The reason I use the tail is to keep the momentum going. Of course you can leave the tail out and just strike again from the other side, however, the tail, when understood can create more power on the returning strike. It also breaks the rhythm up and when coupled with simple backhands and forehands can keep your opponent on their toes as to when the strike is actually coming in. Glad you all enjoyed the video! There might be a third Tail video coming down the pipeline when I get around to it! WOOF! ~ Guro Guard Dog

Great breakdown on what could be a very difficult skill to master. One of the best videos I've seen on this technique

we were vacationing in the Philippines few years ago and we saw a group of people doing this with semi contact and let me tell you a whack with this stick is gonna hurt more than any punch any man can throw.

The dog brother at the introduction says that basically all you need in a real fight are the basic moves he shows, and i agree with him. i think the tail is a good wrist flexibility exercise and co ordination exercise. can not see any use in a real fight or even in sparing. i teach combat escrima and the rattan stick is merely a training tool for using a extendable steel baton that you can always carry with you. i would not recommend using the tail , floreti, against a real attack on the street
@muhammadmustafiz80408 жыл бұрын
escrima thanks for that. i have never seen a dog tail movement explained for combat which i thought would not be very good. i felt a return diagonal down from the opposite side of the first is more useful
@escrima5608 жыл бұрын
from my 30 years plus experience in combat escrima I would say you are exactly right, what you are describing is also known as the X strike , I think this is more powerful and faster. Out on the street keep it basic and Simple. I practice the tail and quite a few other strikes that I would never even dream of using against brutal street violence, I practice these for enhancing Co ordination and wrist flexibility. can't find any dog brother video of any of them using the tail in sparing. I really admire the dog brothers but this is really a pretty technique that has no use in reality. I'm willing to be proved wrong if somebody can furnish the proof.

Yep, if he would just leave out the tail and just strike again, he would have a much higher cadence and therefore an advantage. I totally agree with you and Top Dog.
@3gsummit5 жыл бұрын
escrima The florete is a slower strike and can be used as both a bridging attack on the 1 and 2 line and also counter-offensively particularly on the 2 line as seen here. What it does do is take your hand slightly off line protecting it against a potential hand strike.

I don't see why I should do a redondo, when my hand is already in position for a backhand like at 2:04.
@bernd90006 жыл бұрын
same thought here. can anyone give an argument for doing the shown move? would be appreciated, thx
@Wavemaninawe4 жыл бұрын
I can do a follow up strike much faster, by simply throwing any angle of backhand. So I agree... I dont see a *need* to use this transition. I can however see a *use* for it, since it may allow for a smother flow of follow up strikes. Hence it could mean that some other attack telegraphs less. Interesting. I will play around with this and check how it feels.

So y'all think that the dog brothers are the best of the best stick fighters?
@team1martialartsfitness1306 жыл бұрын
For years the dog Brothers have definitely been at the top of the stick fighting world, because they're willing to question current Doctrine. Anyone who has the courage to ask why we'll find better ways of doing things. The dog-brothers have taken a very complicated art that like many traditional martial arts has a lot of things that's great on paper but not so great an application. Because of this they have simplified the art is down to its essential components and then built a more combat or contemporary stick fighting art on that premise

"the tail" or Florette....

Curtis Giesbrecht This "tail" is not a florette lmao.
@curtisgiesbrecht83257 жыл бұрын
xxFairestxx indeed it is.
@xxFairestxx7 жыл бұрын
Curtis Giesbrecht No, it isn't. The florette is a completely different strike mechanically. If you think a florette is designed to continue momentum...incorrect. This "tail" is a different strike all together, designed for momentum control.
@VTSifuSteve6 жыл бұрын
Why argue over words ...especially when they are used differently in different systems? For us, "florete" --from the Spanish word for a fencing foil-- really means a "flouish" (floritura) and could be applied to a variety of movements including a redondo, and movements such as these. Really, these are more like compact figure-eights. Depending on how you train, they will either lead to some useful combinations ...or conversely to useless decoration. Which one is is up to you.

fancy bs. been in 2 real fights with batons. everyone just swings for abandon. this is just flashy crud.
@chaos_omega8 жыл бұрын
Out of all the stick fighting groups you could have called flashy crud... and the DOG BROTHERS are the ones you choose? These guys are some of the only martial artists that spar with weapons and hard contact. Do some research next time, so you don't look like a jackass. I mean, unless you want to look like one.

Why have you been in two separate fights with batons?
