Archaon with his faction effect increasing stats per chevron and his skill tree makes chosen super strong and huge tanks. They can tank multiple missile units firing at them and as soon as they close the distance they chop everything down in seconds. It simply isn't true that melee infantry is unusable trash on legendary.

I will say that while honestly having full melee infantry isn't great on higher difficulties, the chaos roster doesn't really have anything to rely on early on. Shaggoths are the best thing they have, but it takes time to get those, so until then you're either spamming infantry and just hoping you don't end up in a disaster like this. Building a balanced army, which doesn't work too well as while hellcannons aren't bad on ultra, they do not do enough damage on ultra to be worth taking unless you have at least 3 of them. And even then it's not ideal, but they don't have any other ranged units besides skirmish cav, which can do well, but they're very weak to archers and other cav. But anything made early game only has one real goal, being decent enough that you survive until you get Shaggoths, cause honestly without using Shaggoths I'd find it very hard to manage a Chaos campaign without being constantly worried about ending up in a disaster. So yeah your army is kinda expected of a chaos army, though not having chosen instead of chaos warriors by this point is a bit of a mishap in my opinion. Otherwise it's just best to be extra careful as Chaos, as it's a hard faction to play as, Order Tide chases you to the Chaos wastes every so often, and Norsca is borderline useless as a vassal for taking care of enemies. The only thing they do is provide you a small income boost and at least provide a distraction for enemies.

this is why I don't like to play in the upper end of the higher battle difficulty... I can't use the units I liked the most without cheesing the game to an extent and sure I can win... but I am disproportionally punished for using the units I liked more in favor of units I don't just for the simple fact that the AI gets absurd bonus in melee that made units which normally would've won in a straight up clean fight, loses... I mean, I get that this is the simplest difficulty slider... just add stats for the AI but it's frustrating to watch units that in every way, shape and form should normally win on a clean fight, like chaos warriors... struggling to kill basic cannon fodder infantries... Being forced to use certain type of units in that difficulty just to have a more tolerable battles... makes it so not worth it to play in that battle difficulty for me, I'd much rather increase the campaign difficulty.

It’s one of the things I have always hated about the TW series. Instead of ramping up the ability of the AI, as in getting them to do more advanced tactics, as the difficulty is ramped up they just artificially increase their stats. I started playing back in the original Shogun but never noticed this until Empire when I noticed that the AI on max difficulty fired faster and didn’t break, I think it was easier to notice in that game due to its focus on ranged as opposed to melee combat. It really irritated the shit out of me when a crappy unit of non vet line infantry could outshoot my 3 gold stripe unit of Guards. It’s just lazy coding.

@@kevinstobbs9134 Yeah, though to the exact extent remains to be seen, if they make the buffs too small without doing anything else, then the game becomes too easy for some. If they barely reduce the buffs then it'd still mean melee infantry would be discouraged in use (technically still more viable, but the difference between 20% to maybe 15% is not a big difference). I hope they cut the buffs to about half, maybe give them either more armor, or missile strength to make up the loss of melee stats, but those come with their own issues, admittedly an increase in armor isn't too big a deal for most cases, but increase in missile strength would be. But really I just wish that it was small buffs and instead the AI gets smarter on higher difficulties. As I'd rather be challenged tactically by the AI then be challenged due to melee and cav being not too viable.

Is totally viable to do a full infantry stack on legendary, you just must be really good at taking the right upgrades and traits, specially with Archaon. No chees need it. It gonna take a couple more turns to raze the entire world but they can do it.

@@ZxMoonLightxZ Viable with Archaon, yes, efficient, no. And given how often I play Chaos, I know how much of a pain it is to use anything other than Shaggoths. Namely against Empire, Dwarfs, and High Elves. If fighting lizards it's not as bad, if fighting vamp counts then you can use infantry just fine, Dark elves are a nightmare, greenskins are easy enough, tomb kings aren't too hard, etc. Basically the more missile focused a faction is, especially when they have armor piercing and artillery, the less viable melee infantry is. Now, even though it's not efficient, and not as good, I do still use Chosen, with Chaos Knights for Archaon, and 2 to 3 hellcannons, it's not as good as Shaggoths, and in some battles casualties are massive. It works, just not as well. Which is a shame, I want to use thematic armies, on harder difficulties, but it's not very effective, and it's much more trouble in most situations. It's also why I like Kholek so much, his thematic army, is the doomstack for the faction, Shaggoths and Dragon Ogres, it works well. Summoners of Rage are a good RoR to put in his army and will be very useful. I just want them to give Chaos more things to make them work, which will happen in game 3, just need to wait for it.

