While Vivian was cruel, I can at least understand why she would be threatened & angered by Elle's presence - Elle was actively pursing Vivian's fiancé, who was his ex-girlfriend of many years, and that too an intelligent, blonde beauty. What I absolutely can't wrap my head around is Enid's behavior. As someone with a degree in women's studies, and a lesbian herself, she of all people should have known that 'femininity' is widely spread across a spectrum. In short, women come in all sorts of various levels of "girly" or "feminine" or not. Sure, she probably has past experience being bullied by typical "sorority girls" but as someone who has studied the history of women (in combat nonetheless) there's no person who should be more aware of how women have been degraded, chained back, and diminished throughout history for choosing to express their femininity (Elle) or not (Enid). That last line about the "dyke" really gets you to understand where the real anger/hatred is coming from. That last chick must've had a really bad experience with "pretty sorority" girls in the past which is horrible. And the other girls were clearly threatened/jealous by her presence. Notice how all these mean remarks were from women. That last chick in particular tho made me draw a real parallel between those whom call other girls "basic" or even look at a dude and instantly say "he looks like a fuckboy". Ik these angsty "I don't fit in" kids are just angry and hurt by past experiences, but remember this scene before U even judge a pretty girl as "basic, stupid, and privileged." Ofc i envy her sometimes, cause she also have rich parents, plus of being blessed with brain and beauty, but I don’t wish her any kind of evil, and I’m really happy for her when she succeed. Sometimes I hate my self because of this, cause I wish I had at least 20% of her look and brain, and luck, but I learned to move on, and to think that there are better things to focus about . We are actually very good friends now and we spend a lot of times together, and I surprisedly learned that she also admire me for my martial art ability and my baddi attitude , cause when a girl try to bully her I always take her defense correctly, and we both strengthen each other in a way. I wish girls could see each other like sisters instead of rivals and competitors. Cause sadly us women are doing an amazing job at backstabbing each other, on the other hand you see many ugly mens getting along with the good looking ones, and the loosers being friends with the popular guys, but you rarely see that with girls which is very odd, cause the moment when a girl is successful and attractive her fellow females will search something négatif to say about her, and see her like the devil, while most men turn into admirers when they see a successful confident alpha man

Vivian is actually the first one to reach out and start a friendship with Elle, because she (perhaps subconsciously) realized that Elle was no longer trying to compete with her. That’s why satan wants to ruin femininity. Because he knows the inherent power of women in our feminine essence which is something feminism never valorised or appreciated. He knows women allowed to be women - sensitive and gentle and caring will thwart his plans for the destruction of mankind. He wants women to be rough and men delicate because effectively you have an entirely emasculated culture then and one that cannot easily stand up to tyrannical government. It will be too enervated and weak. So he wants female headed households which statistically lead to high rates of criminality, delinquency and from whom many prisoners in the criminal justice system have derived.

What Warner said about needing to "marry a Jackie, not a Marilyn" was already sexist and showed he was a jerk and that he didn't really get anything about either Jackie or Marilyn or how what he said was so offensive because it's diminishing Jackie to being 'the proper wife that you get photographed with but cheat on all the time' and Marilyn to the 'dumb blonde bombshell no-one ever has a long term relationship with' forgetting that as well as being beautiful and wearing fantastic clothes they were both well-read and intelligent women who went through a lot in their lives, who were both naturally adored by a public who mourned both women when they died. But one thing about Jackie (that Warner completely missed) that appealed to people was that as well as being stylish and wearing fantastic clothes and being a New York debutant, she was also graceful, elegant and genuinely, naturally classy in a way that appealed to everyone and made everyone adore her, which was why people were crying outside her apartment building when she died. Vivian is East-Coast upper class, but I'd hardly call her behaviour through the majority of this movie classy. I'm not saying she deserved Warner or the way Callahan treated her, but she and her friend were extremely pretentious and snobbish throughout the majority of this film, with no sense of class and though their clothes were likewise very East-Coast upper class they could hardly be called stylish.

There is something tragic about Warner, because it seemed his motivations were laid in appeasing his family. He only went to law school (and got in) because of his family, and was more obsessed with his image than following his heart. That's why he dumped Elle. It wasn't necessarily because he didn't like her, he just needed someone that was better for his political prospects. I actually like the way the musical ended better: Warner does try to get back with Elle but lets him down gently and says she knows they aren't right for each other. And Warner then leaves law and becomes a model and is much happier, and remain friends. Regarding Vivian, I don't think she was snobby to Elle because she viewed her as less than smart. She was defensive because it was clear that she was only at Harvard to get her boyfriend back. I would've been plenty defensive too. So I've a lot of empathy for Warner and Vivian, even at the start of the movie.

as a southern california girl that had a boyfriend from state college pennsylvania (penn state), the times i went there to meet his family and friends i was treated like the bimbo barbie stupid girl. girls were mean to me. those east coast universities are a very stuffy vibe. bland colors, bland clothes, just like kind of bland. i love being a southern california girl, and i have never been treated that way in socal.

Unknown Elle never did anything like that to her. It's just that Enid is automatically lumping Elle into the stereotypical mean sorority girl role based on how she looks. The one thing that I struggle with is getting when you are in class you think you are smart, but at the end you feel belittle because I never studied chemistry in high school or professors put me down because they want me to study blood work for Haematology. Look, as a queer kid I DO understand where Enid is coming from, as much as Vivian. Maybe most simpathyse with the second bc is a more common feeling, that of being jealous of your SO ex, but when you are sorrounded by a bunch of people that literally call you slurs or even hit you, and then you go to another place that might be more progressive (or not) you learn to extrapolate, and if you see someone that looked like the past people, even tho you don't know this specific person at all, IT IS the safest choice to be wary of them, at least where homophobia is concerned, in my opinion, and yeah, her comment wasn't cute and I hope she learns better, as Vivian did, and they end up becoming friends
@marzadky49342 жыл бұрын
"I don't use that word...." That's such an underestimated comment. Yes, based on her character, it's very true, she isn't likely to attack a person on things that they can't change about themselves. Her character would plain blank tell it to your face and offer advice on how to change yourself and even give you recommendation. That's why I think we actually liked her. She was a better version of mean girls in the sense she was Cinderella mean. She just didn't know it or do it with malicious intent.

I agree she had only come to Harvard to get Warner back and he was obviously still attracted to her. Vivian was perfectly justified in being hostile as she was a real threat.
@velvetluna55036 жыл бұрын
While you are right to some extent, I highly doubt Elle was going to flirt or something in front of Vivian. When she saw Vivian's ring, she never even mentioned that she was Warner's ex, and even at the party, she didn't mention that Vivian was a bitch to her to Warner and instead handled her humiliation in a classy manner. Not to mention, Elle was trying to prove her intelligence, so again that reinforces my idea that Elle wouldn't have done something conniving. She was a very classy character, I think she just wanted to get on good terms with people by bringing muffins for everyone.

He explained that they were trying to find someone at the least minute to hire and that they'd called everyone on the list but no one answered. @yvonnepalmquist8676 Жыл бұрын
I don't think Vivian gets a lot of hate. She does get a lot of "Elle pulled it off with more class" comparison. And actually, as the one in the right (because we can all agree that Elle trying to get Warren back was wrong), she should have been the classier one. I think this movie does a great job of showing how even if you are "the one in the right" you also have to handle yourself correctly. In life you don't get to act any way you want, just because you're the one in the right, and I think this movie does a good job of showing that growth and classiness in many of its characters.
