GNs came with power seats, locks, and windows as options. They did not have power mirrors. Some had a remote joystick for the passenger side, located to the right of the steering wheel. A common upgrade is to replace the power master braking system with vacuum boosted brakes. You’ll need the master cylinder, brake booster, and brake pedal to perform the swap. Vacuum leaks are the enemy of these cars and can cause serious engine damage if not addressed. Fire up your smoke tester when you get back home. The fuel pressure was around 22 psi at 36:39. Factory spec is 25-35psi at idle with vac line on and 34-43 KOEO. Correct on the dielectric grease comments at 40:25. Your fuel pump relay has the grey connector plug. Good fuel and resetting your TPS/IAC was my first thought to resolve the issue. Most of us with factory ECMs use a scanmaster to see engine diag numbers while running. Strongly recommend buying one. You can use the Orange wire connected to the positive battery cable as the way to reset the ECM. 1:15:35 you likely need bulbs or a flasher relay. There are two of these in our cars below the steering column. One for hazards and the other for turn sigs. Great video! They are reliable cars, it just takes research and patience.

I have to say I was one of the few, very fortunate people to have a brand new Grand National in 1986 while in college. Drove it every day to school. I believe it was purchased in August of 1986. Mine was a digital dash, and electronic climate control model. i cannot express the absolute joy it was to have one of these back at that exact period in time when absolutely NO ONE knew what it was. The pleasure of surprising (then new) Mustang and C4 Corvette owners with that thing is something that will never happen again. No one believed it was a Buick, either, since Buick Regals were the kind of car your grandpa drove around. Most thought it was a Monte Carlo. So many stories. I traded my 86 for a new 87 about a year later and it had the analog dash + manual AC...but by that time the cat was out of the bag and way too many people knew about them.

One of my dream cars. Almost had an 87 I was going to trade my Audi for in Chicago. On the test drive we got rear ended by someone with no insurance. Car was totalled. Owner was pissed but said it wasn't my fault and could have happened to him or the next guy. Now the prices are high and I'm kicking myself for not buying one when you could get them under $10,000 but I was young back then and couldn't easily afford that. Now they go for $40-70K or more depending on miles and condition. I've always preferred the solid roof because the T-tops flex. Damn $16K is a steal in this market. I noticed the name Duttweiler on the intercooler inlet. That's the Kenny Duttweiler neck upgrade. I'm like you, I'd be ecstatic to have my own GN but I would have came with my truck and a U-Haul trailer and then take it home and replace all those old sensors and fuel pump and all that sh!t.

I had a 88 Chevy Nova, with the Toyota L4 engine, loved it, but I learned something about those old eighties cars... the computers are not well shielded from RF. I had an oversized battery because I have always been into radio. Back then I had a CB installed under the dash. To mount it I had to finagle my own mounting system, The ashtray was basically the bottom piece of the center part of the dash, very little room to mount the radio and I could not mount the bracket directly to the dash or it prevented the ashtray from opening. I happened to be in Radio Shack and they had a bracket for adding after market stereo equipment like an EQ or tape deck (Cassette or eight track) under the dash it was two part one mounted to the radio one mounted to the underside of the dash. It was wide enough to mount across the ashtray, but would crush the ashtray preventing its use. I went to the hardware store and got longer screw but still had no standoffs. I remembered some old copper tubing, and I had extra nuts for the screws. I put the the screws through the mount , tighten down the bolt to the mount then added another nut to each bolt height needed. I cut the copper tubing forced it over the nut on the mount using the second nut and a washer, the tubing was about 1/2 an inch long. The tubing went over the nut on the mount but had to be forced which made if hex shaped I wiggled it off and I flopped it and inserted the the second nut into it and did it again. This made the copper tubing with the nuts in each end act as a spacer. I put the screws through the dash all was good. The mount I used had more connections than needed as I only used two speaker terminal, and the power terminals. The speaker terminal were for the PA, the two halves of the mount could be separated just slide one side out. I would detach the antenna by unscrewing it slide the radio out, store it in the glove box. When I started using the radio I discovered that at a light the car would die when I talked on the radio. Maybe drawing too much current? No. I connect another battery to the radio and disconnected it from the car's battery. Again I was at the light and the car died when I talked. How is that possible? The radio is on it's own battery. I crawl under the dash, that is when I realized the back of radio was near the car's computer. I was hoping I would not need to reposition the radio. I tried relocating where the antenna was routed to take it further from the computer. Next light, and I talked again... This time no issues. So I reconnected the radio to the car batter and put the other battery back in the garage. That radio was peaked and clipped to max efficiency. 100% modulation without a power Mic, and planned to never use one, The radio was putting out 8 watts on AM twice what it should yet was not over heating, on side band over 20 watts. I have talked to people all over and the radio always good to them. Thank you Igor for the work on that radio, though likely you will never see this thank you, and have possibly gone to the Great Gig in the Sky. Just goes to show computer from the eighties were not as reliable and could be effected by thing not even attached to the cars electrical system.

