The 1.8T was my first introduction to owning anything close to a "performance" car too in my Ibiza Cupra. A light remap and induction mods for just over 200 brake on a car that weighs around the 1100kg ballpark really does feel punchy. I remember picking up the car for the first time, hitting 3k RPM in second gear and really being blown away by meaty the torque felt at such a low rev range. Remarkably good engine for the era it comes from.

Not that you'd want to _sell_ it, given its sentimental value! It does give an incentive to _keep_ it, though. The Mk1 TT broke moulds (literal and figurative, you could argue!) when it was released. I had a '99 MK1 TT 225 coupe from new and after a couple of years had AMD work their magic on it taking output to a reliable 270BHP. I also had the exhaust and shocks/springs changed at the same time and it really transformed the car. The extra power and torque was very noticeable but it was the handling that was most transformed as it dialled out a lot of the body roll that can be seen from the car on track in your clip. That engine always felt really strong and maybe I did not really appreciate how good it was at the time. Almost bought the car back a few years and many miles later and it was still delivering the goods. I keep looking at used Mk1 TT prices and telling myself that they cannot get any lower, seems finally to be some appreciation for the car now.

My japanese maternal uncle owned a 2004 Audi A4 Avant B6 Quattro in dark blue with this 1.8T 20v engine and he took me in that car to the japanese alps in Nagano for skiing and hiking annually for nearly 10 years. He did some really naughty speeds and it definitely was one of the catalysts that got me to becoming a petrolhead and appreciating sporty estates/wagons. I liked the moment of 'decel' - it had a beefy bassy tone for a 4 cylinder and at times it almost had a subaru EJ boxer-like rumbling sound. My paternal irish aunt had an Audi TT 1.8T 225ps in a lighter shade of blue but without this sporty package that the car in this video had. I drove it trough europe many times as the flights were canceled etc. I made 30000 in one year and it still runs like a clock and overtakes and competes with newer cars easily with 330000km. The consuption on highway is around 6,5l/100km. During this period I had to replace alternator, battery, spark plugs and oxigen sensor.. I did all the work myself by watching youtube, except alternator and timing belt . I also change oil and filters myself easily. A very happy owner of a MK1 TT 225hp. Beside the design of my car, I absolutely love the engine. The engine revs happily to the redline and has lots of low end torque above 2200 rpm. All that being said the vacuum system in these cars is a nightmare when they get old and cracked. My advice if you start getting leak on vacuum system, replace the whole system. It's pricey, but you're done for 20 more years if done correctly. Also as they get old it is common to have some old leak and coolant leak. But which sport car from early 2000 does not have its own flaws and character.

180 versions had 19mm pins, 210&225 versions had 20mm pins. The only other version that featured the larger pins was the early 150 engines, found in cars between '94 and '99-mid2000. Those early engines also had what's now called a "bigport" head, with bigger intake and exhaust runners (the valve sizes were the same), which made them more suited for high horsepower applications when the owner couldn't afford a head porting job. Most turbo engines had a forged crank and cast pistons, however the 210 & 225 had aluminum forged Mahle pistons with lower compression (9.0 from 9.5). All version had cast I-beam rods, with differences in wrist pin sizes, as mentioned.

I had one of these in a Mk1 Octavia VRS and with a custom remap (v-power 99 Oct fuel) and cat-back exhaust it made 239 bhp and never, ever had an issue. Great engine.

I had the 150hp version in a Seat Alhambra. It got me my first ever speeding ticket at the age of 53! 96.7 mph on the M1. I had been doing over a ton, but fortunately had slowed down a bit when they caught me.

I've never been a VAG fan, but I ended up buying a cheap MOT failure TT 225 a few years ago to fix and sell on, and it's managed to stay ever since, everyone who drives it becomes attached to it, everyone who's never driven it, however, are filled with hate for it!

1:40 - the Cordoba was released well before the Leon (around 1994 or so) and was based on the 2nd gen Ibiza. It was popular in countries where large engined cars are heavily taxed so people prefer saloon versions of small cars (which still come with small engines). That said, I never knew the cordoba was fitted with the 1.8 20v. Probably because I grew up in one of the said countries where no one bought this variant...

I had a mk1 seat Leon Cupra 180, loved that car apart from the faded yellow paint.

My only experience with this 1.8T was also in a Seat Leon Mk1, but only on for a test drive. Enjoyed it quite a lot actually, should have probably bought that instead of the rusty Mazda 3 I ended up with. I think it showed a check engine light half way through the test drive, which is not nice, but I guess this could have been fixed by the dealer quite easily.

The Vauxhall Red Top 2.0 16 valve was regarded as the finest 16 valve engine for a long time. The head was designed by Cosworth and put out a very impressive for the time 156 bhp and race versions (Touring cars, Rally etc) put out 300bhp naturally aspirated. It was a fantastic engine, especially in the Astra GTE 16v. I owned one back in the 90s and other hot hatches (and bigger cars) of the times weren't much competition in a straight line. It's a shame the handling wasn't of the same standard but once used to its foibles it was a fun car (very scary at over 120mph!) Mine was around 8 years old and I used to drive it flat out down our local bypass, so that was over 130mph daily for about 4-5 years! It handled that abuse perfectly, never once did I have any real problems with the car. I miss it!

i had a B5 A4 1.8 turbo 20v quattro. it had bigger injectors, Gt28RS turbo, custom exhaust manifold, Vems ECU. Bodykit, repainted in Dodge Viper blue.... It was a quick car. around 260-270 hp. Loud blowoff noise... I read somewhere that these 20v engines were originally developed for touring car racing and then taken and made to fit into road cars. Something like that. Lot of years have passed since i owned that car.

From Audi A4 wikipedia page B5 section: "The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. " :)

I played with B5 S4's- 2.7t and tdi's for ages. I am currently playing with my first 1.8t and am really enjoying it. I totally get the attraction. The plan is to slap a gtx2867 on it with supporting mods and hurt my s4 friends feelings at S4RW.

the rods are a weak point even on standard abused 1.8T's then badly mapped cars with massive torque/boost spikes. 11 years had a tuned mk4 now with 120k miles, hybrid turbo, bigger injectors still standard internals and no issues others than general maintenance costs. Not bad for an 18 year old engine
