As a pro musician who has been in the industry for over 25 years I can honestly say I have played with or seen such incredible singers that would smoke most people on these so called talent shows. But they won't enter because they are 1, older, or 2, dont want to denigrate themselves on a glorified talent contest. Its a shame. Its horrible. The industry is F'd.

I think most people got the bullshit with these shows from the start. She's just stating what the audience out there already knew for quite awhile. there's nothing amazing about that. What's more amazing is the moronic people who still watching these shows to this day.

I have to agree. Most of the American Idol, and The Voice contestants sound like generic run around town singers. Not saying they're bad, but I've never heard one that made me say WOW! And she's right, they're not artists, they're people who sing, and singing...someone else's song no less, isn't going to get you a mansion in Malibu with a shelf full of Grammy's. There's tons and tons of people who can sing.....but not everyone can be an artist.

I can tell you that if you go to any karaoke bar in the Philippines, on any given night there will be 5-6 potential American idol winners there. Good singers are a dime a dozen.

That's true but it seems that the majority of people want pop, but I think that you need to be more than a singer, you need to be an artist with your own vision

Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson can sing but that is it, Jennifer does act. Other then that it’s like ok. Kelly clarkson I would agree is a beast I believe she write music, just a beast at what she does.

I was a top 5 contestant on The Voice and Linda is 100% right. It's a very hollow form of success. I was 21 years old at the time and I went on the show because I wanted to be famous. I wanted adulation and recognition (that I hadn't earned) And it amounted to nothing but a few months of good paying gigs. I erroneously thought that people watched those shows looking for new artists to follow their eventual creative output but I was wrong. They watch because they like that tv show, and nothing more. Now I make my music and put it out which is enough for me, but I have released 10 albums since then and all of the people who "voted for me" don't support it in any way. My original music is completely over-shadowed by the 10 karaoke songs I recorded for The Voice. What Linda Perry is saying is a tough pill to swallow, and it's the reality. I love her.

Song writing, Linda. It's song writing you're looking for. I agree wholeheartedly. These talent show people, for the most part, are not song writers. Absolutely, who cares if they can sing. That will not sustain a career. To be an artist you have to create. They're not creators.

The music industry has changed beyond recognition in recent years, the true artists, the ones with talent are ignored if they are not attractive on camera or won't bend at the knee to the record labels or express opinions not widely respected, meanwhile the record company's care about one thing, the bottom line, how much money can we make out of this attractive audience pleasing sucker, before we throw them to the dogs and consign them to the vast music history quick fire library, Linda's right, most wouldn't have made it without BGT ............. Most can read a book, it doesn't mean everyone can write one.

i believe she is true, i've hit the grind for years, maybe a little over 20 years now. and over twenty years ago i had that dream of a gold record. I was young, i could and still play music. Now these days the songs i write and play for people has the best meaning to me then the songs people who all a sudden made the idol can ever write. The years, the bands, man, it has been such a deadly experience for me. Anyway's, I believe in the experience, the true experience when it come's to trying to make it in the biz, the songs i wrote and performed for people and loved ones..., man. its so easy though still hard to explain. the thing is i will write and perform on my own terms. its easier for me to remember lyrics when i can remember that time and place in my life. From Canada, with a cold beer in my hand, watching a hockey game on CBC and not to mention a guitar beside me.

I agree with her. There are probably 500k or more people in this country that can sing at least as well as and probably better than most of what we see on those shows, who never get their break for a lot of different reasons. A lot of people on The Voice and Idol are there because of their story (that's what sells advertising), not their talent.

SHE'S so Right !! I love Linda Perry ! She's still having the 90's spirit ! All those trashy Reality shows of the 2000's and 10's, about "great singers discovered" are a complete trash ! .. ruined the music industry ! .. They are not real artists ! .. You don't go to a reality for express your art ! .. A lot of people can sing well .. They're just generic .. Sing with a great voice and have 10 producers behind you, that made your songs, is not being an artist ! .. Being an artist is other thing .. Alternative bands, indie bands, they know pretty well what is that .. But trashy pop stars don't know .. Is not about money ! Or recognize, or fame ! .. Is about made something really good, express something .. Really .. Britney Spears is gonna judge you ??? XDDD Even an unknown musician from San Francisco streets is thousand times better judge than they .. Those realitys are only made for middle class dumbs that think music is only about "have a nice voice, have fame, and make everyone cries with the hard story of your life" .. xDDDD What's up with the unpleasant and nihilist spirit of the 90's ?? Can we recovered it for once more ?

For all those who feel the music inside, go out there, let it out, try all avenues, karaoke bars, restaurants, video yourself, go out express yourself. Absolutely right. All these contestants come and go,and after 3 or 4 seasons, you don't even remember who was the fourth place couple seasons ago...and the one that won that season, put out popcorn records and become popular for a year, next year, the next winner takes the one year ride, and the cycle repeats...all it's left at the end are these "singers" barely surviving in the tough waves of the music ocean. Unless you are Aretha Franklin,Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder who can at least write your own songs let alone become timeless hits, all of these shows are just too cruel to young people.

I want to have Linda's babies. She's so cool and one of the few that isn't blinded by the crap (originally Popstars format) 'American' Idiol garbage. It's the worst thing to ever happen to music in America. 99.99% OF chart music is commerical shit made by Swedes who shoudn't even be in the country and they are destorying the once thiving music industry that gave us legends like The Rolling Stones. The sooner the public realize they are being sold an old and laughable format by businessmen with no imagination, the better.

I can agree and disagree with her on this. She's right about them never being discovered. She is also right about some not being artist. On the other hand those competitions are like filling out an application for a job. Sometimes you have absolutely no experience in the field you are applying for. If you are lucky enough to get hired, you have someone to guide along the way, until you learn the business. It's the same exact way in the entertainment business. Sometimes it works out and other times it doesn't.
