"When he was a boy, I thought Tristan would never live to be an old man. I was wrong about that. I was wrong about many things. It was those who loved him most who died young. He was a rock they broke themselves against, however much he tried to protect them. But he had his honor, and a long life, and he watched his children grow, and raise families of their own. Tristan died in 1963, under the moon of the popping tree. He was last seen in the north country, where the hunting was still good. His grave is unmarked, but it does not matter. He had always lived in the borderlands anyway, somewhere between this world, and the other. It was a good death." Pure poetry!

Isabella II as a child chasing after Tristan as he rode off on his healing journey, then stopping to watch him until he was out of sight, was a great scene for me. Totally unexpected how she suddenly ran into frame. It was so sad. I knew then she was going to end up with Tristan. She didn't feel she was taking Tristan from anyone, he was always hers.

Yes, he was always hers Isabella II's, time just had to happen. She truly loved him, Suzannah was infatuated with him. This is one of my all time favorite movies and it rips me apart every single time I watch it. When my oldest daughter was in high school, sometimes she would look at me and say, "Mom, it feels like a" Legends of The Fall" kinda day". Such beautiful memories involving this fantastic, beautiful yet heartbreaking movie. And btw girls, you are the 1st reactors I've ever seen react to this movie and I couldn't click on it fast enough. I'm so glad you beautiful ladies came up in my recommendations. New sub here! 🩷🤗🩷

I've always felt that Susanna was infatuated with Tristan, not actually in love with him. She seemed so obsessed with the fantasy of the two of them being a couple that she couldn't really comfort him during his grieve over Samuel. I don't think Tristan was ever in love with Susanna. I think he had love for Susanna because of her connection to Samuel. I think Isabel Two was a better match for him. She knew how to read people. Alfred's unrequited love struggle is the most relatable. I think Alfred was more upset that Susanna reciprocated Tristan's affection, than their betrayal of Samuel.

I never felt Tristan was in love with Susanna. I do not think he ever would have been, even if she had waited. They just too different. It likely would have ended up just like the Colonel and Isabella. Ill-matched but fond of each other. Yet without the children to act as a glue. Whereas Izzy was in tune with Tristan her whole life. Likely due her being half native American and Tristan was tutored by One Stab. I think Izzy told Susanna that she was going to marry Tristan because she knew how Susanna felt about Tristan and was warning Susanna off. And to lay her claim. I think everyone was very pleased Tristan and Izzy ended up together. Except for Albert and Susanna. I think Susanna was in love with the idea of Tristan and in lust with his masculinity. Albert was in love at first sight. He was lovestruck. Don't want to use the word, simp, but well...

I found Alfred incredibly attractive, with a steady head on his shoulders. He was the first to decide to go look after Samuel. Tristan did it after susanna asked him to, although I believe Tristan would have done it anyway. I even admire his fierce attitude in making a change in government. Despite his father's views, he stood up for his beliefs and carved his own path. My only two faults with him were pining after a woman he knew didn't love him back (maybe it was due to low self-worth) and not getting out of government sooner after they killed Isabel 2.

I always assumed that Susannah was infertile. I don’t think she would’ve killed herself if she had been able to have kids with Alfred. Yes, she was sad that she couldn’t be with Tristan, but I think not being able to have kids on top of that was the last straw for her.

“Not what I thought it would be/I was naive” Disillusionment was a HUGE thing in WWI A lot of soldiers were literal teenage boys, filled with a sense of duty and almost a romantic view of defending their country. They likely HADN’T seen a war before.. but even if they had, WWI was the first conflict that utilized military innovation like flamethrowers, heavy artillery including shrapnel, and fighter planes. I cannot begin to imagine seeing those things that had been nonexistent. Life in trenches was a step above hell. The were cold, rat infested, and dank. In fact moisture was such an issue that they would develop a condition called trench foot - skin breakdown and infections from being wet all the time. This is Europe so sometimes it also got cold enough to cause frostbite. Living in trenches was bad, but emerging from them was WORSE. The face was the first body part to be unprotected, which caused UNIMAGINABLE facial wounds. I’m talking about huge chunks of the face being blown OFF - and often times the victims survived. And then they Allied soldiers would have noticed that the Central Powers soldiers were ALSO very young men, and vice versa. And if allllll that weren’t enough-traumatized soldiers were COURT MARTIALED for desertion and cowardice. Forget no treatment for PTSD… THEY PUNISHED IT AS A CRIME. Interesting fact: modern reconstructive surgery was born of the need to give these guys their lives back. The surgeon who created the techniques operated on over *11,000* men by 1918!! FUN fact: the surgeon who created the techniques ALSO pioneered bottom surgery for transgender people.
