In this video, Bart Hickey a completely blind mechanic of 30 years gets my mystery auction Firebird tuned to perfection! Bart tunes engines by sound and to watch him in action is simply amazing. My 1985 Firebird Trans Am was bought at auction for $1,100 and was built by a big name builder in the Knight Rider KITT world. It was designed after the Banshee concept car by Pontiac in the late '80s and after Mr. Hickey tuned the carburetor, changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, and adjusted the carburetor floats, she runs like a top. We go for a ride in the car too and even light up the tires. I had a blast making this video and I hope you all enjoy it! Oh and yes this is the same blind mechanic featured in the Mercedes Benz AMG Commercial titled "My Father’s Dream: Blind Mechanic Drives Car for the First Time in His Life."

Dude, you got hacked, and you want extra security, yet you're using nord? In case you're not aware, they suffered a system intrusion (they got hacked) close to two years ago, and covered it up, deliberately keeping it from the public, and their customers. We only found out a few months ago, because someone blew the whistle. While the intruders had access to their system, they stole a shitload of customer information, and it was recently published to the internet. Shilling for nord right now is really not a good look, and is bad for your reputation. fossbytes.com/nordvpn-credential-stuffing-attacks/

David Pimentel I still have my central vision, but I have 0 peripheral vision. Since the peripheral is where light is processed, I can’t see in the dark or low light areas either. Next time you empty a roll of toilet paper, cut it in half so you have 2 small tubes. Take those tubes and put them up to your eye like a pair of binoculars, and that’s about all I can see. Unless it’s right in front of me, I won’t see it.

Izzie how do you type when you can’t see
@izzieb
@izzieb 4 жыл бұрын
Being blind doesn't necessarily mean you can't see, it usually just means the vision you do have is very poor. There are cases where someone may have no vision at all, such as when someone is born without the optical nerves or where the optical nerves haven't developed properly (as I'd imagine is the case for the person in the video, as he was born blind). In my case, I just have very poor vision due to a progressive eye disease. My vision was fine until my last teens. I have had surgery on my eyes that helped somewhat, but the issues continued and my vision is getting worse again. To answer your question, I can touch type. I just have trouble making out details (at any distance) and as such it can be difficult to read things. Luckily I have some very understanding friends who will help me when I need. P.s. Sorry for the long reply but thought you might appreciate a good answer to your questions.

I take advantage that I grew up with only 50 60 and 70's cars and we were hi tec if we had a timing light but we mostly did it buy feel. I remember we would have old man Price(he was only in his 40's ha) tune ours when we couldn't get it just right. He lost his sight from diabetes. He could hit the mark in record time. He would tell you what car drove by with telling us if it was a big block and auto or straight. He would tell us on this one car was needing wheel bearings evertime it drove by. Disabled doesn't mean useless it means extraordinary accomplishments.

I grew up working on cars on our farm and my dad didn't believe in a timing light or anything Haha but if taught me alot, I have 3 lights in my box today and barely use them because i still tune it by ear. We didnt have the money to buy fancy parts so we modified parts off other cars, trucks, jeeps or equipment to get us to work and school. I'm glad I grew up like that because I've never called for a tow truck and in a bind my truck still will get me to work and home

It's so hard to imagine what Bart has to overcome to be able to do what he does so well. He's blind from birth, which means he learnt everything he knows without any idea of how an engine or even a car looks like. Whatever he touches, he can only build a mental image and even then, he can't know if what he imagines, is actually accurate. This means his learning curve is way steeper than someone who lost his sight later in life. I am humbled and awed by this man. I have all my sensory functions intact and yet I can't even come close to doing what Bart can. God bless you and your family, Mr Hickey.

When tuning an analog setup, eye sight is basically a hindrance, as you can see. This mechanical genius has a huge advantage compared to seeing mechs, because he doesn't need to rely on his eyes, and therefore mostly machines to bring him info. That's why the tune is much more precise, and diagnosing the engine is easier, and always on point, 'cause the info he gets with his senses. He can probably pin point a bad valve from three feet away, just by listening the idle, and find the sweet spot that the flicker and O2 sensor just misses, 'cause the info is corrupted. I would have let him finish the job, and just admire from the readouts his marvelous skills. When tuning an engine, I too use smell, touch and ear. Smelling the exhaust, feeling the advance point, listening idle. Not by a long shot as accurately has he does, but enough to understand how he does it. If he were my local mechanic, or at least on the same continent, I would definitely seek for his services.

