CLARIFICATIONS!! READ THIS AFTER WATCHING! First off thanks for watching guys! With something like this its easy to overgeneralize, forget something, or get details wrong. 1. First part of the video about 06A vs 058 being large/small port with 19/20mm pins was a massive over-generalization. Link below for actual facts on the 43 different engine codes for the 1.8T. Please do your research on what your engine is. www.bar-tek-tuning.com/1.8t-engine-codes 2. The crank gear needs to be dealt with at these power levels. Best option is a billet crank gear ($200)that is press fit on. Dowel Pinning is another but it has been known to fail. 3. ?? Please comment and let me know what I missed! Lets keep this up to date!! Great video!! I am in the process of a similar build using a 06A block with a AEB head and lots of other goodies. I think the video is very informative but a press for crank gear is a must, also using ekagrip diamond shims and arp bolts throughout is a must also ARP bolts for the mains is a good idea. Adjustable cam gear is a good idea as well as swapping AMB cam chain tensioner and trigger wheel to use in a AEB head will help with boost and NA cams with some overlap will help as well. Lots of NA 1.8 cams available out there ADR has 2 different versions. ADR are known to have the most lift. I personally got APT cams as I couldn’t find ADRs with the lift I wanted. Ceramic coated AEB pistons will do the job.

Porting the head will help with turbo lag, torque band, lower cylinder pressure/temperature, and overall power gain from every additional component that improves the air flow. When done right on a big turbo big cam build, it is really easy to get 40hp or more out of porting the head properly, and you will gain a lot more drivability too. It is one of the few upgrades that makes the build better in every way with no sacrifices/compromises. Must do in my opinion

This was very informative. Just one thing I didn't hear about was the fuel. I remember when I was younger I did as much as I could on a budget on my AWP 1.8T and wish I would have known about the first bottle neck which is the fuel. I had no software, just a 4.3 volt diode on my map sensor so it doesn't go into limp mode and then manual boost controller. I pushed about 23-24psi out of that KO3s. I did do a full custom 3" exhaust, intake, diverter valve and front mount intercooler. The impressive thing was that I could take on stage 2 APR and GIAC stage 2 setups.

oh and another crap piece that kept going out was my coil packs. I think went through 5 of them in the 4 years I owned my GTI. I ended up getting Audi S8 coil packs which never gave me issues once installed.
@budgetoutlaws99784 жыл бұрын
I have another video about fuel. It's a bit generic, but it goes into sizing a system for your power goals. Check out my playlist on how to build power for a quick link to it. I really can't reccomend the diode mod, however I have seen it done. The Wideband ecu's can be cracked pretty much for free now aways so there's no real need to go that "80s" with it ;) I had an APR tune, it's really conservative, typically only 17psi, so I'm not surprised your able to blow them apart. Apr /GIAC made a conservative boost table (Depending on which tune was flashed) and bumped timing up to try and increase the longevity of the turbos.

I gotta say, I really appreciate you taking the time to spell all this out in a easy to understand video. There isn't too awful much in depth talk of things like this for the 1.8t. I have done hours upon hours of reading on the internet about the 20v 1.8t but hearing someone speak about it is super nice. One question I have is about using an oem timing belt vs the Gates Racing Kevlar belt. I've heard the kevlar is known to snap but is it worth it for the power? Is it really that prone to snapping? If you had any input to that, I'd love to hear it. Also, the use of 2.0T coil packs vs oem coils. I've been using 2.0T coil packs and NGKBKR7E copper plugs at 0.028. Stage II software on a AWW engine. Change every 10k miles. I keep seeing people using platinum and iridium but I've read several places that the 1.8t doesn't like them. I'd also like your input on a good turbo to replace my tired k03. I'm looking to make around 400hp as reliable as possible. Not chasing lap times or 1/4 mile times. ( i wrote this comment right before you said something about another episode about turbos )
@budgetoutlaws99784 жыл бұрын
Thats the exact reason why I wanted to make a video. Lots and LOTS of posts about it but no one has gone and put it to speak, or explained why certain things are the way they are.. Gates belt is certainly a good choice if you have that option. Its only available for the 06A motor though. OEM coil packs gets into ignition of the engine, I only wanted to go into the basic mechanics of the engine in this video (It was already 25 mins long..). Certainly worth the extra spark of the later coilpacks (Whichever option you go, there are a few). Plugs are certainly another issue. I've ran platinum before, and many tuners like to just run the NGK's because they are tried and true and they KNOW they wont have issues with it. I'll have a turbo sizing video in a couple months. Fuel injection is next (Possibly this weekend). 400CHP reliably depends on a lot of factors. Some people run Hybrids that high, but your really pushing a small frame quite a lot. Pro would be spool. You can make 400 on a GT2871 or 76, or get into the newer turbo tech.. A G25-550 is a solid choice as you have headroom plus you wont be pushing the turbo to its max (Im a fan of leaving headroom, less PSI and less heat, plus less stress on drivetrain and engine internals), but the cost of that turbo is high. You could go the chineese G25-550 option but you would have to get it balanced at a turbo shop. Its really all about budget.

