These guys were... special. A sign of the changing times, the new face of Bionicle. When they started using ACTUAL GUNS (don't give me that "blasters" nonsense, LEGO) and the theme generally became angrier, meaner, more about scifi warfare than fantasy (even thought we'd just wrapped up the part of the story with the literaly giant scifi city). Yet these figures were oddly vibrant and elemental-looking. Indeed, they looked like an evil Toa team, which isn't something we've seen attempted since. They were flawed, but had big personality.

You're so right about these really hitting in the transition to a new style of Bionicle, and with it a new mood and storyline focus. I really like the ambition the design team went through to make this evil Toa team and go for something we'd never seen, and to your point haven't since

I could not agree less, this was the moment I left bionicle. I felt like they really departed from what I liked about the series, which was that even in metro nui, the characters and stories felt more fantasy than sci-fi. I think the marketing really didn't help. The fact all the marketing took place in what looked like the real world (with squashy sofa's, chain link fences and concrete), rather than something utterly seperate from our world really broke the immersion for me.

The Piraka have always been my favorite for, really, one particular reason. In our family, I was the Green kid; I'd always get the green toa/badguy set every time (up until the Barraki, where the green guy wasn't in any target so I just gave up and got Kalmah) The problem was that a lot of the green characters were either comedic relief or just dumb besides Lewa, which I wasn't into at the time. It was so awesome to see that Zaktan was the leader of the Piraka. Seeing that Green representation made me feel like the coolest kid for getting a leader of the pack while my siblings all got the other piraka. What's weird is that, despite other sets being objectively better, I always have this weird sense of comfort and familiarity when playing with Zaktan, even with the rubber that limits his movement, it's almost lifelike, like he's trying to move on his own, or disobeying your movements in a rebellious manner? Thank you for these Mata Nui mondays and letting us see the sets we had, or never had, in HD
@captaincanaveral Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I remember that. It was such a small thing, but not having the red character as the leader was such a game changer as a kid (although Hakann’s mental blast was still one of my favourite abilities in the lore), it really made you want to try and get the other characters in the series too

One thing you missed out on is that all of the melee weapons are able to rotate 180 degrees and have a different feel to them, and you did have Zaktan and Hakann's hands backwards and Avak's forearm backwards which each would have inhibited this function. Also, there is a three piraka combination model other than Irnakk for the other three Piraka, so you might want to give that a review with the Irnakk set or something. I agree with you about wanting all of the piraka to have that accent piece that Thok and Hakann do; it really makes those sets just a little bit cooler.

These were my first complete team of canister-sized villains. Vezok (blue) was my first, while Avak (brown) was my last. Both of these along with Zaktan (green), I obtained at Toys R Us, while the other three I obtained elsewhere. I remember getting Hakann (red) from a book store near me on a field trip at the end of my second grade year on Thursday, June 22, 2006. These were the first canister sets to not have a gear function, and the last to come in a cylindrical or oblong cylyndirical canister. From this point on, canister sets would become more pose-able and less clone-like to each other. The new piece that is used for the right arm on these in Metru red (New Dark red), Metru green (earth green), and the new color of "reddish brown" are exclusive to their respective Piraka. The lower leg pieces in the first and third of these are exclusive as well. The knee armor on these in reddish brown is exclusive to Avak. Interestingly, due to historically low sales of brown-colored sets throughout the first five years of the theme, Avak was the final Bionicle set to be primarily that color. Reidak (black) and Hakann also mark the debut of the Toa Metru hip piece in dark stone and "Mata red" respectively. Vezok and Thok (White/light stone) mark the debut of the double socket joints from the Toa Metru in sand and medium blue, and that piece in sand green, sand yellow and Mata red are exclusive to Zaktan, Avak and Hakann respectively. The same goes for the hand socket and Visorak double socket joint in sand green and sand yellow. The webbed feet used on half of them is exclusive to Avak in reddish brown, and Zaktan marks the final appearance of the Toa Metru lower arms in Metru green. Along with the "Lava Hawk" and "Dagger Spider" combiners from the Voya Nui Matoran last week (which are the last to use the red/brown/green and blue/black/white combinations), the Piraka are the final sets to have combiner instructions in the backs of their manuals, though none of the three here are canon.

@@AllOutBrick You're very welcome. In fact, 2006 was the year of Bionicle that I had the highest number of sets from, missing only five (Two of which were minifigure-scale) Between the Piraka and the Inika, a "semi-Titan" set was released as a Wal-Mart exclusive (At least in the United States) called "Irnakk" (8626). It's technically a combiner of Vezok, Reidak and Thok, but it comes with Thok's spine recolored in gold along with some Technic corrugated tubes in gold. I wasn't sure if you would be covering that before the Toa Inika.

