Why do Singaporeans like to complain about the price of hawker food but have no qualms paying 10 dollars for a McDonald meal or even mediocre coffee shop western food. Even when evidently, more effort goes into making this plate of hk mee.

In my personal opinion... I actually think $6 is worth it. I (or my peers) will easily pay $6-7 on a cup of bubble tea or Starbucks coffee. Paying $6 for years of practice, trial and mastery, sounds better than $6 for brown sugar milk tea... 😁😁😁
@jasperteo84433 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t mind paying $6 but the portion is too little
@streen20003 жыл бұрын
I think if you want to showcase legendary hawker stalls and yet say on your first episode that you can't imagine paying more than 4.50 for Hokkien Mee... Don't be surprised if there aren't any legendary stalls left in a decade or so.
@desfoo77943 жыл бұрын
Agreed, was just about to say something along those lines too. People tend to look for pay rises in themselves with their jobs, yet are quick to put down the value of a product that you don’t know or see; below the tip of the iceberg the work and sweat that goes through to get that plate to you: the consumer. Keep the hype going so we retain hawkers not by saying they overprice their food.

I absolutely love it when Mandon does food reviews. He’s so detailed and really knows how to describe food without just giving basic answers like oh it’s nice or crispy or well seasoned. He really is a foodie !

It is extremely disheartening and disappointing to hear that locals (including the host) are not willing to pay higher than $5 for local hawker food (hokkien mee in this case). While some of us have no qualms paying over $8-$10 for a lousy or normal tasting ramen or pasta from a similar hawker stall. The ingredients of hokkien mee easily cost more than ramen or pasta and locals expect hokkien mee are expected to be priced lower than them. I don't get it. Apart from the ingredients, let's not forget the number of years put in by the hawker (40years?) to hone their skill. We know that many hawkers work more than 12 hours with no year-end bonus, annual leave, medical benefits etc which most of us are entitled to. Let's be kind to our hawkers and remunerate them duly before we lost Singapore precious hawker heritage.

Pay $6 for Boba or Starbucks you wouldn’t bat an eyelid, yet for a plate of Hokkien mee it’s almost hesitant? Please be grateful for the hawkers and pull them up not devalue them. Love the videos team keep them going I miss Singaporean hawker foods! Where I’m from a plate of Hokkien Mee is only existent through the black-sauce Malaysian style that costs $15-16SGD per plate!
@RobertHeslop3 жыл бұрын
$6 is fairly reasonable. I could easily see that in London for about £9 which would be like $16.91 (SGD)

Hmm it's weird and surprising to see that Singapore's hokkien mee is dryish instead of being a soup based one
@ChangeWorld4Better3 жыл бұрын
I am quite surprised he like the dry version, I think this version (semi wet - the stock) is probably the favorite version
@shengxiang32533 жыл бұрын
@@ChangeWorld4Better yep personally the soup based one is pretty flavourful but people tatse buds be different
@veronham613 жыл бұрын
@@shengxiang3253 Actually hokkein mee simply means noodles from hokkein or hokkein style noodles. In the 19th century ,many Chinese hokkein immigrants came to S'pore to look for a living,it's not surprising that some of them(or their descendants) started selling their own version of 'hokkein mee' in the streets. We also have the soup based one, it's called 'hae mee'(虾面).

I believe a lot of legendary stall local food are all handled by the owner themselves. Hence I believed it is their hardwork and experience over time that attract many still patron their food. Who as youngster to judge good or no good these veteran stall. Some not even born in this world when these stall are there. We should study and learn from them as most owner growing old. Each have their own authentic taste, there no one better than the other as long as by local uncle or auntie or their 2nd generation sweat, time and hardwork. If all these are gone, next generation have nothing left for them to taste the 古早味。
