Personally I think it needs all of those extra play features. They really make it a James Bond set. If it didn't have those they'd have to release it as just an Aston Martin DB5.

I would've preferred if they had done that. I think the model would've looked better if the designer hadn't needed to worry about implementing all those (admittedly cool) features, and it probably would've been cheaper too.

I like the gadgets. That's what makes it a Bond car! If it was just the car, every person you showed it to would say: "Does it have machine guns? Does it have the ejector seat?..etc." and then you'd have to say disappointingly "No.". So I agree, it needs those great features.

@@BensterGM I don't think it would work as a purely display model because as the video maker says, the actual car was much curvier. Without the special features it would just be an ok model of a classic vehicle that didn't really convey the styling if the original. But the features make it quite fascinating.

If Lego had released this set under the James Bond license without any gadgets people would have complained about the absence of those features: "Where are the machine guns?" "Where is the radar screen?" etc. And yes, if Lego decides to release a James Bond Lotus Esprit I expect them to include the submarine transformation in that car.

Well, it's not just a DB5. It's the James Bond DB5. As a Bond car it just has to sport all those nifty features. Thus the price is okay. Just a DB5 is useless, there are much more iconic cars to build - but the Bond DB5 is something completely different. I'm confused about how LEGO released this set. It's like, we get the Tweet hinting at an Aston Martin, then pretty much silence, then a leak or too, but then BAM, out of nowhere, on the day of VIP release, we get all the pictures, the design video... AND THE SET! This is really weird of LEGO... but I don't care, this set is awesome.

I think LEGO were trying to avoid any negative press from people who think the 007 licence is inappropriate for children, so they snuck it out as quietly as possible. Hopefully it sells well and leads to more James Bond sets. I really want the white Lotus Esprit that turns into a submarine from The Spy Who Loved Me.

I both agree and disagree with you on this one Jang. The design is AMAZING. And yes, the price is rough. But I think that a James Bond DB5 needs the features, it brings back memories of the old Matchbox model. Just to know that the ejector seat is there would make me happy, even if it's an display model that I never touch. (Great review as always!)

It's about the engineering and knowing that the features are there. I know a lot of Masterpiece Transformers collectors who always keep the models in either bot form or alt form, but the thing is that they CAN BE transformed and are great and interesting feats of engineering. Same for f.ex Bandai/Arcadia Macross toys.

Nice video. However, I absolutely don’t agree with your thoughts on making a plain static display DB5. This is Bonds Q version DB5 and as such it must have these features. It just wouldn’t be Bonds car, without them. While it is true that I won’t be playing with mine, just knowing it has these features makes it so much interesting to look at. That’s the beauty of hidden engineering.

What a great model. So many tricks and gadgets and the build process is amazing. I love how the 2x4 flat tile clips in the side fender as well as many other elements that go together so well in a unconventional way to make this car.

When you presented the Model, like halfway through...i was like:"Well, this is a very nice and also nice looking Model...so sad that there is no way, with Lego Parts, to also include the ejection Seat...then it would be perfect" ... Mind blown ... And to be honest, the long list of Features makes is interesting for me. I dont think someone who is willing to Display a Lego DB5 cares about 100 or 150 Bucks (at least i dont in THIS case) because i dont see a point in a Lego DB5...a regular one...that Car is famous because of James Bond and so it needs to have the features. An F40 is fasmous because it is an F40...anyone...nothign more needed. So for me the Gadgets are indeed the selling Point. Thank you for the nice Review!

A lot of people say it doesn't look like the real db5 and I can definitely see that mainly with the front, but with the gadgets and the other angles its a well made set. The DB5 is one of my favorite cars though

This Aston Martin is gorgeous, and all of these features are incredible, however $150 price tag is a half of Technic Bugatti Chiron, which is bigger and much more complex. In addition to that, for $150 you can get a 1:18 die-cast car from Hot Wheels Elite or even decent model from AUTOart

Timothey Demchenko 1:8 is far, far larger than 1:18 though, and what's the fun if it's already built. For cheaper than $150 you could get an itelari or Tamiya car that you get to build and paint. Some folks enjoy the lego building system and I'd say it's worth it for all the gadgets.

I just bought this set. Honestly I think it does a pretty good job of replicating the iconic DB5 lines given the limitations of the construction system. I understand people thinking its ugly or isn't as curvy as it should be but its absolutely not nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Maybe I just have a better tolerance for vehicles represented in LEGO? I don't know, but in my eyes its immediately recognizable and I absolutely love the Bond specific features in the model, and I also love James Bond and Goldfinger specifically. So this will make a great addition to my LEGO collection, plus it'll be pretty sweet to show off to friends when they come over.

