LEGO® Bionicle 8699 Takanuva | Review

So about the incident that changed Takanuva... Ahkmou, the guy who poisoned all the Po-matoran in the 2001 online game and became a set in 2004, was targeted to be light-leeched and turned into a Shadow Matoran like the other three we see, and then a Toa of shadow, but Takanuva jumped in the way. From the sound of it, though? There WERE plans at one point for a "Shadow Toa Ahkmou" set. They didn't get far but man, imagine seeing him fight among the Makutas' ranks in 2008. What would his colors even be? Brown and black? Orange? Keetorange? Gunmetal? Who knows?

Brown and gunmetal sounds like such a sick color combo. Maybe give him a "shadow leech slinger" by recoloring the barraki leech thrower into black and the leech into dark purple? (Yes I know those sligners function horribly but that would look super cool)

One thing I appreciated about this Takanuva set is that you can still tell it's him by the weapon and mask, unlike Mistika Tahu and Gali, who have no resemblance to their Nuva forms whatsoever.

No, I disagree, changes and upgrade is good, the mistika are my childhood toys back in 2008, I enjoy their build and fight back the shadows, why can't 2008 gets more love? It mark the final battle and they are still the toa nuva we know with upgreades you heartless fricking idiot.

Probably because the designs weren’t even the original nuva toa they were originally going to be the toa Mari there was never plans for them to be the toa nuva but takanuva probably always going to be a set so.

I really like this design. really shows how Takanuva's journey from hell changed him and he himself became more experienced as a warrior. of course he also harnessed dark thoughts

Takanuva was my first titan, he surprised me too with his size. Even though I liked him I did add some upgrades to make him look much more filled out. Thank you for such a great review!

This is honestly my favorite Bionicle set. I remember the day I found it on clearance at Kmart for $22 - buying and building the set was a core memory for me. It’s one of the three Bionicle sets I kept when I sold my lot before going to college (the other two being Hahli and Matoro Mahri) and I’m so glad I kept it around. It’s so well-designed, so posable and so sturdy, which makes it a great display piece in my office. I also love how it takes a great character and modernizes him without sacrificing anything on the design front (I actually like this set more than the original Takanuva). I honestly was never bothered by the lack of back plating, but maybe that’s because I don’t turn it around very often. Great review!

Not only is Takanuva my 2nd favorite character in Bionicle(Onua will always be #1), he is in some of my favorite Bionicle sets of all time with this set being by far my favorite Titan set in the entire series. It does so many things right, it nails the look of the character while giving us something fresh, it's well armored all the way around, it has great articulation, a cool mask, very fitting and cool weapons and it's a solid build that doesn't get floppy over time. It's easily the best set of 2008 too, man I love this guy!

I got Takanuva when he came out and loved it. However, this set is the most notable case of red axles and blue pins detracting from the model. I have mine all black axles and black pins to connect up the chest plate and it's night and day, he feels so much more aesthetically cohesive that way and it is a great boon to the set.

I always wanted this set. The mask looks so cool, like a reinforced version of the more ornate original. I honestly don’t mind the hands. The only downside I see is that the shoulders could become brittle like with Tuma in 2009

5:00 I agree with you, the back just screams for one more of the dark silver shield pieces. Ideally you could fill it out with the most minimal pieces via another dark silver shield piece, a technic 90 degree liftarm with the pin hole in it and two of the unity pieces used to connect the av matoran to the other sets. You could also easily add one or two to that list of pieces to be able to have one of the connection pieces for av matoran face outwards so it can be used if you really wanted, guess that would also make a holster for the staff :P

Highly recommend getting this one new. I got one sealed about a decade ago and just being on display, multiple parts split over time. I don't know that I'd trust a used one.

the thing that i love most about this figure, and maybe it ties into why the back is plain, but this figure actually has shoulder blades. sure they don't give it the perfect motion as a human's do, but they still lend quite a lot of function to the arms to give it enough posability while maintaining proper stability. the pneumatic-looking system between the feet and thigh are also a nice addition while the extra hips joints have some interesting structure as well that makes me think they were going for a skeletal motif and why those dark grey ball joints rotating up and down the back almost act like some sort of hip flexor makes this whole figure one of my favorites for engineering alone.

One thing that's nice about this set is its super easy to round off the few rough points swap the red axels that stick out for black ones add a single bushing or half bushing on his lance and mabye extend it a bit on the back end and add some back armor through either another shield piece or some gun metal hordika feet

I oddly didn't have most of the Titan-sized sets from 2008, apart from two of the "Battle Vehicles" which were released as part of the Summer wave that year. Until a few years ago, I never knew that Takanuva's shoulders were comprised of Takadox' heads in gunmetal, though they were exclusive to this set. The shells on his upper legs also appear in one other set in that color, and the shell on his chest in that color also appears in a Vehicle set (8994) in 2009. Takanuva also marks the final appearance of the Pinchers from Mantax (the black Barraki), though they also came in the Wal-Mart-exclusive "Mutran and Vican" (8952) earlier in that year. His "Twilight Lance" is comprised of three of the "Air Saber" from Lewa Phantoka, and his arms mark the third and final appearance of the Inika lower legs in white. His hands also have the 4x5x5 shell/claws from three of the Mistika-which are exclusive to this set in white, and they also mark the second and final appearance of the Mahri blades in white-which first appeared on Pridak (another Barraki). Even if some thought that Takanuva's legs had too much of the aesthetic of a Technic Star Wars "Big Fig" from 2001, the redesigned Toa Metru double socket joint and the Hordika feet in white which comprise them are also exclusive to this set. The rounded Inika feet in white make their second appearance here, having first appeared in Kopaka Phantoka at the start of that year, and this is the third and final appearance of the Hordika lower arm in white. This is the only Bionicle set to have the Technic 11M beam in white, and is the third of six sets to have that part overall, also appearing in two Technic sets before and after this, along with a Star Wars set (8019) in '09. Concurrently, Takanuva is also the fourth and final set to have the Technic 7M "Wing" from the earlier "Slizer" theme in white.

I feel like a gold mask for this set wouldn't have been too fitting as he's meant to have the powers of both light and shadow. Also, it would look very out of place as it would be the only gold piece in the set; and it's for that reason why I'm not too fond of the gold masks they eventually gave to the original Toa Mata, even if they did have the perk of each one having all 6 mask powers

Ok I've got insane theory, I heard that originally 08 Toa team was supposed to be Inika again, however they don't have white Toa, since well Matoro is dead (but lego still need to release 6 set). I think that they change Takanuva element because he originally was supposed to be 6 member of team

I think if they went that route they probably wouldn't have killed Matoro. In early iterations they considered making Ahkmou a Toa of Shadow. But when it was clear that the Toa Nuva would return they replaced Ahkmou with twilight Takanuva.

I hated how they changed Taka Nuva's color. Him being gold was perfect since gold is not a primary or secondary color like the other toa are, making him stand out even more. After all he is the seventh Toa that was declared a myth, so his color and appearance should be unique. And gold is symbolic of divinity, power, and faith, which is absolutely perfect for Taka Nuva's character and lore.
