Canada’s island province is filled mysterious locations pregnant with age-old legends which even Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne Shirley would be hard-pressed to improve upon. From haunted coves and mystical ponds to phantom lights and monsters of the deep; from chilling tales shared around the hearths of Scottish and Irish farmers to ancient traditions orated by the flickering light of Acadian and Mi’kmaq campfires; here are a few of the many colourful legends of Prince Edward Island.

Brilliant Doc!! I have been looking forward to this video since watching your sneak peak the other day. My Acadian ancestors; besides the migmaw natives of course, were the first settlers on Ile St Jean circa 1720. Michel Hache dit Gallant and Anne Cormier. They moved their whole family from Beaubasin (Amhurst, N.S.) to Port Lajoye, Ile St Jean, modern day Rocky Point, PEI. There is a monument at Rocky Point dedicated to my ancestors Michel and Anne in honor of their founding. Not unlike most Maritimers' I love the island, for us it holds a very special place in all our hearts. But as an Acadian Maritimer', descending from the Hache Gallant line, there is an even deeper love of P.E. Island. An unbreakable familiar connection that keeps me wanting to go back time and time again. I'm from the Ile of Cape Breton and like PEI it too has a trove of folklore, legend and enchanting tales. One example, Our Gale, Acadian, and Migmaw ancestors passed down throughout the generations stories that told of the 'little people', 'changelings or the fay they are dwellers of the mossy woodland and the tales are endless. There are stories of Sea monsters, enchanted forest groves supernatural portals to the beyond and the countless tales of ghost ships and haunted lighthouses. Please consider doing something on Cape Breton. I promise you, you won't be disappointed and you won't be hard up for documented stories and legends of Cape Breton. Thanks so much for this, some of these I've heard before but some I've never heard tell of. As an "Oilander" lol born and raised it's fantastic to hear these tales. I did see the burning ship off of Borden one fall evening. Scared the bejeesus out of me and my friend as we sat on the bank. We were around 12 or so and yaking like a couple of banshees when it came into view. We both shut up real quick and just stared at it. Not sure which of us spoke first "do you??" .... "Yup, let's not talk about this again". Figured we'd be called crazy and teased for the rest of our lives.

What great stories! I'm taking my teenage kids (I wish the whole family was going but at least I will get some of the fam unplugged for a bit) deep into the Boundary Waters for a last trip before school starts. These stories are going to be great for the drive to the launch site. They are interesting and thought provoking but not to scary for sleeping in the woods. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these videos. They will definitely put us into the mood for traveling into a wilderness with such rich legends!

Very well done. I believe there is a kernel of truth in these old tales. Sad that our contemporary folk discount them. By doing so many sometimes imply that our ancestors were liars . This I find very offensive. The fact a tale has been told and retold over many generations lends strength to its credibility. It does not undermine it as our modern skeptics seem to infer. Glooscap is Henry Sinclair, also known as prince zimchi. After the little ice age the descendents of the vikings (knights templar) came back to the new world , they openly brag about it on the British Columbia freemasonry website.

The Ghost of the Burning Ship story, triggered a memory of when i was a small child of 6yrs old. My mother spotted the ship sailing and burning coming into the Georgetown harbour, in Prince Edward IslandShe called all us kids, 6 of us, to the window and we all watched it .As it burned , i could see the sails on fire and shadows of people jumping into the water. It burned right down to just fire on top of the water and then it disappeared. I had no idea it was seen off pictou island and murray river until now. The year i seen it , was 1965. Odd that no one else in my area documented it.

I don’t mean to discredit you and I like you’re materiel very much but I was alway told by my grandpa and dad and the history that I Read about the Portuguese explorations of North America in fact there are rocks in Massachusetts and Rhode Island that are carved by two Portuguese brothers .

Probably Gaspar and Miguel Corte-Real. I think there's supposed to be some controversy as to whether or not they actually reached North America, which is why I used the words "known to have set eyes" in reference to Cabot and his men. Some people also believe that Basque fishermen came to Atlantic Canada decades before Cabot.

@@HammersonPeters they were the first European fisherman to fish cod that was That was talk to us and it’s written in all the Portuguese history books along with the curtreal brothers they came from the Island of Tercaira in the Azores.I can tell you some. Easy story’s about my great grandpa on my dad’s side he was a real sea dog but that’s for a mother time young man keep up the good work looking forward to the next story.
