Matthew, thank you my dude! I have been sick for 4 days and today I have been coughing with a dried up throat and lung congestion that I could not cough up no matter how hard I tried. I went out to my local hiking area and collected some goldenrod today after watching your video. I have used goldenrod as a pain killer for years. I soak the upper part of the plant, leaves, stems and flowers in olive oil for 6 weeks, strain and use on muscles and headache. I just shake the jar, (there’s small green bits at the bottom that work great) and rub on the aching muscles, forehead, or neck and it’s very effective. After a year I notice the effectiveness wears so I just make a new batch every fall. At first I thought maybe it was a placebo effect, so I sent a small jar to my daughter. A month passed and I got a call from her asking what was in the oil. What oil, I said…I forgot all about sending it to her, lol She said she had a headache all day and had taken 2 rounds of ibuprofen and still had the headache. Desperate to try anything she thought what the heck, I’ll give it a try. She said she rubbed it on her neck, forehead and along her hairline and her headache was gone within like 15 minutes. Remarkable huh? Love this plant!

@@susanlockinger749 You put empty frames in a producing hive right when the goldenrod begin to bloom; and remove them when the goldenrod are just about finished. The bees will make new honeycomb in the empty frames and make honey in that. Most of the nectar will have come from the goldenrods. It's about timing. The asters begin to bloom just as the goldenrod is finishing. I have collected goldenrod honey and aster honey from the same hive in the same year by carefully timing my hive management and honey collection.

My mother used to have to take an allergy shot every year because she had hay-fever so intensely. I collected golden rod 20 years ago and dried it, mailed it to her with instructions to make tea and drink several cups a day. She drank it all season with no hay fever. Here in SW Indiana there are multiple species of goldenrod, they all vary quite a bit, some so much, you might think they are different plant species. There is a very tall species that can be 6-7 ft. tall and has very different flowering stems that the flower clusters are more wider and spread out, almost opposite shape forms as the smaller goldenrods. It has more flower structures but they are on longer more widely spread ,spaced out overall upper flower stem structures. We have a couple mid sized height species, around 4-5 ft. and they have more tighter flower heads but one can have a clusters of flowers spaced out along the terminal stem. There is a much shorter type also that is short and overall more tighter formed with shorter stems and leaves more compact and dense. The flower heads are also smaller and shorter and almost roundish and globular forms when its a good year and plants have had plenty of moisture. Goldenrod has a unique flower scent, and the leaves have a fruity scent also. Really interesting to know about the ragweed leaves!! I hadn't ever read that anywhere. I will try that next year, its way too late this year, the ragweeds are way gone past the bloom point here. Thanks for all the info. I always liked goldenrod and we grew a bunch of different kinds at our flower, veg and grape farm as we cut goldenrod for florists to use. A couple of the species have flower heads shapes and colors that lend themselves greatly to floral arrangements. I need to collect leaves and flowers right now before they are gone as its already getting cool here and the plants are quickly moving on to rest phase. I kept putting off collecting it last year as i had so much distracting me and it was too late by the time i was thinking about doing it.

I will have to keep my eyes open for Goldenrod. I'm not sure it grows in my area, but I do know Oregon grapes (they are plentiful) have the same active ingredients.

I’ll keep an eye out to find it growing in the woods or wood line etc, but what if one wanted to grow this plant in the garden? I would like to cultivate goldenrod into a woodland garden and harvest whenever I like. Can anyone recommend a seed source? New Sub, so new to this channel.

I googled "buy goldenrod seeds" and several sources popped up. I'm going to collect seeds locally to insure that the seeds are hardy for my area. Wishing you well in your endeavor.

It grows here in Montana.

I haven't seen them that tall. Goldenrod in Montana only grows about two feet tall.

An infusion of the dry or fresh flowers works wonders for my bread head (that's what I call my pressure headache after eating starches like wheat, rice, or corn which I am obviously sensitive to, thus suffer the consequences...)

Great video! I love the suggestion of a ragweed leaf & goldenrod flower tincture combo. Question: when you said the dose is 30 to 60 drops, do you mean each time you use it? Or is that the total limit for a full day? Is your drop roughly 1mL (eyedroppers vary) or some other unit? Thank you so much for a well researched, calmly presented and super informative explainer of this abundant wildflower.

Thanks for watching! That's 30-60 drops per dose, multiple times throughout the day. I guess it would be about 1-3ml per dose.

Hey Matthew, learning a lot from Legacy Wilderness Academy classes. Thanks. Keep up the good work.😊 Have you ever heard of someone using Goldenrod tea as a nasal spray?
@LegacyWildernessAcademy3 ай бұрын
Not goldenrod specifically but I'm sure it would work. I haven't learned how to make herbal nasal sprays yet but that's definitely on my radar. I really want to get a nebulizer and start using herbs that way.

Hey man, love the work but please be more legally careful with the wording you use when describing plant benefits. As a person with growing influence, the FDA will smack you down for taking their paying dependents/addicts away from pharmaceuticals. I would hate to lose access to this bounty of knowledge you provide.

If you record information that is located in numerous books and even on the good old web and share it you can be sued by a 3 letter agency of the government Isn't that a fun thought?

You just steep the flowers in the hot water? What parts do you use?

@@MoniMeka I have only used the leaves, fresh and dried. I hope to try the flowers this year once they bloom. 💛

Yippee they are blooming and I'm gonna give them a try. I'll use 2 tsp fresh blooms and let you know.

I put the flowers (sm. Bits of) in a jar. Pour local honey over. Stir daily for 4-6 weeks. Put a spoon full into tea strainer. Pour hot water over let it steep for 2-3 min Best tea , but even better yet add little bit of lemon 🍋