As a kid, Bionicle was my FAVORITE thing, so it was the go-to gift for me every gift-giving occasion. And around my birthday or Christmas it was the usual routine that I would get the full set of six current canister figures (I was very, very lucky in this regard). When I got the Piraka around my 13th birthday, I was left alone that evening, and I built all six of them in one go because I was so excited. My mom was less than pleased. In my humble opinion (though I know I'm not alone), this group was the milestone that signalled the most important change in the main Bionicle character design, which had slowly been building since the Rahkshi: specfifically the pivot into the three-piece torso, hinged-limb design, as well as future reliance on the ol' reliable Metru head mold. It blew my MIND. It was revolutionary, though perhaps not as big of an immediately-obvious, all-at-once change as the Toa Metru. They laid the groundwork for the future of Bionicle, both in set design and overall tone. I wish they had brought back some of the colors used here, specifically the pastel "secondary" colors used on the socket bones of Zaktann, Vezok, and Avak. If they had given us more of Zaktan's foliage green (I don't remember the official color name) in future sets, it would have been my favorite color. And man, when I tell you I used the glowing eyes in ALL my MOCs for a while? Hoo, boy. What a frickin' squad.

Man, the Piraka were revolutionary for Bionicle as a whole in my opinion. Not only did they deviate from the "drone" aspect all non-titan villains before them had been given, replaced now with a sense of individuality which ultimately makes them far more interesting as characters, but they set the standard for all following villains to come in the line, and mark the point where Bionicle began to take itself more seriously than it previously had - this ultimately being what I believe the climatic peak of the theme as a whole. I was lucky enough to grab one of these guys (Thok) brand new for 27 dollars online a few years ago, and fondly remember the excitement of coming home after having finally received him in the mail, and building him - needless to say, my expectations were quite exceeded. I ended up having to put him away in a storage box somewhere for some time, but a few months ago my mother was able to find him again, and I can say with great pride he now stands on my display shelf where I've spent many times posing and playing with him, never ceasing to enjoy it even all these years later. Though flawed to some extent, these sets truly were fantastic.

The inika and piraka have slightly different upper torso molds, causing one of the pin spots on the piraka torso to be filled in and thus needing to make them shorter due to the design. So depending on which way you build connect the lower and upper torso parts signify if its a piraka or inika build. An example of this is the mahri jaller and.kongu sets. Jaller uses the inika design, being taller, while kongo uses a modified piraka design (due to his shoulder connections) making him stockier and shorter.

The Toa Hordika having different colored weapons was one of the things I really liked about them. I really liked the monochromatic colors in the Metru and it could've been the same here

@@vaimantobe3034 ha, I’ve bought Ehlek brand new for this very reason
@vaimantobe30343 жыл бұрын
@@TymaDem have you opened it yet? Ehlek was my first Barakki in 2007 and those joins snapped the same day. Same with his replacement. I ended up getting replacement parts directly from Lego and basically didn't dare to touch Ehlek much after that. I think even some of the replacement parts had the issue... So ehm... brand new might not help much
@TymaDem3 жыл бұрын
@@vaimantobe3034 yep already opened it. I ended up buying 5 out of 6 as brand new, because most of them used on eBay are in poor condition (ether incomplete or missing instructions/canister). I have all six as display models so I am not too worried about the joints

I found that over time and out in the open air the spines have really became more flexible. Now I don’t have nearly as hard of a time posing them, even though I don’t want to do it much in case of damage.

You CAN actually replace the eye batteries by pushing a very tiny flathead screwdriver into the bottom to free up the clips. They take CR927 batteries.

I absolutely love these guys, it's interesting how despite being super edgy, they still fit within the world and it didn't kill the franchise because they had so much personality and charm in their scumminess.

The batteries are replaceble ive you use a small slit screwdriver to pry the middle connection points open one by one and after that the other two. The plastic has a lot of flex in it so as long as you take your time and the material is warm it should not break. The innerts are made of a simple, straight up LED, a small isolating foamstrip and a specislised armwatch batterie you need to get from the internet. (They are pretty cheap and I got mine in under 24 h)

I'm surprised you gave the Vahki a higher rating! I personally thought the Piraka and Barraki (Phantoka being VERY close) were the 2 best villain sets and in my opinion the 2 best sets altogether!

If nobody said about it the bateries can be replaced with another ones with the correct moddel, which is cr297. I must say that is really difficult remove them cause the flanges are terrible and you must beware but I think it worth to do it cause you can get them for cheap!

Had the red one, somehow lost the 'laser' beam and got so damn sad. Only years later did I find out that you could just send Lego a letter and they'd send you replacement parts at little to no cost lol

The Piraka are weaker as sets in retrospect, given that their build became standardised and many models only got more monstrous with time. By themselves, though, they are absolutely striking and fearsome in the way that they tower over the Toa Nuva, both in toy form and in the story.
