Enjoyed the teamwork Tim. You always showed that given enough time you can do a lot of heavy work even with smaller tractors. But agree that forestry/clearing work is tough on a farm tractor. Guess that is why when I bought my 4066R the JD warranty papers strictly stated that the tractor is not approved for forestry clearing operations. However, probably 70% of it's use is on my 90 acre pine tree farm doing just that. Please don't tell JD that!! But I do have heavy equipment that does the main stumping and large debris pile up. The 4066 is great for lighter duty and finishing clean up. Thanks as always.

I worked as a permit administrator at the state level and we worked with the Army Corps of Engineers on wetland permits. Our requirements were different. We allowed selective cutting for firewood and timber but not clearing. Realistically, that wooded area would be marginal farmland. Seeds would get flooded and not germinate and the crop might not grow well except in a dry year. The farmer would often lose his investment in seed, fertilizer, and tractor fuel and not get a harvestable crop. It also destroys scarce wildlife and songbird habitat in farmland. I was sad to see many hedgerows I used to hunt bulldozed out so they could use larger equipment. You may not agree with wetland permits but there are reasons for them. Those cleared areas might get a decent linear hay crop but there would be no good way to get to it. You could probably tile those areas but that isn't cheap and you won't get your investment back soon and you'd just be moving your water problem on to your neighbor..
@TractorTimewithTim11 ай бұрын
Without the wetland rules, we would fill in these areas, put in reasonable slope for surface drainage and tile it. …the farm the whole 160 in about 1/4 the time (and less fuel, etc), making production much more efficient.
@d.schmidt1611 ай бұрын
"You might not agree with the permits" is basicly saying you might not like me controlling your land, at your expense, and limiting your ability to use your land, but it's for your own good! Takes a lot of hutzpa to say that to farmer

Wetlands are always fun. On my side if things its the intentional constructed wetlands that frustrate me. Retention areas for storm drainage that never properly drain out after rains. Then they become a cat tail and tree infested eyesore. The same people that wanted it there in the first place then no longer want to look at the eyesore. Great job explaineing your particular conundrum and at least attempting to get ahead of the negaitve commenters. Sometimes just saying the word wetland can lead to polarizing disussions.

@williamgaines978411 ай бұрын
The "soft underbelly" is the #1 reducer of the "utility" of tractors. Much could be done to move some of the hoses above the axle line, but it seems the hydraulic hose lobby has more sway than the consumer😉. Great teamwork. The thing to do is make sure it doesn't get back ahead of you(far far easier said than done) but a cutter head or mulcher head on your excavator a couple times a year should keep the regrowth small diameter.

But of course that takes time, planning, etc.
@TractorTimewithTim11 ай бұрын
The 'feds' don't WANT drainage improvements. For example, they won't allow us to put drainage tile in these areas. Nice video, we really enjoy yalls channel. The tree saw is stressful. You bout need to make a small cut on the lower side, then drive around to finish on the bigger trees so you dont get pinched or get one over the cab. On the smaller trees it pushed right over. Maybe a hydraulic top link so you could get 3/4 through and tilt it on over?
@randallmarks118211 ай бұрын
A hydraulic top link would be very useful for the tree saw. On our tractor I’m out of outlets while the grapple is hooked up. The biggest help without it is stepping out of the tractor and getting a good look at which way the tree wants to fall. It’s helpful to have another machine around to encourage the tree to go on over if you get one that wants to pinch the blade or fall where you don’t want it to. You are right about making multiple cuts of some trees. That does help sometimes. Since the video I have run it several more days and I’ve gotten a little better with it. One big help has been trying to tackle smaller trees that the saw can cut all the way through. The trees we were trying to cut were a lot bigger than they looked on video. That added a little more challenge along with not a lot of experience with the tool at that point.

The 1985 Farm Bill told farmers that if you want to retain subsidies and access to farm bill programs, you can't drain wetlands. Farmers can drain and remove vegetation and fill the oxbow so that land could be farmed boundary to boundary if they are willing to forego farm bill benefits. Most farmers do not choose to do that. Most farmers are conservationists who also enjoy the wildlife habitat.

Wetlands are important, but those don't look in the least like wetlands. Also most folks would be doing all this by hand with a chainsaw and hauling the wood away one trailer load at a time. Compared to that you have a lot of equipment to work with.

If you cant use the land why clear it? That the shade might result in some crop reduction its going to be negligible? If you cant use it at least allow natures wildlife to carry on using it.

You do what you wish with your land. We’ll do as we wish with ours.

Sucks when someone takes your land or tells you what you can do with it, huh?
