Few things that are not mentioned in this video, i've watched many other reviews so here's list of what's missing. - Legion 7 uses 'vapor chamber' cooling which is about 5 degrees cooler than 'standard'. - 7's iCUE drains more battery (might've been fixed), has Tobii eye tracking and different speakers. - Nearly all Legions come with cheeped out RAM - holding back fps on CPU based programs/games. So consider buying dual channel rams. - Nearly all Legions come with MUX switch to disable iGPU (free performance boost, but less battery time) - Legions come with overkill power bricks which are bigger and way heavier than notebook needs. Its possible to buy smaller one. - Legion 5 60wh battery can be upgraded to bigger one by sacrificing 2.5 slot. And lastly there shouldn't be any warranty sticker or UV screws...but go double check that to be sure. While trying to open 7 be careful, few useers reported they've bent the covers a ripped few things. For in-depth review i recommend watching few Jarrods vids. I will be be happy if you find this useful and if i spared you some time. 🎮

Great video explaining the differences, wish it came out just a few days earlier. I just got myself the Legion 5 Pro with RTX3070 yesterday. It was a toss up between the Legion 7 and the 5 Pro, but in the end the price difference just didn’t make sense as ultimately the 5 Pro has all the same specs wrt to screen, CPU, GPU, while the Legion 7 offers more RGB and slightly sturdier chassis being all aluminium. I find the Legion 5 Pro is the sweet spot, as it has that QHD+ screen over the standard Legion 5, not to mention the aluminium lid and base making it that much more sturdier.

As long as you don't go for a model with a 3080 these laptops feel like very compact pre-builts that don't cost triple their MSRP due to the graphics card shortage. They really feel like very aceptable solutions if you really don't want to wait until the shortages stop. You may not be able to change the graphics card in 3-5 years, but if you won't be playing at 4k in the near future then the 3000 gen should be able to last you for quite some years I guess and let you play at very high graphics for a good amount of years. The only struggle will be PCVR in probably 5 years, and still these cards should be able to run VR games at low if they end up becoming too graphical complex in the future.

The best thing about the Legion series is that every Legion Laptop this year has a MUX switch to disable the iGPU. So you can get better frame rates with less CPU and iGPU bottleneck than a laptop without a MUX switch that would force you to use an external screen to bypass optimus. The only two (maybe three) negatives for me are the x16 memory (easy enough to fix on the non-slim models, just buy different RAM and install it yourself) a sub-par wi-fi card (again, easy to fix with a spare Intel AX210 for about $20) and lack of user fan control (although there ARE third party tools for that). If they released them back in April, I would have bought one, but I couldn't wait until June/July...
@KylePandapatan3 жыл бұрын
True there! At least those are fixable by the user, unlike other laptop series that skimp on the GPU/CPU wattage, cooling, and fan sound. For a gaming laptop, a MUX is essential enough to be a given (other manufacturers, please copy Lenovo). Given the crazy market the past 2 years, the Legion models are the best deal for the price. They really studied their user-base and built for their needs, (and since gamers have jobs too - it’s even useful for video encoding and office work). The clean business-like design (except for the 5 Pro, a bit controversial there) without the RGB can totally work even in an office setting.

Legion 5 pro comes with a better wifi card(intel one)
@cameronbosch12133 жыл бұрын
@@KylePandapatan Some later units came with x16 memory (with worse timings, which heavily affects Ryzen CPUs) due to the chip shortage and some later units also came with RealTek and MediaTek Wi-Fi cards, which do not work in Linux without modifications and are worse than Intel Wi-Fi cards, however, it's easy enough to replace (Asus also did this with their newer Intel Zephyrus M & S laptops and the later stock of their Strix, Strix Advantage, and Strix Scar laptops). It is just a simple upgrade on the latter, as most gaming laptops do not solder x16 RAM or solder non-Intel or Intel Killer-branded Wi-Fi cards or at least make them replaceable (Killer has been bought out by Intel, so IDK anymore about Killer).

I bought the Legion 5 Pro this year and it has been a fantastic device, and it does not have iCUE! Also I cannot state how great Legion support was, I got mine DOA, and 8 days (6 working days) I had a new one in my hands, man that's the best support from any company I have received.

Mind sharing the details?
@exmortis44043 жыл бұрын
@@ministerquik Of the support? Well the unit arrived with a DOA keyboard lighting, it just flashed like a strobe, was not usable. So 15mins or so on the phone with Legion support had it diagnosed as DOA. 20mins or so on phone with Lenovo sales (I bought direct) and I had a replacement order. 4hrs later I received email with details including a link for status updates and a printable prepaid label for UPS return of my DOA. 8 total days from original arrival I received a new fully functional laptop. Now I live in Canada, so the new unit had to ship to the Canadian Fulfilment center, then to me, but that was like an over night ordeal, so really not bad. Makes sense though, keep all replacements in a central location and ship them to any NA support fulfillment center as and when needed. So when my dad needed a new laptop? Lenovo was the only choice. My only complaint is, I still cannot buy a spare power adapter. However it has been flawless and used it almost every day since June of this year with out issue. To boot the laptop went down in price 40 or days later, called Lenovo sales and about 10 days later received my refund for the difference, and promptly used it to extend my warranty on everything to 3yrs including accidental damage and battery.