I've always owned GTOs, (6 of them over my life) The GTO is a legendary car and I still own a 67 convertible with tripower. I did buy a 2018 Hellcat widebody and use it as a daily driver. Under the hood crank and cam sensors , the transmissions ( 200 4r ) are not built to take all the power the 3.8-7 puts out . Keep the rear differential serviced . Ignition module under coil pack . The rear main seal usually leaks on all t-types and grand nationals ( most were replaced with a one piece aftermarket seal under warranty) . I took one out on a test drive after rear main was replaced back in the late 80’s and mechanic told me to “get it hot “ I got pulled over for doing 97mph in a 55 ( got a warning I knew the State Trooper) ! One of my good friend's dad designed that engine for Buick. He went to our autos class to try and help diagnose an issue on a student's (then new) Grand Nash that the dealer couldn't fix, and he disconnected a bunch of electronics and wires and just yanked them off, and the car turned on and ran perfectly. Those ECU's with that back silicone crap were made to melt inside so you'd have to replace it endlessly. While the Grand National was the fastest car of the day, it was well known to be a great big POS!!!!! Since then so many upgrades have come about via the aftermarket scene to make it a properly great car, the likes of which Buick/GM never intended. This car was a money pit for EVERYONE who bought one, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! LOL Great find and after discovering your channel throughout the Delorean build, I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing this car's journey to glory. I know the feeling of having your car stall out in traffic and holding everyone up...I felt my anxiety rising every time you took off to cross a busy road. By the way, we DO use salt in Colorado, just not rock salt. We have a mixture of sand and Mag Chloride, which doesn't rust out cars so much but it does weaken wood power line poles. That way we will have a nice, rust free car when a power line collapses on top of our vehicle😁

I would suggest taking a look at the cam gear. I have 2 1986 Oldsmobile 98's with the 3800 and both had plastic cam gears. One had a broken cam gear that allowed the timing chain to rattle. Also if they do start to come apart they send plastic into the oil pan and can plug the pickup tube. Good luck and cant wait to see what you find.
@@3n3ly7m9 The factory upper timing chain sprocket has Nylon coated teeth that get hard and brittle with age and break off and end up in the oil pan.

@@3n3ly7m9 For some reason in 85-86 the 3800 had plastic or like Airwolf said Nylon teeth on the outside of the gear. GM did this to quite them up a bit. Sad thing is they are also an interference motor so if enough of the teeth fail it will jump timing and destroy the motor. I did a video on my channel replacing one that was in such bad shape it broke the cam sensor magnet and caused the car to shut off and more than likely saving the motor.

I've found that most parts store guys and girl's( such a big turn on to see a girl who knows her car parts and how they work) for that matter are some of the best people when it comes to trying to help or letting you work on your vehicle while in their parking lot. It really goes a long way with me when a car parts store manager let's you keep the car in their parking lot until the next day or while you work on it to make the repair. I live in Huntsville Alabama and we have a great bunch of O'Reilly parts store employees near where I live who are always helpful and will go that extra mile to discuss what's mechanically wrong with your vehicle. Props to the Andrew Jackson Way location for being there whenever I needed the right part and or assistance. It means alot.

couple of things....the back bumper strip shouldn't have a white stripe. if you can see the converter it is missing the transmission shield. the car is running bad because there is a module under the coil pack that is bad and get AC Delco plugs to replace those autolite plugs. that uncovered port that you pointed out needs to be left uncovered or you will not get full boost. it also looks like the injectors are bluetop aftermarket injectors. the car is a pegleg 3.42:1 (g87 on the rpo tag a g80 g87 would be positive traction 3.42). you also have an aftermarket exhaust. you also need to check the inlet and the outlet on the intercooler. if they are the same size then the intercooler has been modified

also check the transmission valve body for a tag that says BFR. you need a BFR valve to be able to shift properly under full boost

Great video Alex! Thanks for sharing your car buying adventures. The cutting out issue still seems fuel related to me. Maybe that fuel pressure gauge is stuck at ~20psi and not actually reading correctly. Once you're able a full go-through of the ENTIRE fuel system from tank to injectors could be in order. This one is going to be worth the work. Beautiful piece of 80's car history. Good luck!!!
