The really fascinating part about this chapter is Monkey’s character growth. Here, he’s clearly much more cautious and thinks things through. He’s the one who suggests using cunning to get out of the kingdom rather than fighting their way out, and rather than using his usual M.O. of kicking down the door first and asking questions later, he scouts things out before formulating a plan (it doesn’t last too long before he jumps in to save Tripitaka’s purity, but the fact remains he showed a lot more caution than he would have at the beginning). It makes sense, too, since like Red said in Part IV, he’s meant to be an allegory for the human mind on the road to enlightenment. It makes SENSE that as the journey progresses he’d mellow out and stop trying to brute-force everything, coming to see the value in alternate courses of action. This is a really freaking good book.

The Empress character is quite overlooked here, this is seen as the hardest challenge for Tripitaka because she loves him purely. Love is considered one of the greatest taboo in Buddhism because it is the hardest thing to overcome to reach enlightenment. It is mentioned that in their previous lives, they fell in love but couldn't be together, so they promised to meet in the next life. They finally met again in this life, but one is an Empress and one is a Buddhist. Once again faith separated them. When being with the Empress, Tripitaka didn't dislike it, he even enjoyed the time with her, walking in gardens, drawing and doing poetry. The Empress is basically *THE ONE* for him, his feeling was swayed and he had to constantly meditate. Tripitaka had been trying to not look directly at the Empress since the beginning (a way to control himself I guess). One night, the Empress decided to meet him privately, she told him about her thoughts of meeting him in the previous life and that's why she wants to be with him in this life. Tripitaka finally looked at her face, and he was "shocked" (there is no explanation about his reaction, some say because the empress is so beautiful, or it reminded him about his previous life with her). He was at the verge of crossing the line, that was when the demon suddenly appeared and kidnapped him. It is also a serious taboo for a buddhist to lie. Tripitaka only lied twice in his life, one was when he told Sun Wukong to put on the head band (this is acceptable). And when he was leaving the Women's Kingdom, during the farewell, the Empress asked him: "Will we meet again in the next life?...". Tripitaka didn't say anything, he just slightly nodded and left. The Empress looked at him leaving with teary eyes, because they know it was a lie... they can never be together, that is their faith.

@Abbas Alqattan He is the Golden Cicada, and because Red didn't tell the entire story of his life before the journey it cause your confusion (which is reasonable as Tripitaka's "Story of my life" is long AF). Long story short, Tripitaka was the Golden Cicada and one of Buddha's disciples. Due to falling asleep during sutra lectures and dropping a grain of rice, he was sentenced to earthly exile for 10 lives and had to go through 81 tribulations (AKA the Journey to the West). During his first nine lives, he got eaten by evil Sandy when trying to cross the evil river, that means he and the Empress probably met on his ninth live but failed to be together because he died midlife. Tragic.

Today I learned: The women ruled kingdom in the novel was inspired by an actual kingdom in real life Tripitaka's journal records. He was told about it while traveling acrross India. The kingdom was believed to be south west of Persia, southern coast of Black Sea. And what mythical kingdom was also from the aproximate location? The Amazon. Yeah that was the whereabout of the Amazonian and their capital Themyscira. Fascinating. However, Tripitaka only heard about it, not actually visited, so the kingdom still remains a myth. But to think that we could have a Wukong vs Wonder Woman is crazy.

I thought it drew inspiration from an actual civilization in China. Let me explain: Apparently there is a village somewhere in China where women do all the work and men are just there "breed". They do everything that would be considered 'traditionally manly stuff. There are videos on KZbin about it. They even have a river by them as well....That's just where I thought the women empire came...... I theorized that, since in folklore/mythology seems to be based on something real or explain the unexplainable, or their just lessons about moral and what not....

