Fun fact: The biplanes were made of a lot of paper. This meant that the AA shells would not have exploded unless they hit the engine or other critical component. So a lot of shells overpenetrated

Buytrate dope (fabric) over metal frames. you don't need an exploding AA round to do damage, yes bullets pass through, but they make holes, holes that become rips, etc
