Hey guys I’m the previous owner. The Mercedes part is actually a evolve IAT relocation kit. The S62 suffers from massive heatsoaking especially in hotter states like GA which I had it in and Tennessee. It’ll either mount inside the air box by drilling a hole or on the outside like i had it. I sold it to Alex before I could actually relocate it into the airbox itself. As far as the differential bushing, it’s a unicorn billet egg. It removes any slop from the drivetrain, the E39 M5 has a strong subframe but it’s known to crack the front differential bushing. That small oil leak I was monitoring it throughout my ownership it’s from the passenger side timing cover. Valve cover gaskets are new. The whole front end was replace with Lemforder which is OEM as well as TRW parts. I’d never put Chinese anything on it lol. Whenever that car needed something I replaced it, and didn’t think twice about it. That fuel filter is only a year old as well. Axles have been replaced in the rear under my ownership as well.

Interesting about heatsoaking because my 2005 E320 with 239K miles heatsoaks after a few runs at 120 mph. I have changed the MAF and MAP sensors twice before realising it was heat! Maybe I need a new larger Intercooler.

Great video!! good to see the M5 getting some love! ;) regarding damage to cylinder walls.. as far as i know there are 2 fairly practical solutions.. the first is to bore larger to get some clean alusil and then hone and expose to spec.. the second is using a company called Kolbenschmidt who produce alusil sleeves and sleeve the block..

Never had an M car, but several bmw’s. Found them easiest to work on, compared to honda, acura, chevy, nissan, ford, toyota, saturn...what else have i worked on? I forget. Either way, always found tons of room, and seemed like the engineers had ease of maintenance in mind designing them. Figured it was so the techs could run through work for people who buy bmw’s and take them to the dealer. Either way, always love the content. Keep it up Alex.

Keen to hear how you get on with the diff whine. I should also add that my diff recently had poly bushes added, replacing the factory rubber ones. A by-product is more diff whine/noise at highway speeds. Nothing too bad though. Also, those velocity stacks look damn cool. Visited the Ferrari factory/museum in Maranello & Modena where they had quite a few of their race engines on stands, and they all had the velocity stacks on them.

The bearing wear comes down to cold starts and people reving engines that aren't fully warm. Yeah, oil weight and cleanliness is a factor too, but it's cold motors causing improper lube that causes the main problems.

You missed the BIGGEST factor of all...ridiculously low clearances, the 60 weight oil is crazy but with normal clearances it wouldn’t be a huge issue nor would cold starts.

A fix for the aluminium cylinder blocks we sometimes do here in Australia is do what is known as "step lining". This involves the process of boring the cylinders beyond machining limits, then machining a "step" 5mm deep in the cylinders, and inserting the liners. These are sealed to the cylinder block using high temperature sealant to prevent coolant leaking into the sump.

Check this before bying a expencive Airbag-module. Known problem. Airbag-light usually triggered by faulty sencor in passenger seat, sencor struggle to decide if there is a passenger or not and are creating mutiple or repetedly codes connected to airbag. The slight whine from the rear diff is most likely due to the solid bushing. You get the same slight whine when people replace the fluid filled bushing on a 350Z. The solid bushing transfers high frequency vibrations directly into the subframe and can be heard in the cabin.

Great video. FYI those are not oil pumps in the upper oil pan. Those are scavenging solenoids that activate @1.0G to prevent oil starvation. What kills them is inactivity, so its "good" for your M5 to drive it hard(once up to temp).

Sounds like a Scotty Kilmer myth. The closest thing to the truth here is that certain German cars built in the US and Mexico are lower in quality than the ones built in Germany or the surrounding countries. I can not imagine they'd actually have two batch of parts for the assembly and where the car is headed determines if it gets the better or worse parts.

In the middle of the 90's I worked at the Ford assembly line in Cologne to finance my studies at the university. All vehicles were built with exactly the same parts. A fellow student worked full time at Mercedes before going to college to study. He too said that there were no differences at all between the vehicles. However, there was disingenuous behavior at Opel. If one knew that a car magazine had ordered a vehicle for a crash test, then more stable wishbones were installed in it, for example, in order to achieve better test results. This was, of course, fraud. The vehicles that are sold to the USA are extremely cheap and often have the larger engines and the best equipment. Even in the 60s, VW Beetles destined for the US market had better equipment. For example, a lot of E36 BMWs with 105hp and 118hp were sold in Germany - the cars are so expensive that few people can afford the M3s with over 300hp. In the USA the M3s are often cheaper than the 150 hp E36s in Germany. So the USA buyers are favored over the German customers!