@@budgetoutlaws9978 my next step is looking for the turbo comparison video. These are great videos thanks. Is a ko4 really a bolt on upgrade for the ko3 turbos on a 2001 b5 A4 1.8t AWM(early) or is there more to it than just plug and play? It's a quattro avant and it's been chipped. I've recently done a Gates racing timing belt, stage 2 SB daily clutch, 034 HFC, and it has a few other goodies too.

Picking this engine simply for the sheer abundance. The 2.2 will always be the wet dream but.. It's so much more rare. Plus one more cylinder means one extra rod, rings, lifters, valves, springs, nuts and bolts etc. I generally learn by failing and I'd rather on a 1.8 :D

Great information! I'm in the process of build a 1.8t stroker on 06A block. I'll be using the 2.0T FSI crank with aftermarket rods. I was wondering which 2.0Tf factory forged pistons would work with this build? Boring and honing is not a problem. I really don't want to drop $1k on aftermarket pistons, especially since I won't be making the power most of them are rated for. Thanks!

Hi Andrew, 2 questions: #1. The 83mm overbore pistons equates to nearly 0.0080 inch overbore or about a loss 2 mm of block material between each cylinder. When do we worry about heat dissipation problems or cylinder wall structural integrity, especially when running a bigger turbo or higher boost? Will a high volume electric water pump help to offset the extra heat? #2. I see a torque plate in your video. Any chance I can borrow, rent or buy from you? Renu is doing the lower block rebuild in Modesto.

How about using MAHLE pistons and rods (from germany), found a forged set of pistons for the 5 cylinder turbo Audi Engines, they may cost a little more but the quality is just on another level...
@budgetoutlaws99784 жыл бұрын
MAHLE is an OE supplier for a lot of brands including Porsche for many years. I would trust them. I wasnt aware they made rods though, they are well known for their pistons. Be sure to check your end to end length and journal diameter is the same for the 5 cyl and the 4 cyl for your application. Also your wrist pins should match the rods. Only mentioning this if you dont use those matched rods.

Appreciate the informative video my g! Just bought a 1.8t 20v s3 and looking into getting around 400whp next year. Any suggestions on the haldex system? Heard you can tweak up the ratios but not sure how much hp it can take
@budgetoutlaws99783 жыл бұрын
I don’t have any first hand experience with the Haldex system but I know there are plenty of guys in the 400+ range with them. Try and keep the torque from being peaky and you should be good. Have fun! I would love to get my hands on a TT or S3.
@pokecollect323 жыл бұрын
Mine is currently at 523hp with the factory haldex using a haldex controller to split the ratio. Have been running that for about a year now like that. It will depend on how well the haldex has been maintained but also they do have there limits. Have seen one go with 450hp a few months ago so it's really a grab of the straws.

Me too . I'm not a vag guy historically I'm a Honda guy .But a civic type R is £5000 . TT is £1000. It's already boosted and 4x4 . Yes it's no where near as good as a k series . But the entire package as base point it's a no brainer really . Making a civic 4wd is a massive task and over 300 hp fwd is not really the one unless you just want a drag car . But I'm all about grip cars and corners. I'm just looking for a budget build b road blaster and the maths says get a tt . I do want over 300hp though which means rods at least to be reliable long term . K it's like just add boost and go all the way up to 600. But I think over all having to open the engine might be worth it for all the other work I won't have to do elsewhere.

The factory tensioner works very well. People who want an upgrade typically go with a manual tensioner kit Which does not contain a belt normally. As far as upgraded else go gates makes one for specific variance so you’ll have to check to make sure if it’s your engine.