Are you talking about the Mosuo people? Because I thought they were the inspiration for the Kingdom of Women, and they’re 100% real and definitely not there. The Mosuo are sometimes referred to as the “Kingdom of Women” because most Mosuo trace their lineage through their mother’s line and elder women are the heads of their households, and because Mosuo women in general have a lot more influence than women in the rest of China traditionally do.

From the book: Sanzang went pale with shock at the news. "What am I to do, disciple?" he asked. "I'm going to have a child, but I'm a man," said Pig, writhing around in his agony. "Where will the child come out? How am I to give birth to it?" "As the old saying goes, a melon falls when it's ripe," replied Monkey with a laugh. "When the time comes a hole will open under your ribs for it to be born through." This conversation made Pig shake with fear, and the pain was more than he could bear. "I can't take any more," he said, "I can't take any more. I'm dying, I'm dying." "Stop fidgeting, brother," said Friar Sand with a grin, "stop fidgeting or else you'll get the umbilical cord in a twist and be ill before the birth." The idiot's panic was now worse than ever as with tears in his eyes he held on to Monkey and said, "Brother, ask the old lady where there are midwives with a gentle touch and send for some. The pains are coming very close to each other now. They must be labor pains. It'll be very soon now." "If they're labor pains, brother, you'd better stop writhing about if you don't want your waters to break," said Friar Sand, still grinning.

I just realized the reason that Monkey tends to have more trouble with his opponents post-mountain: he's holding back. Old Monkey had zero qualms about collateral damage so long as it wasn't his own people getting hurt, but now he's a Buddhist, and therefore has to take it easy. Hence, he can't just god-mode his way out of every situation because it'll obliterate everything in a five hundred-li radius.

Going through these is making it shockingly apparent that, despite Monkey being the template for all shonen protagonists ever, Monkey is incredibly smart. Yes, he's brash and makes poor decisions, but he's not an idiot--he knows when he's in over his head, knows who he can turn to for help, and honestly comes up with some incredible plans to get himself and his friends out of trouble. He's also incredibly observant--mostly because of his godly eyes, but even so, he's surprising perceptive and has good insight regarding possible dangers. More often than not, Pigsy is the one being a total dumbass, and Monkey is the one having to whip him into shape. Yet somehow, all modern shonen protagonists have all of Monkey's strengths, and all of Pigsy's weaknesses, like they're a weird unbalanced DBZ Fusion.

+Zack Weber That's because Shonen Protagonists draw a lot more to Dragon Ball's Son Goku than Wukong/Goku from Japanese Translations (aka Saiyuki) of the Novel. One good comparison is Saiyuki 1960 & Boku no Son Goku from 2003. They're both on KZbin with Eng Subs, so I recommend watching both to see what I mean. But in a nutshell, Son Goku in both movies are mostly what you described Wukong. Brash, arrogant & makes poor decisions. BUT they're observant, good insight on danger, & have good plans to get out of trouble. Compare to that Kazuya Minekura's take on the Monkey King (which came 13 years after Dragon Ball), which while is kinda closer to the novel in a few ways, you can TELL Minekura took decent influence on Toriyama's Goku. Even in design to an extent...

For everyone wondering why everyone is evenly matched for monkey, look at how much humanity has progressed in 500 years. Wukong has been stuck under a mountain for half a millennia, and while he was being crushed and having his muscles atrophy, everyone else had been advancing and growing in power. Sure, it's sort of plot convenience to say "hurr durr scaling enemies," but it makes sense. Time waits for no one. Also, he's also bound by rules now. You're weaker with rules. For example, I used to work as security at a hospital. What I've come to realize is it's much harder to solve an issue with restraint than to go all out. There's a meth addict causing trouble, and you're a 250-pound security guard, Sure, you can beat the shit out of him, but you'd not only get fired, but you're also at a hospital and your job is to help, not hurt, so you have to restrain him in the most politically correct way possible. If you know anything about wresting, you'd know that restraints hurt as well and can be just as lethal, so you have to go out of your way to restrain him in a "proper," ie safe manner that won't get your boss sued. What was once a simple ass kicking job now becomes an arduous task of restraining the subject as gingerly as possible without tearing up the hospital or anyone who'd get caught in the crossfire. You might not even be able to accomplish this task without help. Rules severely limit your power, but that's just the way it is. You could just physically nuke the enemy and throw him through a glass door to assert your dominance, but that's not what good guys do, and are you really prepared for the consequences? Now take that and multiply it by a thousand. You're a god level monkey fighting god level demons, and you have the most frail, gullible, idiot of a monk in an escort mission that makes Natalya from goldeneye 007 seem like a cakewalk. Tell me how easy that'd be for you.

