The Patient Story

Күн бұрын

Tony W. was diagnosed with a rare form of non Hodgkin's lymphoma called T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma in summer 2021. He had symptoms like leg swelling and fatigue while cycling.
He did 6 cycles of R-CHOP chemotherapy. He responded very well initially, with scans showing significant reduction of his lymphoma after just a few treatments. He shares how during chemo, he pushed himself to keep exercising and moving his body to help fight the side effects.
After diagnosis, Tony took on an alter ego and warrior mindset to battle the cancer. He also leaned heavily on his faith. Throughout his journey, Tony learned to celebrate the small wins and victories along the way and he advises others going through cancer to guard themselves emotionally and stay focused.

Ive had a husband die of cancer, I've had friends die from cancer and I've heard or read 100's of cancer stories but yours, my friend, stood out to me. With the most honesty I say to you that you should become a public speaker for cancer patients and...yes..their friends and family. You have many positive messages that need to be heard to help others. My husband died from colon cancer when he didnt have to. He would always make the same remark that he was going to be dead at age 50. I would always tell him not to say that. What I didnt know was he was having symptoms that he covered up or lied about. He told me he had bloody stools from his ulcer. I asked him when did you get an ulcer? He said, oh I've had it forever. I persisted on trying to get him to his primary doctor and he wouldnt go until it was too late. After his physical, his primary doctor said to me in private, it doesnt look good. From there we went straight to the hospital where he went thru a few tests. At the end of the day I asked that doctor, in private, what his prognosis was as we just found out he had colon cancer. Without a blink of an eye, the doctor said said his prognosis wasnt good. So I insisted the doctor to tell me how bad it really was. So the doctor then said he only has a few months to live maybe even weeks. I never told my husband that. Why? Because I wanted him to fight..After 2 years he had succumbed to his cancer but....he fought so hard but he also self sabatoged his body by smoking weed and using cocaine for pain relief and because he wanted to live it up before he died. This was a horrible time for me. I know your story would have helped him mentally. Even though he repeatedly said he was strong and that there was nothing to worry about, I could tell he was nervous about his diagnosis. And scared....I wish he had heard your story......... Kj

I'm going through this with my husband. It's like he's in complete denial about his diagnosis. Goes against doctors advice, when it comes to watching what to eat, drink. I'm at my wits end.

I love that you shared your story. Thank you so much for sharing. Love your attitude and your passion. We don't share the same CA but do share a Lymphoma journey. I did my 1st and only century ride in 2011. I was so proud for that personal milestone. Biking used to be my joy. My church on Sundays, my way to push my body and clear my head. Life got in the way - I ended up becoming my Dad's PC that year. He passed in 2016 @ 81. I really got to know him his last 5 years. Hard to watch someone you love decline in body and mind, but they are so worth the effort. I went to nursing school to get a local job and be more knowledgeable to help my Dad. It was rough because I was sick most of the year that I was in the accelerated program. I got away from biking because of school and Dad could not be left alone. Over the years, I tried to get back to where I was before but just could not. My Drs blamed stress, depression, menopause (they just did not believe me)... basically making me feel that I was wasting their time. It is hard to know when I first started to get sick. Think it was a slow decline over many years. Things got worse after COVID hit. In 2021, my health went from not so good to terrible. However, the good Lord was watching out for me. My PCP could not ignore the jaundice (with extreme GERD, N/V and unable to eat/drink). I was in the hospital for 11 days - lots of tests and Drs were out of their depth and could not / would not listen. They thought bile duct or Pancreatic CA, but could not confirm it. I went to see a surgeon at their suggestion when I refused a 3rd biopsy attempt. He ordered a PET scan and suggested a Whipple. A mini crisis sent me back to the ER and at that point, I decided to go ahead with the Whipple. That led to a BIG surprise - NHFL was what caused the 100% bile duct obstruction where it connected to the pancreas. An unexpected CA in an unusual location. It has been a long haul back. I get checked q 6 months without any apparent relapse or advancement - YEAH!!! I was offered RCHOP at first and then just Rituximab itself. Because of my severe GI issues - I declined both... That was 17 months ago... But as with you, it is always in the back of our minds. I also seem to have many B type related symptoms that don't warrant any attention - fatigue, itching and low Vit D. My onco says it has nothing to do with my NHFL. Not sure that I 100% believe her. I also seem to catch any bugs that get near me. I am so envious of your bond with your healthcare team - I can't seem to bond with any of them. Again, I want to thank you for sharing your story. It shows your grace, courage and patience. Your alter ego (warrior) is awesome too. I wish you the best. Hugs!
