The "what, like it's hard?" line is an extra burn when you realize he was put on the waiting list at first and his father had to call in a favor, so in fact, yes it was hard for him. Also, it's unfortunate that Warner says he needs a Jackie and not a Marilyn. Marilyn Monroe was really smart and really progressive for her time. The counselor said she needed at least a 175 to get in. The LSAT question we heard was a real sample question from the actual test. This is one of the few instances that implements the "study with distractions" method, and it pays off. Basically: never try to study quietly. It'll do nothing but make it worse for when you take the actual test. You study with distractions, anything quieter will feel like a piece of cake. And on the flip side: if it is noisy, now you're used to it. And as for her score: A perfect score is a 180. And she got a 179.

One thing that makes Warner even WORSE is notice he took her to a public place, and a FANCY RESTAURANT at that to break up with Elle. This is because he didn't expect her to make a scene. Good for her for not falling into that trap and letting him have it right there and then and embarrassing him.
@videohistory7228 ай бұрын
Something that a lot of people miss: when Warner asks about the costume, Elle pointedly does not throw Vivian under the bus, and just says she did it on her own. It's Vivian fault and she's Warners fiance, but she STILL didn't tell on her.
@miriam83768 ай бұрын
Exactly. Elle Leads by example. Warner talks about needing a Jackie, but Elle had all the class in the world already. She’s not about to tear someone down over a man-not because Vivian deserves it necessarily, but because Elle is better than that.

One thing I like about this movie which was and still is something you never see in romantic comedies like this is that there was no bitchiness between any of the female characters. Even the ones that you think are going to be awful to her in the end come around. All the girls and older women in this movie end up being super supportive of each other. Even Elle's sorority sisters, even tho they don't really understand the legal things Elle gets involved with, still end up super supportive of her and even show up at the trial at the end to be there for her. The women at the mani-pedi place are all supportive of her and she in turn is supportive of the older women there. The female professor even ends up being supportive of her. It's so rare to see a movie like this where there just isn't any tearing down of other female characters to prop up our main character.

To prepare for her role as Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon spent two weeks studying the behavior of sorority girls, as she did not wish to portray a stereotypical airhead sorority image. She states on the DVD commentary that they were all very kind and polite, and she enjoyed her time with them. She also observed women shopping from the café at Neiman Marcus, and attended law school for a day.

The writing was brilliant. Right from the beginning, they showed that Elle is a very smart person. It's just applied to the areas that she was trained in her whole life, which is fashion and beauty. She is able to apply that intelligence to anything she chooses, such as law school. Warner isn't nearly as smart. So the trope of the woman using her beauty to get is flipped upside down as Warner uses his handsome looks and family connections to try to get somewhere.
@oregonchick768 ай бұрын
They made a great point in the commentary about how Elle solves the case with her own knowledge, not something she was taught at Harvard. It makes the selection committee's discussion about accepting the first fashion major a solid argument -- nobody else in Callahan's firm figured it out, after all, so clearly having diverse backgrounds IS helpful in a law setting -- even though in that early scene, they look like they're just trying to justify approving the bikini-wearing applicant. Even if Elle got a break because of her appearance, she was able to demonstrate that she brought actual value to the school and the practice of law beyond just being attractive.
@carsonc82858 ай бұрын

Elle technically could've gotten in trouble if caught claiming to be a lawyer representing someone in a legal dispute before she was a lawyer, but her heart was in the right place going to get Rufus back. Rather than say she was her friend's lawyer, she just needed to claim the same thing she did when in court later, that she was acting as legal counsel. It's an important technicality. Other than that though she did very well sticking up for her friends & herself too. The part where she tells her ex "I'll never be good enough for you, will I?" & looks sad, but then the fire comes back in her eyes, she straightens her shoulders & just walks away, is SO GOOD because she knows inside that something is wrong with his values. It's his inability to see that she's smart, hardworking & full of potential. There's nothing wrong with her, therefore continuing to go after him is a waste because he's the one that's not good enough. Yes, she was hurt at 1st, but she realizes she was in love with a false image he projected & she's not about to settle for that!!

Younger woman, woman positioned lower than the man, woman has long hair worn down and she’s in clothing that makes self-defense more difficult, no audible conversations in the hall, man stands with open posture to intimidate, man moves within reach and blocks exit-so many warning signs that tell women what’s about to happen!