I drive an E46 M3 which apparently uses the same internals for the Limited Slip Diff. (or the whole same diff). Last year I developed a notorious sound that I found out was a known thing with that diff. When you would turn really slow like when parking it would make a grindish whine sound. More whine than grind. I looked online and everywhere in the BMW forums there was talk that I MUST use the BMW fluid even though it seemed silly to me as there are many high quality fluids with FM boosters and additives for LSD's. So I bought some Liqui Molly at only $45 for two liters (You need 1.2 liters to fill lol). No change at all. As I drove for the next few months it started to get worse. So finally I broke down and paid the (Canadian dollars) $85 per 500ML a bottle. So I needed three. Ouch. Put it in and thought it wouldn't matter. But wow it almost instantly fixed the problem completely. I haven't heard a sound out of it since. So I don't know what the Germans do to make that kind of difference. But when they say you MUST have the expensive BMW fluid.....YOU MUST HAVE THE EXPENSIVE BMW DIFF FLUID. LOL. Love the car now that I've done the subframe reinforcements and the Vanos. It's never had a bad day. Except for the stalling when at temp in reverse or just in gear out of the blue about twice a month. Can't figure it and neither can the shops. Great Vids and content! the e46 m3 subframe mount issue was not as widespread as the internet forums would have you believe. it primarily impacted the early m3s of that chassis and could potentially impact any e46 that got driven in a spirited manner. after 2002 they reinforced the welds and significantly lowered the odds of the issue appearing, though its still possible. if you have an e46, its a good idea to weld in a reinforcement kit when changing your subframe bushings even if there is no sign of the crack issue on your car, just because why not have some insurance?

With the rod bearing issue the wear is caused by people not letting the oil get up to temp before revving up the car. Happens a lot on the E9X M3’s with the S65 V8s. Most people don’t know the temp gauge measures coolant temp and not oil temp.

The Solid metal bushing (@8:32) that you have in the front Diff mount is nicknamed a "Unicorn Egg" and is a solid front diff mount bushing made by Einhorn Industries. You should consider google-ing them or finding them on facebook and look at the stuff they make for the e39 M5, especially their one of a kind exhaust manifolds!

P cars suffer from the bore scoring as well. at 10 degrees F the piston actually expands. Tight tolerances when making the block is the cause.

My E46 M3 is cracked on the rear axle carrier panel. Off to Redish in the Uk she must go. She isn't a daily but it will be sorted soon. Have also used the official diff oil as well does make a difference.

That howeling noise could very well be from the wheel bearing. I had a similar situation and turned out the diff was 100% fine, just noise transfer from a bad wheel bearing.

The rear diffuser is not an M5 diffuser, it's from a regular e39 with the M-sport package, the lip on the bottom is not there on an M5, it's more like a rolled pan.

See the forum M5Board for inexpensive bushings on the oil filter housing and PS reservoir. There's a company in New York that has them. The BMW pieces are ridiculously expensive. Check the date stamp on the fuel filter - have to think yours has been replaced but when I bought my car with 131k miles on it the fuel filter was original. Changing that and spark plugs made a nice improvement for me. Cam position sensors are a bitch, especially Bank 2 (driver's side) exhaust. When you do those replace the Allen head fasteners with standard 10mm hex head. You're going to love this car.

I used to race two stroke motocross bikes in the late 90s early 2000s, and the mfgs all put a coating on the cylinder walls called "nikisil" which had the exact same problem as the alloy m5 block. In fact it could not be repaired you had to sleeve the cylinder otherwise replce it.

Hey Alex, E39 M5 doesn’t have a “servotronic” steering. It has hydraulic assist recirculating ball. If you want more feel, a rack and pinion unit from e39 528 would give you more feedback. Camber plates at the front would get rid of the at the limit under steer. Do cold air ducts from center grill helps a lot. Only Mercedes would make a MAF plug extension. LOL. You bought the best 4 door BMW ever made. Evo voted it #3 in the best M cars shootout. Only behind M1 and e30 M3. Both were designed for racing. Have fun drifting her. Easies car to drift I have driven.

Alex, you should look at BND automotive and their ACES product for the cylinder galling. It's supposed to provide lubrication to the cylinder walls during combustion. I wonder on the diff if the bmw fluid is similar in comparison to ford friction modifier? ? Love the cars. Also is the rod bearing issue on the bmw due to some odd harmonics ??

I own a 2000 M5. I replaced the exhaust with a complete Supersprint system. Floating headers, low back pressure cats, new x pipe with no resonators and Supersprint mufflers. Beautiful sound. I’m interested in the intake velocity stacks pictured in the video. Who makes them and are they still available?
