tfw Varus won't give you back your Legions
"The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, described as the Varian Disaster (Clades Variana) by Roman historians, took place at modern Kalkriese in 9 AD, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed Roman legions and their auxiliaries, led by Publius Quinctilius Varus. The alliance was led by Arminius, a Germanic officer of Varus's auxilia. Arminius had acquired Roman citizenship and had received a Roman military education, which enabled him to deceive the Roman commander methodically and anticipate the Roman army's tactical responses."

@@ironduke5058 Arminius was a German taken as a hostage and trained by the legions. He never got converted, and used his position to fool his commanding general Varus into a trap. They walked right into a barricade, on a bend in the road where they couldn’t see what was going on, in incredibly dense forest/swamplands. 3 legions, more auxiliary cohorts and cav squadrons were annihilated, ~20,000 men. Defeat was near total, with a handful escaping and the lions share sacrificed to the gods, it fkn traumatised the romans so badly Marcus Aurelius was still trying to genocide ‘em 150 years later.

@@thicclegendfeep4050 The Romans had no desire to gain a foothold in Germania afterwords, there was nothing there that they could not get easily elsewhere, that's why they used punitive campaigns, in the aggregate the campaign there was a massive success. It's actually better than that, this seems like it is from the first of a long series of ambushes where ranged attacks caused massive casualties. The commanders then asked half of the legionaries to continue marching to the other side of the swamp and set up a defensive position while the other half held the enemy back. This is in the video with the ranged attacks in the beginning then you can hear the Legion continue moving with vigour!
