This one was so fascinating to me when I was a kid. Great idea for a set. They should’ve done something similar with the 2008 line besides just vehicles. Imagine a new exo toa armor for mistika tahu!

This is the first time I've built it and it's very different from any Bionicle set I've built, and really like it! I think it's tough to do this in a future year without it coming off as "just another Exo-Toa", but the concept should have stuck anyways.

I think it could've worked really well in the 2007 story. Nuparu could've taken the remains of the broken Maxilos robots around the Pit and then turned them into a "Super Boxor" designed for all-out battles against the Barraki's armies.

oh believe me, seeing this as a kid when this came out back in the day it was the s**t. It was just so darn cool seeing them hop in these mechs and kick bohrok butt after having a rough time. We never thought they could have gotten more powerful but then, the toa nuva came and their dual functions with their tools were such game changers. bionicle was something that always evolved as time went on and the sets clearly showed.

If I remember correctly Exo-toa were build by brotherhood of Makuta. Kinda interesting that they were compatible with toa. I know they were used as sentries by Makuta in Metru-nui

They were built to aid the Toa, but the Brotherhood also had them as a failsafe in case things went sour. the six with the Bahrag on Mata Nui were I believe a set that had been modified by Arthaka and were outside of the Makuta's influence.

I've never heard about Arthaka modifying those six units, but that sounds plausable. From what I recall from reading flavour text in catalogs and other promotional material, it was stated, or at least implied that they were just abandoned. To be honest I always loved this set. It's a shame that Exo-toa barely appeared in story.

@@nihili4196 Actually, they were put there as a countermeasure in case the Bahrag awoke when they weren’t supposed too. They should’ve automatically fought and stopped the Bahrag when they awoke, but they were prevented from doing so and had to be piloted. Probably Teridax’s doing.

I'm pretty sure the box/booklet with pics of the Toa Nuva did come out before the actual Toa Nuva did, I remember getting this and being really intrigued & excited at the possibility of new Toa coming out soon

This is getting closer to perfect w more B-Roll! One thing though is like when you’re talking about the non-possibility of the legs but it can pose at the hips, I would like to see that up close being moved and such. It would be a great visual. Things to try in the future for the viewers.

Fantastic production quality as always!! A note for the Exo-Toa main model, the gears on the back bring the head out of the way so when a Toa is inside, the Exo-Toa's head is wore like a backpack

I never got many BIG Lego sets, and with Bionicle I never got many of the "Titans" or larger Rahi...but I remember getting this Exo-Toa and like you said, being a kid getting this was mindblowing. Just how tall it was, the colours, the way it contrasted with the colours of the Toa. It legitimately felt like an absolute beast of a machine, like a Terminator or something.

We do see Exo-Toa again. The same sex from 2002 appear in 2003 and get trashed by the Bohrok Kal, and other suits appear in the origin stories of the Rahaga and the Barraki

Imagine if on bara magna (the glatorians planet I believe) when takanuva and tahu escape the rahi-infested robot, they are sporting the exo-toa. Everyone would be easily wiped and just imagine the reaction of the piraka's face. What in the name of makuta is that?!

Thank you so much, I was going through my old Lego box from when I was a child, I knew it had a tonne of bionical pieces in it (big bin from Lego land) but found a tonne of "Technic Rotation Joint Ball Loop with Pin with Friction" pieces. I looked on brick link but it gave no indication of its use! I looked at your video though and saw how they work in the instruction book. V sweet.

I bought an Exo Toa for $60 after shipping and mine is missing some parts that I plan on picking up off of brick link. I'm also planing on modifying the legs to bend at the knees and maybe the ankels to give it more possibility's to pose in. My Lewa looks awesome in the suit. Also one of the main reasons I love the early 2000s Bionicle is the gear and mechanical functions built into the sets. I really didn't like the only ball socket options in the later sets and they felt so thin and wide.

When I had this one I originally built the chicken dinosaur version. later on I wanted to rebuild it into the exo toa but it turned out some of the pieces were missing. Now it is a half finished improvised exo-toa lol.

Oddly enough, Onua and Pohatu Mata don't fit into the Exo Toa model without modification. Also I think this is one of at least two Bionicle sets which contains Robo Rider torso pieces, and is one of only two sets to contain a solid Bohrok headplate that isn't silver.

Outside of the BIONICLE subtheme, I think an all-black one was used in a Technic Darth Vader set from 2002 (also in Von Nebula in the 2010 Hero Factory line), and a translucent & orange one was used as a windshield for Furno's Bike (again in 2010 HF). ...I want to say that the piece was also released in solid Dark Blue at one time? but I don't know which set, and checking BrickLink feels like a bit of a cheat at this point...
