Thanks for highlighting a great historical story about what occurred there in Virgina City and Bannock. It is still with us here in Montana today. The vigilantes used the numbers 3-7-77 and they are still used on the vehicles, badges, and uniforms by the Montana Highway Patrol. No one knows exactly what the numbers refer to, I lean toward the dimensions of a grave, but there are other ideas. The vigilantes didn't just grab random people. They set honey pot traps by gossiping and having "drunk" slip ups about who had struck it and who was riding out to cash in. Said person would ride out with the vigilantes following. A lot of those hung were caught by the vigilantes. Henry Plummer was either part of it or didn't do anything to stop it. The reason the Highway Patrol wears it to this day? It's simple, Do your job to protect the citizens, or they will do it for you.