I would like to voice my recommendation for the Legion 5 Pro. One key issue with the Legion 5 (non-pro) is that the screen has a lower maximum brightness (250/300 nits vs 500 nits on the pro), which can pose a usability problem. The option to upgrade to a 3070 if you want to is nice.

Mine actually measures at 370 nits with displaycal, which is more than enough for me. It is a bit weird that only the last three brightness settings bump the nits up by a lot. A more gradual control over brightness on the top end would've been more useful I think.

@@lSandmanl I could do that with iCue3, but mine came with the stuck light bug so I had to update to v4. What I did was make a small script that opens and kills iCue on startup, so light is set how I like it. It works, but I should not have to do this with a new laptop😉

I'd love a legion slim 7 but my current device has some life left in it so I'll wait til next year to see if they upgrade the display and/or ports. Also looking at the x1 extreme but I don't wanna go back to intel.
@dijikstra82 жыл бұрын
Yeah the X1 Extreme with an AMD would be ideal. I really don't want to leave the ThinkPad lineup, the keyboard and the Trackpoint are just too good, and I absolutely hate the gamey look and feel of all the gaming laptops, maybe I'm getting old but I never ever cared about RGB. But I also want a dedicated graphics card in a reasonably slim package. I'm looking for a high performing but still portable laptop that can replace both my 470s thinkpad and my old desktop with a GTX960.

If you are shopping around for a new Legion, the best as far as functions is the 2022 Legion 7i. The 2023 Legion 7/7i removed features, like the fingerprint scanner, rgb on the fans, pressure-sensitive wasd, and so much more.

The only AMD gaming laptop with a good 16:10 screen (apart from the Legion 7); the rest of the 16:10 gaming laptops are Intel... Which is better in performance but goes through the laptop's battery like no tomorrow compared to AMD. And the Legion 5 Pro with a RAM change is probably my favorite gaming laptop this year.

The problem with Legion 5 (non-pro) is the screen, less brightness and I would like to have the 16:10 ratio. Imma go with Legion 5 pro even though I have to sacrifice a 'lil bit on the aesthetics department.
@sirRustyiron2 жыл бұрын
you're not really sacrificing on the 'aesthetics' department (coming from legion 5 pro owner). It's a very well-made laptop and everything looks and feels premium, very sturdy but surprisingly light laptop. If you don't like the color options then you can always get cool-looking skins and the legion logo light can be turned off.
@bard80232 жыл бұрын
I only reason i don't prefer pro, is because of its 16:10 ratio, and for gaming it'll add black bars to some games which really annoys me, so non pro version is perfect for me.

I went with the 5 Pro two months ago because I found a good deal for the 5800H/3070 specs (for 1650€), as I felt like I didn't need the 7 and didn't want lights all over the place. It's been amazing so far, and I'm glad I went with it, it seems like a good sweet spot.

@poltergeist____3 жыл бұрын
Not buying a legion 7 bc of the lights is dumb as you can turn them all off pretty easily. you can just put white backlight on the keyboard and it will look like any bussines laptop
@shanilsam3 жыл бұрын
@@maximo1590 thermals are fantastic in my experience. Ryzen had a very high thermal limit , CPU is consistently under 90 under high workloads (70s during gaming). The 3070 in mine never cracks 70 , though it is also undervolted (1755 @ 0.800 mv). I should also add that I use a laptop stand (no fans), which I'd strongly recommend given the Legion laptops in this series have large vents at the bottom to draw air. Ambient temp is around 20-25 celcius here at the moment , so it might get worse in summer. Overall, Lenovo's cooling seems to be doing a great job, not even close to thermal throttling. The inbuilt performance modes work well and there is much fan noise than I expected, even on the high performance mode.

I personally feel plastic is much better compared to anodised aluminium. As a previous owner of Lenovo y50 , i personally hate aluminium. Because after a year or two the joints between the plastic and aluminium will start to fall apart. Aluminium gets damaged pretty badly just with a little bumps here and there.
@vig_Indomitable2 жыл бұрын
@Juri V yeah, on the top of it the aluminium gets round/ground if we accidentally exert higher twisting force while fastening the screws, rendering it unusable. Also as far as my observation goes metals have lubricating properties so in the long run due to the little vibrations from the laptop (due to fan or speakers etc..) the screws tend to come out/un screwed automatically.
