Between 1970 and 1974, the headmaster of my school in Heanor Derbyshire.(Monday st junior) would take us to Litton every year. We walked through the tunnel a couple of times, no lightning in those days. I remember making plaster casts of animal footprints alongside the river. Some of my happiest childhood memories. Thank you Mr Otterwell Rip.

Thanks for commenting! Yes, it's a great scenic hike and I was pleased to be back again! Yes, Litton and its sadly historic Cotton Mill! When I got home I researched its terrible crimes to the orphans who were employed/forced to work there. Having read the book 'The real Oliver Twist' by John Waller featuring the life of Robert Blincoe in the 19th Century. I feel compelled to go back to Litton and film again a documentary of what happened there, hopefully this year! Were you as school kids told about the mills history? Cheers👍

@NigelHarperPhoto Thanks for the reply Nigel. He must have told us some of the history about the mill because I knew that children worked in terrible conditions there. Some probably tricked into going there. "You'll be able to live in the countryside and catch rabbits, better than living here eh" A return visit about the mill will very interesting.

A trip down memory lane. (Two weeks ago, July'23.) We jumped on the trail near Great Longstone and walked to the end of the trail at Wyedale car park. Like you, we enjoyed the scenery, tunnels, and geology along the way. Assuming the bus stop on the A6 would return us to the start (Bakewell). For the last mile or so after the Lime Kilns, we had no phone signal. We missed the bus to Litton by 4 minutes (No where near Gt. Longstone,). We waited in case it was late for 20 mins. (Next bus 2 hours). 4:45pm No footpath on A6, quarry lorries zooming past - still no signal! Faced only with a walk back along the trail, ;-( ... As we crossed back along the car park a lovely couple said they would give us a lift... Should they read this, we were so grateful! Best advice if on foot, - Start at the Wyedale end and head to Bakewell, at least you will have the opportunity to call a taxi back to base. Other than this a superb walk, bike ride etc... Enjoy!

@@astromanian_UK Yes, a shame buses don't stop near the carpark at Wye dale! And I did look to see if anyone was going to Bakewell at the carpark, but no luck! When my wife and I walked it a few years back we took the bus into Buxton. Then after a couple of hours there it was easy to get one back to Bakewell. Still it was a FAB day out. Cheers!👍