@cyrilhendrix76142 жыл бұрын
I've been reading the book, but despite the rules he's supposed to be saddled with I notice that he kills people pretty nonchalantly every now and then in the story, so I can't quite believe that he's always holding back, not to avoid killing at least. Although the bit about collateral damage does make sense, there's also the fact that he's genuinely harmed a few times, like with the Yellow Wind demon making him blind for a while and the Red Boy actually burning him a bit. And, y'know, the scorpion demoness in this video who makes him feel pain with her poison, which admittedly is also mentioned to have given pain to the Buddha as well so they acknowledge that she's pretty powerful at least. Personally I think that yes, there are plenty of demons in the world as dangerous as Sun Wukong, even if not through raw power like he throws around all the time. He's not only absurdly strong, able to swing around a stick several metric tons heavy like nothing, but also significantly tougher than he is strong, not to mention his 72 Transformations that let him make loads of clones of himself for if he's outnumbered. However, Wukong had spent some 300 years mucking about before he got into trouble with Heaven and the escalating violence that ensued, so before he got sealed under a mountain, Sun Wukong was, in fact, one of the random demons that happen to be wildly dangerous that seem to show up out of nowhere, from the perspective of everyone else. Maybe if one of those other demons had been provoked to the same extent they'd be just as infamous for their power as Wukong. So maybe Wukong is noteworthy first and foremost because he actually went and rampaged in Heaven, while most demons on his level don't, and for good reason given how that ended up for the monkey. There is the question of what the hell the bodhisattvas that could restrain Wukong later in the story were doing while he was rampaging in Heaven, which I don't think can be explained by him being restrained by the rules of being a buddhist, but from what I recall the Jade Emperor jumped straight to asking for the Buddha instead of asking for bodhisattvas first, so maybe the Jade Emperor overreacting is the reason for that. So yeah, while I kinda agree with the collateral damage bit, I don't think Wukong cares as much about the rules as you imply, but there's still other possible explanations for the seeming powercreep.
@ALee-if6ld2 жыл бұрын
@@cyrilhendrix7614 He doesn't always care about limiting himself, just like how any human pushed beyond the edge would eventually say "fuck it," and start fighting back for real. He was careless about taking life at first, but over time learned the value of life, and learned to control his strength more. This guy laid havoc to heaven. He has to be very careful about use of force sometimes. He could easily kill someone by accident. Like a boxer or fighter who could accidentally hit too hard, which has happened and resulted in loss of life, only multiplied a thousandfold.
@hxx3784 ай бұрын
@@cyrilhendrix7614 Whether the Monkey King would kill someone depends on whether the creature has any significant backing. If it's just a trivial monster, he would casually kill it. However, if the creature has backing or support, Wukong would try to uncover who is behind it and then demand that those forces handle the situation. In reality, Wukong's swimming skills aren't bad at all; otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to obtain his weapon (he only fears things like smoke irritating his eyes, strong winds, or laotzu's divine weapons). He's simply more cautious now and shows greater respect for the rules.

