From 1619 to today these hymns brought my ancestors through many a storm and that train is still running today. ❤❤❤

Today she came in to get her nails done; thru our conversation I found out she was a great singer in her younger years. I found out this video and showing her . She was so happy to see it. She is now 84

This is the song Ray sang at Sam Cooke's funeral. Those who were there said it was one of the most spellbinding, emotionally devastating gospel performances they ever saw; even Ray remembered it as one of his finest. Tragic that somehow it couldn't have been recorded.

I too heard that Ray Charles sang this song at Sam Cookes funeral. And if his performance was anything like this one, it must have been -- as you so aptly put it "a spellbinding, emotionally devastating performance." Tragic indeed that Sam Cookes funeral was not recorded, or if it was, that it has not been made available to the public.
@garyjones42455 жыл бұрын
YES!!!! Apparently at least part of it was recorded. They played a short clip of it on the PBS American Masters episode on Sam Cooke called "Crossing Over". It takes geniuses like Ray Charles to create something so beautiful & moving out of pure anguish.

David Whiteis imagine it was only 15 years prior to this 1979 performance 💔 I heard Sarah broke down in tears so she wasn’t able to sing it for Sam at his funeral. That’s the reason Ray Charles sang it.
@firej5 жыл бұрын
@@marinassen3559 It was gospel singer Bessie Griffin who was set to perform, not Sarah. That's when Mr. Charles stepped in.

At the Sam Cooke funerals, Ray was there and somoene screamed "Brother Ray is in the house! Brother Ray is in the house!", so it wasn't planned but he sat at the piano, said "Sam Baby, this one's for you" and sang this song. There was not one dry eye in the all house, not even his...

That is a great recall for us. Do you have a clip or can you let me know where I can learn more about that occasion? I am a huge sam cooke and ray charles fan.
@jazzmanchgo2 жыл бұрын
@@DwayneGolden It was never recorded, unfortunately. In those days, it was very rare for an event like a funeral -- even the funeral of someone as important as Sam Cooke -- to be documented on tape. Today, of course, it's the opposite -- We record everything, even a lot of things that don't deserve it!

This is one of the most incredible music performances i have ever seen. Have for years been a huge fan of Ray Charles, his tuning , phrasing, how he uses is body when he sings and how beautiful it sounds, his overall instrumental capacity on the piano is unparalleled in my opinion, this guy is the musical genius of the 1900's. Sarah Jordan Powell is a new experience for me and she just blow me away with her voicing of this song, absolutely stunning stuff
