Your review is spot on. I enjoyed the slow build of the story, it kept me highly engaged. I can admit that while reading I didn’t feel the thriller until we began learning more about what was happening to Sydney’s neighbors, and honestly it freaked me the heck out & don’t want to say why without spoiling it for anyone reading this. This being my first Alyssa Cole novel to read, I am highly pleased.

Yeah I think the first thriller moment for me was her Uber ride. I was like GET OUT THAT CAR! Lolol 🤣! I like that the suspenseful elements felt like real situations. Definitely freaked me out 🤐

I just finished this book last night and absolutely loved it. I do hope that Alyssa Cole writes more thrillers because this is probably one of the best thrillers I have read!

Just finished it like 30 minutes ago and remembered you did a review so I came back to watch. The weakest part of the book was the ending for me... too much too unrealistic but everything else especially the history like you said wow! Taught me so much

Yes! The slow build was absolutely incredible. I couldn't put the book down. I also agree that it was so educational as well as easy to read. This was my first Alyssa Cole book and I'll definitely be reading more!

This was my first Alyssa Cole read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I agree with the critiques about the ending but it was wrapped up tightly enough for my taste lol. It would make a great movie imo.
@LEFTONREAD4 жыл бұрын
It really would! I think there also could be things the program creator could play with and flush out further.

I love, love, love thrillers, and this book was chef's kiss amazing, as a black woman, I could relate to Sidney. Alyssa touched on the crack epidemic vs the opioid epidemic, black people being used as test subjects. Things that truly happen or have happened was all there!! I feel like the harsh criticism was given by those who relate to Kim or Bodega Becky 🤷🏾♀️.

Couldn’t be more pumped to read this. I have it on audio as soon as I finish “leave the world behind” which I’m currently listening to. This sounds so so so good. I was obsessed w get out when it came out and Alyssa cole is an awesome writer and this book came just in time for spooky season! I am loving the hype that thrillers/horror written by non-white authors are getting this year, I might have to extend spooky season to November this year!!!

Not sure if you follow Bowties & Books but they made a great video about why people don’t seem to like “When No One Is Watching” and I thought it was a really interesting video! I really liked it though but I had the same feelings like you did with the ending. I can’t wait for her next books!

No I haven’t watched! Also yes I wanted to talk about the ending SO bad, but was like I can’t do spoilers 😩😩😩.

I like a slow build and I'm not crazy about thrillers anyway so those things wouldn't deter me . My main concerne from the sound of it is whether all the interwoven factual material reads like a text book and is cumbersome to get through if I just want to lose myself in the story .

Great video I loved this book . I’m very proud to see the diversity from this author because I really don’t care for romance. I did think it was slow a build up which isn’t bad . But sometimes the writing felt like a satire ....
@LEFTONREAD4 жыл бұрын
Oh wow you don’t like romance 🙈🙈🙈! Girl Alyssa Cole is what got me knee into romance again 🤣🤣🤣. Also hmmm satire 🤔? I guess I can see why. Semi script vs. book comparison, but many felt the same about get out, which this book has been compared to.

So before I give my review, you look so beautiful! But you always look gorgeous! The book was a good read; however, I do think that the build up was off--maybe not slow but off. I think the suspense could have had more...ummm...suspense. lol She did give good information about NYC that I didn't know, and the characters were well developed which really kept the story going but took away from the thriller aspects of the novel. Some parts were predictable, especially the ending. (It still had me totally engaged!) I like your point about Black creatives using genres for messaging. But here's my question: Do you think Black creatives are creating to appeal too much to White audiences or do you feel like it's universally appealing?
@Juiceharlot4 жыл бұрын
What do you mean appeal to the white audience? They didn't even enjoy this book and tried to say it wasn't a "thriller." There are plenty of Black people that don't have historical literacy because it isn't taught to us, and I think that everytime someone tries to say "oh well I been knew that, so this must be for white folks." It's overlooking the Black People that have yet to learn it.
@ttill42464 жыл бұрын
@@Juiceharlot I see your point. And I agree, there are Black people who can learn from these books. I learned a lot of historical facts from the novel and other fiction and non-fiction texts I have read. I'm speaking more about themes and messages, and I'm not targeting this novel in particular but literature and media in general. The theme and topic of a lot of content is the struggles of Black America. Most Black people are familiar with these themes in everyday life, so I question who the writers/creators are targeting. No doubt the content is good and necessary, but I would like to see messaging that addresses more nuanced topics in Black life.
@LEFTONREAD4 жыл бұрын
1. Aww thank you 😊 🤗🤗💛 2. Lololol I love how you said “more...ummm suspense” 🤣🤣🤣! Based on other reviews, I know you aren’t alone. I read maybe 3-5 thrillers a year (so not super heavy in the genre), but this was prob the most scared / on edge I’ve been while reading. It felt like real...like it could happen, like it does happen. The whole peaking in the windows, the Uber ride, the thinking you heard someone come in the house etc. I was def speed reading like “no no no get out”. So I I liked the pacing/ suspense. I’m wondering if the suspense/pacing was off with some people because the chapters didn’t end on cliff hangers, like with a lot of thrillers. As for your other question. I don’t think black creatives in horror/ thrillers are pandering to white audiences. Specifically in this book, I didn’t feel that way at all. I felt like it was written for me. Like idk I was joking with a friend that girl Sydney likes Henny and Talenti like me 😩🤣. Little things that aren’t big like that but aren’t explained let’s me know Alyssa was just writing. Also the JENN and Jen with the homemade dog treats and hummus. Stuff like that just made everything seem everyday convo / natural. Did you feel like she was writing this for white audiences specifically?
@ttill42464 жыл бұрын
@@LEFTONREAD I like your point about the cultural references throughout the story, so I do think it appeals to Black audiences in that sense. I don't think the actual writing is meant to pandering or appeal to White audiences but the themes might be targeted for White, non-Black audiences to help them understand the plight of Black Americans. It's necessary to do so, but I would like to see more literature/tv/ movies that tackle other issues in Black America.