@@kennyg1082 i been reading a bit about the Journey to the West recently, and while I am be incorrect, I hace noticed two things. 1. Wukong in his early years very much acted like the demons he fights here. Even when his army got defeated he started to be worried and ran away i stead before getting captured. 2. He and other characters seem to be as powerful as plot demands it for them to be. Even the gods, with Wukong strong enought to try and pick a fight with buddah, but unable to beat Jade Emperor or demons he has to fight in his journey. Also, Red Son/son of demon bull king managed to hurt him and he almost drowned, while officially being immortal like 6 times now and already dying once (being taken by spirits to underworld is technically dying, he only escaped later like Hercules or Sisiphus). After a time it really stops feeling a mythology and more like fantasy/dnd adventure book. There even was evil Clone of Wukong and nobody could tell who was the evil one and who the less evil one. Edit. And btw. There was even a fanservice chapter where the gang was in the all women country and monk was captured by a Scorpion demon that was so strong even buddah was said to fear it since it stung him once. So ifthe scorpion demon was strong enought to make Buddah weary of it, and Buddah absolutely stomped Monkey king, should scorption be able to stomp him too?

Monkey's development from a rambunctious bandit into a properly heroic character is a really pleasant but steady journey. So some trivia from a Chinese: 1. The scorpion demoness is probably one of the most powerful characters in JTTW 'verse. Guan Yin confirms that "I cannot beat her", and she is also *_THE ONLY CONFIRMED CHARACTER ABLE TO HURT BUDDHA_*. Holy hell if that isn't powerful. 2. If she is so powerful how was she defeated by a chicken? So the thing is, Ancient Chinese taxonomy puts scorpions under the category of "poisonous bug"......and the natural enemy of poisonous bugs as the chicken. So yeah magic chicken to trump magic scorpion. Also poisonous bugs are considered Yin, and Star Lord Mao is very Yang. Yang trumps Yin. 3. Spoiler: the chicken will show up later. 4. Spoiler: this is not the first time someone tries forcing Tripitaka into banging. Spoiler: they fail. 5. Also not sure if Red intended this, but the part at 12:47 "Let's just say it's a good thing you guys didn't bang". Female scorpions sometimes kill the male during/after mating. Yeah Tripitaka dodged a bullet there.

Sun Wukong is my all time favorite fictional and mythological figure. I grew up with the Chinese classic Journey to The West 1986 show. Everything about him and his story is amazing! I’m glad you guys have made a whole series to summarize his story! I love looking into Sun Wukong lore and how he’s made such a big impact on the general media. He inspired Shounen anime/manga troupes and abilities, such as Dragon Ball’s Son Goku with his power pole and nimbus, Luffy’s silly yet headstrong personality, and Naruto’s shadow clone jutsu. The most well known being Son Goku, who was heavily inspired by him. From Goku’s saiyan/ape side, to his urge to fight strong opponents, he still has some aspects/influence from Sun Wukong that remains. His name, Son Goku, is literally just the Japanese translation of Sun Wukong, and the general story, or more specifically characters, was meant to somewhat resemble or reflect The Journey To The West, just like how Oolong closely resembles Pigsy and how Tien has a third eye like Erleng. Dragon Ball went to inspire a lot of future animes and is seen to be one of the most influential animes of all time due to that. I’m glad to see how Sun Wukong technically made a pretty decent mark on today’s anime culture and community, but most people don’t even know that or don’t even know who he is in general. Recently it seems that he’s become more popular, even in the West. I think your channel: Overly Sarcastic Productions, and your video series retelling/summarizing Journey To The West and Sun Wukong really got people talking about him. In general he’s become way more relevant than before. ================================= I would like to list all the recent things that he’s been included in!: There’s the new game coming out called Black Myth: Wukong, the Lego animated series called Lego Monkie Kid, the second season of Lego Monkie Kid coming soon, God of Highschool’s Jin Mori is a version of Sun Wukong, Death Battle’s recent video with Sun Wukong vs. Hercules, DC releasing a new superhero based on Sun Wukong/the monkey king called The Monkey Prince, Smash Legends released Wukong as a new legend, a game called Black Desert has a new upcoming character/class called Wukong with his abilities, the short fan animation film called Legend: A Dragon Ball Tale has Goku transforming into a super saiyan that reflects Sun Wukong and is referred to as “the savior of heaven,” and the year of the monkey is coming in 2028. I’m hoping Brawl Stars creates a character or at least a skin or pin that’s related to Sun Wukong! He’s just everywhere now, and I think your channel had a big part in all of that. ================================= I love seeing people being introduced and more interested in Sun Wukong. It’s good to see that he truly lives up to the tales of him gaining multiple immortalities, as it seems his tale and legend never truly dies and sometimes spikes in popularity. I learned a lot from your Journey to The West series. Your story telling style is so unique and entertaining, and your drawings/animatics are so cool! The quality of these videos are like gold! It must take a lot to make these videos, so you deserve to take breaks and take as much time as you need. I’m willing to wait for however long it takes because it’s completely worth it! Thank you for giving me more insight on him! I appreciate everything you guys do! _______________________________________ Sun Wukong is my all time favorite fictional and mythological figure. The Sun Wukong skin is actually the Six Eared Macaque and has a cool detail to distinguish it. The cloning ability for the character is changed to where a monkey pops out and transforms into a clone of one of the other main characters. • The year of the monkey is coming in 2028. _____________________________________ [Edit]: I’m just going to keep updating the list of Sun Wukong being featured or referenced in things or just being more relevant in general. It will be listed inside the box that has equal signs boxing it in. I’m glad to see that his popularity is still growing even past the initial point of when I made this comment! I just want to put it into perspective of how much your videos have impacted Sun Wukong’s popularity and how awesome that is. I am truly thankful for all that you do and have done! ------------------------ [Edit]: I’ve changed the list into a bulleted list so it’s easier to see each individual thing. I also added new things to the list and taken some input from the replies of this comment.

