I think the most profound moment for me is when the actor who plays Quasimodo walks on stage and sings "who is the monster and who is the man?" Before transforming into Quasi right in front of us. Think of the symbolism. There was nothing at all distinguishing him from the other actors on the stage, he was no different from them, until his appearance changed. It embodies the message of the entire show in less than 30 seconds.

I really wanted the ending when they sing that part to have him be center and as he’s signing that line, spotlight on him and to stand completely upright and relax his posture in statue lighting. I also pictured statue like lighting and posture for Esmeralda and Pheoubus as if time had gone on and we’re back at the legend.

It beyond captures the spirit of Hugo's message, and why I consider this the most faithful adaptation of Notre Dame. Phoebus and Esmeralda are vastly more capable and beautiful, but THAT to me is the spirit of adapting Victor Hugo - that we should evolve for our millennium, and to quote, 'the new will kill the old'.

Anybody else notice how Quasi speaks straight when he's by himself (or with the gargoyles), but then his speech is fractured around other people? It shows how he thinks compared to how he looks to other people; That he's totally capable/ competent, but comes off as the opposite to everyone else. That's an awesome little touch! I didn't even realize what it meant until him and Phoebus argue with each other about rescuing Esmeralda...on my third or fourth watch The animation doesn't do this. Also, this is a much more interesting take on Frollo

Troll Time... actually they were to play alongside each other because they both had potential to be great musicals and were too good to be ignored. But In Light of the pandemic Frozen despite its outstanding performances in the time its been on stage will not return, and instead be replaced with musical based on King Of The Hill . And In light of sensitivities The Hunchback Of Notre Dame will not be going to Broadway as they see it is too controversial, and will be replaced with a musical based on Beavis And Butthead. man frollo is so much more gross in this one I really couldn't handle his scenes with Esmerelda and I think that's great. It's due to the fact that in this version he's not a villain from the beginning but a well meaning and slightly misguided man who could've gone either way. He becomes a villain over time as he is poisoned by denial and his inability to hold himself accountable for his actions.

​@@JameZayer I read the book a long time ago, but from what I remember Quasimodo was left in someone else's cradle by the gypsies because he was so ugly, and they stole the baby who had been in the cradle and raised her as a gypsy instead (later it's revealed that baby was actually Esmeralda). The family whose baby was stolen later left Quasimodo on the doorstep of the church. I'm not sure if it was ever mentioned that he was related to Frollo (his younger brother was still alive in the book), but again it's been a long time since I've read it.

Yes, made of stone gave me chills! Literal chills! Quasimodo has so much emotion in his voice! During the song he’s actually try not to cry, when he’s singing, at certain parts, I could hear that he was literally holding back tears while singing. I don’t know if he refuses to let them out, or if he’s just trying to stay strong while singing, or I don’t know why, but I felt that was an interesting thing I wanted to point out. I guess it shows that Quasimodo can be very strong, and tough, but very sensitive still and emotional.

This makes sense, since Victor Hugo wrote both Les Mis and Hunchback. I'm curious to see a musical adaptation of 'The Man Who Laughs', another book by Victor. I haven't read the full story, but I heard a little bit of it. And how the story is about "the parallel between the mutilation of one man and of human experience, Hugo touches on a recurrent theme in his work "la misère", and criticizes both the nobility which in boredom resorts to violence and oppression and the passivity of the people, who submit to it and prefer laughter to struggle." And knowing how shows like 'Squid Game' are getting popular and relevant today, I feel like a musical like 'The Man Who Laughs' would be good too.

I sure hope it gets to broadway someday soon (pun intended)! Unfortunately there's a lot of logistical stuff holding it back. Namely, in negotiations to take it to broadway, they realized the choir would not be insured by the actors' union. Stephen Schwartz (rightfully) argued that the show wouldn't be half of what it is without the choir, so it's been in a sort of stalemate ever since. It sucks because this would be a LEGEND on broadway. Hopefully one day we can get a pro shot on Disney+, but I'm not holding my breath for that either since Disney Corporation would never take a risk in the year of our lord 2021. This is in my top 2 musicals of all time, competing for number 1 with Les Miserables ironically enough lol.

I do love the detail that in this one it seems as if Frolo genuinely does to some extent care about Quasimodo. All throughout the musical there are these pink moments where he genuinely seems to care, like where he stops the crowd from attacking him, mentioning how the world is cruel and uncaring but seeming to tell this out of genuine concern. Of course you also get the impression that he's doing it for himself to save his reputation but they're still at the end of the day this sort of undertone that he cares with Quasimodo being the last family he has left and feels indebted to take care of as a way to honor his brother.

Frollo’s reputation is hurt more so by keeping Quasi in the bell tower than exiling him at all, at least based by the reactions of the congregants when he was made the king of fools during Tupsi Turvy day. Thus in the end, Frollo’s love for his brother was so great that he was willing to keep Quasi for him, maybe trying to protect his religious ego he justified it as being a challenge from god.

I like this version of Hellfire more than the original. Frollo seems more broken, it is less intimidating but more compelling. The visuals are better in the original but this version is still great.

If you wonder why this didn't go to Broadway (and it seems a few also ask why Frozen was instead), there's a simple reason for both. The tone was simply too dark. The risk was just too high. Frozen was chosen because it didn't have such a dark tone and it had proven to be far more profitable. Besides, Frozen's tonal problems are far easier to fix than Hunchback's. While it is a shame we couldn't get both on Broadway, I'm glad the Frozen one was good (despite my expectations, I didn't think it'd come close to the original) and Hunchback still got this stage musical.

The entire huge choir would have to had been paid as union members which is very expensive (although worth it imo) but Disney basically told Alan Menken he’d have to cut the choir and he refused so it didn’t transfer. Which is the right choice I think, it wouldn’t be the same show without the choir

I love when he Quasimodo jumps up and down when his master starts telling him about the story. I can't tell you what this musical means to me. The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been my absolute favorite movie for a long time. Hearing the musical for the first time was life changing.
