese version in this video. The other is Power Edition, International Version that changes the Beginner track to Nascar speedway and they also added an extra 4th track. Nevertheless, a big shame Sega never even want to port this masterpiece to home console

Randomly, I ponder if the Gradius ship Lord British is a homage to the Ultima creator. The throw into screen animation for the jumping vampires is rather brutal, eyes just pop out, eech. I like the Wampa room, that's where you store your Wampas. That was a cut scene from ESB, where the droids remove a warning label (Danger, Wampa storage, I assume), and some unsuspecting Snowtroopers barge in, I seem to recall.
@KasumiKenshirou Жыл бұрын
That's correct. There was a subplot about the Rebels having do deal with Wampas invading their base, and they manage to trap some in a room. When the Empire invades the base, C-3PO rips off a warning label on the door of that room telling people not to enter it. Then some Stormtroopers go into that room and the Wampas kill them. The part with C-3PO ripping the sign off the door is actually in one of the movie trailers.

I recently watched an Ultima documentary for some reason(it helped me fall asleep) and they mentioned this as a fact. The Ultima guy inspired the ship.

Quality episode! Good selection of games and the pronunciation of Hachoo! was on point. Ending skit looks like one of those silly Japanese commercials western actors did in the 80's and 90's, that surely wouldn't come back to haunt them as the world internationalized with some information superhighway, or somethin'.

Just wanted to let you guys know some of these games have had Dreamcast conversions made by the community. They work on emulators and real hardware alike. I can't link them here but it's a search away, and I definitely think they should be covered in a future episode.

I highly recommend Emergency Call Ambulance for the Sega Model 3. It is only 4 stages long but it will take you awhile to get good enough to make it through all 4 stages. If you end up featuring it and play it for the episode I recommend picking the manual transmission. The last stage seems almost impossible to do with an automatic. I played it with an Xbox controller and set the left and right shoulder buttons to shift down and shift up. Pro tip! You can gain extra speed by switching back and forth between lower and higher gear. I'm interested in hearing your opinion on it since it is my top Model 3 game.

Waverunner is well known for the sit-down cabinet, for being a real Waverunner, and mimics the feel of it from the game. Edit: Also forgot Star Wars Trilogy! Dude I remember beating EVERYTHING! I *LOVED* that Star Wars Arcade game. I used to play it every time we went to the movies. The light saber parts were pretty fun with the joystick the arcade came with. I played Star Wars Trilogy Arcade a lot back in the day and loved it. The original arcade cabinet had a really long analog joysick that made the whole game feel quite satisfying. And it's difficult to explain well but it was easy to get used to the inverted vertical control for the light saber bonus stages because the joystick would put your wrists at a similar angle to the way you'd hold a light saber in real life. Playing the game with little thumbsticks on a joypad, or with a mouse, would make it feel very different. It might be OK with the biggest flight stick you can find.

I've been playing Gradius V a lot lately, and that made me think about a potential idea for an episode (or a series even): *what about games that are as difficult as they are fun?* Because for example, Gradius V would be a perfect example of that in my opinion. I mean, it's hard as balls at times but it's never frustrating, you are always wanting to try again, and that's a clear sign of a brilliantly designed and executed game I think. And when are we going to have a part 2 of "Games with awesome music"??? *That series has a heck ton of potential!!* Anyways, thank you so much for keeping the sack going strong Joe.

Joe pays a lot more attention to music and sound than most other creators / (retro) video game reviewers (there's even Sound Sack and all + his own musical endeavours and VGM covers).