Little tip when doing blob up formations like this is to select the blob after they're in position, and press the halt command, this makes it so they stop moving and doesnt lose the entirety of their vigour (yes i saw he did this but that was once the bretonnians were nearly upon them already)

Chaos with infantry spam uses essentially the same tactic that Vampire Lords with Skelli spam do. All units in one tight block, letting the enemy charge in and kill any missile unit with magic. Sadly Chaos doesn´t have the healing the Undead can cast on their troops, but they have higher combat stats and WAY more armour.

To be fair there's very few options you as a player can do with Chaos early on. Given the general go to is to demolish the marauder building, get the chaos warrior building, and then spam those until you have built up enough growth to get more versatility in your army, which basically means, either using hellcannons and adopting the closest thing to a turtle playstyle you can as Chaos. Spamming Shaggoths or dragon ogres. Or trying to build a more cav focused army, or you can try to make a balanced army, there's no real guarantee it'll do well, but at least it'd not be all melee infantry, though honestly playing Chaos there is not really anything you can do, most of your best units are melee infantry, or heavy cav, Shaggoths are the best unit in the roster, but are expensive and you need to wait longer to get them than you would chosen or chaos warriors. So really there's no way to handle this well, that said this player is far enough into his campaign to have had at least chosen, but he doesn't which is a bit of a mishap in my opinion. Though really Chaos without mods is just a chore, so until they get reworked I'm not playing vanilla chaos again.

Ah the scary Chaos hoards.....They just tuned up in my current Ironbrow campaign..Normally never get to see them, Turn 125 they show up, I am clloecting my last Rune, so cleaning up clan moulder, Thorgim is doing a green skin rampage conquring half the map, He has 7 full stacks covering where Chaos spawns not forgetting riekland with as many close by. Chaos last only 2 turns of the game LOL. Weierdest campaign I have ever had with dwarfs, Eshin dead by turn 20, Imrik going strong, I wiped Clan mors on turn 9, Only skaven left was Moulder and spittle by turn 30, Hag grief was based in the Isles of the bad lands as they had lost all their home bases by turn 40.....never seen game play out like this before....

Just imagine, a single caster in the brettonian army. Chain Lightning, Thunder Bolt & Comet into that little party... gnnnnn you thought Archaon did well hmm? Even Life & Beasts magic... Awakening of Woods + Dwellers below into that blob. Beasts caster: well... that'd still be the entire army under flock of doom, armor or not. Maybe the bombardment of stone bound spell for good measure. Best use of a hero caster ever. I also think just how meme-worthy it would have been, if noble brettonians could have borrowed a single Skaven doom rocket. For flavour. Call it the holy warpstone grenade. vs Dwarves this would have truly been a disaster; maybe you'd still get the artillery... But burning head vs dawi armor is not so great, plus magic resistance; and then that little clump would look real nice to any flamethrower infantry, armor or not. Not to mention the AP dmg on the thunderers missile dmg etc. (oh, and the army wasn't 'full' of melee infantry. There was a hero, and 2 missile cav :p )

I haven't played WoC in TWW2, however, in TWW1, just rush Shaggoths and that's it. I should probably give it a try in TWW2 but I expect it to be the same. Shaggoths are probably one of the strongest (maybe the strongest) possible doomstack you can have. You really don't want anything else than that and if horde works the same in TWW2 as it did in TWW1, then just get the lightning grounds and get an easy victory.

I had a disaster battle as Thorgrim yesterday against a full stack of savage orcs led by wurzag. I corner camped as it was the only way to survive and the AI just surrounded me but never got into melee. It was really weird. They charged repeatedly but every time they were a hair away they would just turn around and go back. Good for me though as my quarrellers could shoot constantly.

Fireball is such a shit spell... always hits me for like 300 (none-regenerating character) but whenever I cast it there's always either a miss, friendly fire or it hits for like 50 hp. I mean it's a bound/free spell but I still think it's winds of magic cost is too high ;)

I'm hoping they sort out the battle meta and bring it back closer to the rock/paper/scissors style dynamic in earlier games. It seems ridiculous that the only meta for difficulties above normal is heros/mages and ranged + arty spam. They also need to fix the cavalry bug where they lose to basic infantry on a counter charge.

@@hallo-mt5tx nah, even if they one shot everything in one hit, they would just be so so at best. They are on foot trying to catch things that flies and gallops while arrows shred the shit out of them from afar, not to mention many of their troops are supposed to be more glass cannon as discussed in the reveals. It's gonna be a shitshow lol.

So how should you construct your armies with choas? 🤔 I play a Chaos campaign atm and run mostly with 50% choosen and 50% sheogoraths and it works fine atm, but is there a better way?

Its a shame if he was just playing on normal then melee infantry spam works out just fine. By turn 50 though, questionable that he didn't have any chosen at least.
