Alfred followed all the rules... Everyone still loved Tristan more. As a big brother you are used to everyone looks up to you and your father and mother sees you as number 1. Alfred didn't get that attention, but what he finally understood was that he didn't need that attention as Tristan did. So in the end he showed up as the big brother he had always been. Respect Alfred! Tristans children couldn't get a better "father" to watch over them.

Alfred and Samuel represented what LudLow hated and tried to get away from. Conformists with idealistic and naive ideologies. Thinking the government was good and that it's glorious to fight as a soldier without truly realizing the cost of war. Ludlow believed in fighting to protect oneself, not to unnecessarily label a group an enemy so you can do your corrupt bidding. Alfred and Samuel were soldiers blindly fighting, and more times it was for corrupt people. Ludlow tried to teach his sons, even moving far away from the madness, but they still turned out idealistic. Alfred got it in the end though(killing the one man who was going to kill his father and brother). They are not your friends. They are untrustworthy. Life isn't the fairytale of the good guys winning. It's all corruption and those who'll get eaten up. Tristan, from his birth on(almost killing his mother during delivery) up til this death was a rebel. Tristan, is what he raised his kids to be. Then again, people simply take to people. Any parent knows, from a child is young who their favorite is on personality. Now, you can have your favorite but shouldn't play favorites. Tristan and Alfreds rivalry, which shattered the family, had just as much to do with Ludlows favortism as it did Susannah...if not more. It started the feeling that he'd never win over Tristan no matter how hard he tried. Susannah just came along and *cemented* it.

+flor de primavera, Colonel Ludlow was a cavalry officer, and he had seen the underhanded tactics that the American government had used to control, massacre, and control the Indian people. He determined, rightly so, that the United States Congress and the various U.S. agencies had enriched themselves on the money and lands that were supposedly given to the Indian people in the various Indian treaties. He had seen that the government underhandedness started in those who pushed and bribed the law-making bodies into the illegal activities, and the riches and power that went down the various chains-of-command. He was sick that Alfred had chosen to get involved in that mess even though Alfred apparently tried to stand apart from the crime and corruption.

Tears me up every time. Nothing better than family being brought together around killing those who mean them harm. Bullets & Love, great combo.

One of the greatest movies of all times. I can see my father and grandfather doing this for real, along with my uncles.

Superbly acted - I draw parallels in my life. They don’t make them like this anymore.

The fact that the officer has everyone with their hands up but doesn't even have that gun ready to fire bugs the shit out of me.

Wotan's Wolf I couldn’t agree more. That’s bugged me since I saw this in the theater. He’s there with the other two to perform an execution and his sub machine gun isn’t cocked. He lost precious seconds cocking it and lost his life in the process. You’d think anyone would have cocked it the second they stepped out of the car.

This is why the "SIR" precludes the Anthony Hopkins! My favorite actor. He has made really bad movies good despite the efforts of the director(s) to make it horrible.
