If you have been dealing with low back pain and wondering if the leg press is something you should be doing this video is for you. Leg press back pain is common but it's not just because of your form. Leg pressing with low back pain may just not be a good idea period especially when you have so many other options to pick from to build stronger legs.

I have 3 herniated discs in my lower back and leg press literally helped my back, using low weight high volume

I started leg press this 8th week post injury,no pain but my spine feel weird,itchy moving kind off,so i think i need tov slow things lil bit

I was actually happy with linear leg press machine but two weeks ago i switched to seated leg press and only with two workouts she killed my lower back (even i done moves correctly). Now im gonna go back to standard leg press with single leg. Thank you for your advice.

got a l4-l5 bulging disc. did not have pain for 6months. did leg press, 5sets x20 about my body weight, caused my back to hurt badly for about a week and still not getting better.

ODU Grad! Actually, the way I damaged my back and the posture I'm able to maintain the leg press weirdly decompressed the stressed area and makes it feel better. I don't think it's that way for the majority of people though.

I just hurt my back this week on leg press. I'm going to use the horizontal leg press machine versus the machine weight coming down on the back

The leg press was how I herniated my discs in the first place. However, what about doing single leg presses, thus little pressure on the lower back?

Did the herniated disk ever resolve? I think I just did the same thing with my back. Can’t move very well

@@seeno1 No, the pain is changing. Now I have little pain in my back, but my feet are often numb. Also my arms and hands go numb when sleeping. I forgot about this vid, yesterday did light leg press 🙄

@j after more than 18 months thankfully I am starting to feel better. I'm doing usual leg exercises like squats, lunges, presses etc but light weights and higher reps. My recovery could be due to the fact that I started increases the amount of daily stretching I was doing.

Leg press actually reduces my back pain. I had a discectomy 6 years ago.

What types of exercises would you recommend for a herniated disk? Specifically l5 &s1 and also a 50%reduction in l5 disk. New to the channel. I did see your inversion video and that was great since I didnt want a table!

There isn't any evidence to say 'rounding your back' puts you at added risk of injury? Surely if load management and progressive overload is adhered to, the leg press (if sensitive) is a reason to strengthen that movement?

Yeah I’m not speaking to the evidence of whether or not rounding the back is dangerous because it’s not. But tell someone who lives with chronic low back sensitivity and flexion being one of those triggers that they are okay to round....you’re not going to get anywhere with them. If I was working with someone and their ultimate goal was to get back to the leg press then sure progressive loading and training that exercises could work but we are talking about the average person not coached doing this exercise. That’s who I am speaking to.

Ok I toughteg presses were bad for lower back with buldging disk?? I been looking at videos and reading lots of articles about how bad they are for people with buldging disk so iam 😕 I know belt squats are good

Ha!! I've been going to a facility called the Spine Zone in S. Cal...I believe they have hurt me worse and have had very little knowledge. Yep...put me on the leg press. You should open your own spinal facilities and teach P.T's. Thank you.

I happen to have a talent on the leg press machine. I've been going to the gym since January this year (now September as of this comment). I started out with about 5 plates a side, I am now reaching 15 plates a side getting 8 reps not letting my knees pass 90°. The amount of weight concerns me a bit so I've been doing a ton of research on safety. I feel my form is good. I never experienced any pain, the weight doesn't feel as heavy as it looks. If anything my body feels great after. Is there any reason I shouldn't be pushing this much weight if I feel totally fine when doing it?

Stop doing super heavy leg press, it’s not impressing any one at the gym and you are gonna regret it really soon. 3/4 plates is plenty for a strongman to build legs

@redbullstatus that was 2 years ago. I got up to 24 plates 3 reps to 90° lol. I still go heavy on it but I switched to barbell Bulgarian split squats as my main leg exercise. To me nothing felt more sketchy than heavy regular back squats.

If you have a disc injury, leg press will only cause you more pain.

Let me give my anecdotal two cent: leg press machine is terrible for your back. Even with proper posture, it’s high risk. Do squat for legs.

I blew my disks doing machine leg presses long ago. Took me a long time to figure out what the effects from these machines actually were. It’d absolutely terrible and puts all the weight directly on the -L3 and 4.