Or you know, tune with a computer? Which will be better in everyway compared to a "analog" tune
@oikkuoek
@oikkuoek 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexstromberg7696 As I explained, when tuning an analog setup, i.e old carburetor engine, every gadget gives corrupted info. Timing mark is slightly off, timing light has a delay, O2 sensor is never calibrated perfectly etc. So no, the best way to tune an old machine is by feel and ear. It works on ECU-based setups too. I've diagnosed and fixed several "unfixable" cases with no computers, after the computers have given wrong fault codes. They are not perfect either. And then there is cases of leaking valves, broken piston rings, leaking gaskets etc that no computer can ever detect. It's just knowledge and skills, that can never be replaced with any software.

@oikkuoek
@oikkuoek 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexstromberg7696 Actually, no. Not in NA applications. carefully tuned analog setup with dialed-in timing advance diaphragm is always more responsive than EFI due to same reasons. Delay and accuracy of fuel delivery being key factors. Only when power adders are used, EFI starts to gain advantage.

I'm 27 years old I've been a diesel mechanic now 11 years a couple years ago I started noticing my hands weren't working as well as they used to and they were going numb and they wouldn't function like this should so I went to the doctor and they said that probably between the time I'm 35 and 40 I'm not going to be able do what I do for a living anymore because I'm going to lose the dexterity of my hands and they're not going to work properly I've been throwing myself a pity party for years ever that that shit ain't nothing if mr. Hickey can do what he does I damn sure can work on anything a doctor would just tell you limitations it's up to you to improvise and overcome those and if you're passionate about something this is proof that you can do anything that you set your mind to the most inspirational video I've ever seen in my entire life thank you for uploading this Alex God bless you excuse my grammar I'm not very good at I'm making things look politically correct and perfect when it comes to typing

great to see someone tuning old school style. amazing this man doesnt let his disability hinder him. 2 things. 1) eldelbrock carb is a good streetable carb. the holley can be better only because its more tunable. both carbs come tuned too lean from the factory so rejetting is always required. 2) the see through glass inline filters are dangerous. they are subject to leaking at the seals or the glass cracking and causing a fire.

These kind of videos make me get emotional. Can't grasp Bart is blind from birth yet he is able to do much more specific jobs than any regular mechanic, while I sit in front of the computer and struggle in learning something new about cars, trying to replace a headbulb without getting completely filthy. Great video, not only the technical content but these things that go beyond "a common viewer". Oh, and what better than another MB inclined mechanic...😉

My mom had a piano that was in disrepair and called a fellow that was recommended. When he showed up it turned out that he was blind. He removed the entire keyboard and strikers and took it back to his shop and completely rebuilt it, and then reinstalled and tuned the piano. He told us that piano repair was one vocation the blind could do and was trained at the last school for the blind that taught it. I never knew. This mechanic that tunes cars is phenomenal.

Amazing what you start to learn about the eyes and the way the brain compensates when you're going through it! Also amazing what surgery makes possible these days. 10 years later and I drive and can also read the smallest print on electronic components all without glasses.

I know Bart is a lot better than I am tuning by ear because his hearing is much more intense than mine ever was. I’m 61. Until I was 35, I did all tuning by ear even timing unless my light was handy. I always checked it later but because fuel changed so much in the 80’s I would play with timing to get the best performance. Bart is awesome 👏! Great job guys!

Great video. A lot of people will dislike the Edelbrock carb (AKA Carter AFB), but one of the nice things that I remember from when I had mine on my Olds 455 is that once tuned, it was virtually maintenance free. If I recall, there are no gaskets below the fuel level so I never had a leak. For the street, it was a great, driveable carb. It may not flow humongous numbers, but it never, ever let me down. I also found the tuning to be super fun because you could play with the two-step rods and jets to get the perfect flow for high vacuum cruise and low vacuum power. Good times.
