Wow. What an intetesting interview. Really enjoyed it. I never knew about 7 med despite being a (base) medic in the mid 80's. These guys were realtime heros. Thank you for sharing Stefan.

Although I was in the SAP Special Task Force we did our medical courses at 7 Med. We used to administer Ketelaar at 2 mg per kg intravenous or 10mg per kg intramuscular and 10 mg of Valium for the hallucinations. Worked very well

Saluut Doctor, I believe Ketamine has been reintroduced for use in serious injury cases here in the UK, obviously the dosages are stricltly controlled but it has been found the be very effective in certain uses.

I was on Eenhana and we had to clear trenches. I stood barefoot in the sand that we had to remove from the trenches. I injured a mole that was on my left foot with the spade. The Dr. decided to remove it and stitch it. The little operation took place in the tent infirmary of Eenhana. He opened a medical field suit and put it over my foot and cut out the mole and put stitches in the wound. The next day my foot started to swell and I got an infection. My foot was so swollen that he had to take the stitches out. I then spent light duty on my back in our section's tent because there was no room in the infirmary. The troops with gastroenteritis on drips occupied the infirmary. There were not enough beds at that time at Eenhana and our section slept on a canvas on the ground. I got a stretcher from the Dr. The kind of stretcher we used to carry off the injured. So I was lying about 30cm above the floor of the tent. For about 2 weeks I lay there. I could barely walk.

Koos, I have heard various time you asking about people abusing the morphine/sosagon in the Ops medic bags. I know for a fact that we had addicts guys from Joburg joining the medics just to have access to these drugs... and have heard about medic guys selling the substances in civy street... Maybe it was just in 4 -SAI situation?? But we had some bad seeds there...

Doctor if I could ask you about a procedure that I heard about when I was in the SADF, it related to placing a needle inro the main nerve cutting off any feeling to the injury eg.If the hand was blown off this needle would be placed in the upper main nerve and then cut off any signals sent to the point of injury, did you ever hear of this or was this BS?

Ketalar(R) (Ketamine) is marvellous, other than side-effects. The patient maintains a swallow reflex and, in a way, is conscious. Very safe in poor circumstances. Patients inclined to have a 'bad trip' while recovering.