There is a cool pixelated game called Soul Knight that I like to play. There is a Spring Festival seasonal event, and you can unlock or buy character skins based on Journey To The West characters! The Sun Wukong skin for Assassin is actually the Six Eared Macaque, and the Assassin’s clone skill shows a little monkey popping out and then transforming into a clone of the one of the other main characters, like Pigsy or the Tang monk. It’s a dream come true!

According to Chinese lore, roosters are natural enemies to scorpions, which is why 卯日星官 returned into his original form of a rooster and defeated the scorpion demoness... Side note, the story I heard paints the pipa scorpion demoness in a more favourable light... she (in her giant scorpion form) was listening to the buddha reciting scriptures, but the buddha brushed her aside which caused her to sting the buddha.. the buddha then instructed his followers to bring her to him (unsure if it is to punish her or to reconcile with her) but she fled and he couldn't find her... fast forward an unknown amount of years later and we have this story in the journey to the west.

Chicken Mao, what's the matter with you? You don't act like the other chickens do. You wear a disguise to look like Star Lord guys, but you're not a man, you're a Chicken Mao.

@@MrKyltpzyxm Well, his mom (毗蓝婆) is a hen (or Phoenix depending on which legend you are following). (In Cantonese, a chicken is euphemism for prostitutes) so that might explain why he don't usually take his Rooster form... p/s you might hear of the mom later... she helped in defeating the hundred-eyed demon (a centipede demon)

I find it interesting that all the replies to this comment are about Chinese chicken folklore, and none are about how a scorpion was convinced that the Buddha himself personally hated her and kinda rebuilds her entire identity around that. I'm imagining her acting all proud about it, but inside she's sad because she just wanted to be closer to him, but thanks to her inherent nature that she was born with it went horribly wrong and now she'll never know how to be more than a mere demon that everyone hates on principle.

Paying the boatlady is a necessity because she's nice and didn't trick the group for anything The Immortal making a paywall on ladies to pay or take responsibility for wanting a baby...yeah Monkey isn't paying anything for that, especially when Tripataka and Pigsy didn't even want the babies.