It’s a great looking and working model. So many inspiring techniques. But for me you nailed my two issues... you can’t do anything but display it and it’s so expensive! Also, the front wheels don’t steer. Someone needs to do a technic build of this to fix that issue. Then you could actually play with it. But the price per part wasn’t terrible really compared to other licensed sets

Just receive mine today. Once built it will be displayed with my other James Bond collectibles. Forget about the minor complaints and enjoy. The fact that LEGO created it and made the functions workable more than makes up for any quibbling. At $ 180 CDN plus taxes, well worth it to a Bond fan.

If the model was made without the features, It would not be a James Bond DB5, it would just be a DB5 and that would be even worse than the higher price tag in my opinion, at least for fans of the franchise. I am more interested in why Lego decided to make a James Bond branded model in the first place? They could have done just a simple Creator expert DB5 instead.

A DB5 isn’t like a beetle or Ferrari where everyone recognizes it or at least has some idea what they are looking at. I did a test and showed a friend who isn’t a car enthusiast a DB5 and they were like uh a generic sports car then I show them one with machine guns and they were like oh that’s a James Bond car. It just isn’t iconic enough to do its own set without James Bond gagets

I disagree with your opinion - especially when compared to the Technic Chiron and 911. Those are also display models (and not very good ones at that). You're paying for their features as well, even though they're even less obvious than the ones found here. It's true you're paying for things that can't be seen, but you are paying for the ingenuity the designer has put into it - we may never see another Lego set like this ever again.

With the seat ejector you can also just let go when you pull the trigger at the rear. It will leave the roof open, so it doesn't interfere with the ejecting of the seat. ;)

The rotating number plates is actually from the movie Goldfinger, where he is trying to evade somebody. He flicks a switch and the number plates change so they lose track of him.

I really really enjoy this set. I do I agree that the price to part ratio is pretty high, but I’m glad that i bought the set and think it’s worth the price. The engineering alone is amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Lego set with this much detail and thought put into it.

Great review but disagree in one point: without the special features it wont be a Bond Car at all. I dont think the price is based on features, its based on two Licences and that premium thing with all the marketing in my opinion. Biggest complain for me is the colour - light bluish grey is a shame for that, especially bc they say its silver...no it isnt, it only has several silver parts and the rest is grey. not more not less.

I bought it. I really like the DB5. The Lego version doesn't look that great, but trust me you'll start loving it as you build it. It's an engineering marvel the way everything came together. You'll look at it differently once you've finished.

I grew up with Bond films. Roger Moore. Absolutely loved them. Seems lately they have gotten away from the gadgets a little bit with recent films. They're there just not as heavily. That was always one of my favorite parts, as a kid. Craig is playing a great Bond, imo. Finally. Anyway, love the set. I will definitely be getting it.

I’m surprisingly underwhelmed by this set. This is something I should buying immediately, being a fan of both these neato vehicle builds and the 007 franchise. It just looks alright to me. I’m sure I’ll pick it up later. Right now all I’m thinking about is the Voltron set coming up. After than I need to lay off the Lego. Already spent almost three hundred bucks less than a month ago on the two Hogwarts castle sets and the Hogwarts express set, which I have yet to open. Once I abstain from the Lego spending perhaps this set will look much more interesting.

Well, it's not a Tamyia, Hasegawa or Revell kit, it's a Lego set with Lego limitations and possibilities. If you want a precise scale model of a DB5, you shouldn't buy Lego...

it's very hard for lego to make curved angles for its limitations and design. If it was bigger maybe it would be better to your liking but lego do there best and try what is best for them. The vehicle looks very awesome though.

It's nice to see something really different done with this series, having a movie-based vehicle with several very impressive action features. I do think it would be much more appealing for about $20 or $30 less.

This is very impressive! And I didn't think that Lego would mix with the James Bond franchise since it's too violent for kids, but this car is really not for kids, it's for the fans of both Lego and James Bond! This is definitely one of the most impressive Creator cars that Lego has ever made, may be expensive because of the action features (which are numerous and ultra cool!), but I guess most fans won't mind so much, very very cool! "Bond, James Bond." ;)

To make things clear, the F40 is 1:10 scale, and the DB5 is 1:8 Sitting at 150 USD, it means it's the currently most expensive LEGO Creator Expert car so far, it's tied with the 10241: Maersk Cargo ship, another licensed vehicle. And in Euro from Germany, it's at the same price as the Mack Anthem, another licensed vehicle but a Technic one.

I didn't like the overall look/design of the exterior of the car initially but it is growing on me more and more. ..the hidden action features are amazingly awesome though!!! The revolving plates weren't used to represent different vehicles, rather were a gadget in the one car to avoid detection at toll bridges/travelling abroad.

The original gadget as seen in Goldfinger had only 3 sides. I was mistaken and thought the JB-007 plate was used in one of the newer movies, but it was not (onscreen at least). They only ever had JB007 or 007JB plates off-duty, and Goldeneye used BMT-214A .
