Hey everyone, thank you so much for all the views and comments, I really appreciate it! A lot of people are mentioning a few inaccuracies, and I’m aware haha. I know almost nothing about trains, the only things I know, I learnt from watching Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid. This was my first attempt at a custom Lego train, and I’m happy with how it turned out. I didn’t want to spend loads of money on this project, and I completed it over a day or two. I took creative liberties by doing what I thought looked good, and I used a mix of things from different trains from different regions from different time periods. The only research I did, was looking at the pictures I showed on screen, that’s all. I did briefly start making side rods for the engine, but didn’t finish them. This train isn’t really designed to go on a track layout, as I don’t have one. Whilst I may have now reduced the effectiveness of the caboose, that was really the only thing I did very little to, and I would definitely go back and improve it further. It’s been fun learning from those who do actually know things about trains, so thanks again :)

You know, the train would look even better if you actually put side rods on it.

Those Wild West headlamps are supposed to be huge though. Edit:upon closer inspection, that train looks like it’s supposed to be a representation of a 3ft narrow gauge loco, since the drivers are part of the firebox, and the underside of that extends the whole way to just about the back. And that caboose has no top compartment, making it a waycar.
@DailyWeeklyBuilds

Yeah I definitely took my own creative liberties and disregarded real life accuracies. The term “caboose” was unfamiliar to me, only really knowing “break vans” here in the UK (and the only stuff I know about trains I learnt from Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid haha). I appreciate the insight though! It’s nice to learn more from others :)

I feel like what the train needed was a tender as well
@BattleshipOrion
@BattleshipOrion Жыл бұрын
If I may, you did an EXCELLENT job making that American 4-4-0 look like the prototype (yes, that engine WAS real, only 1:1 replica's remain though). The tender though, could use a bit more work. If you look at other resource material, you'll see that you're also missing a section for water storage aft (I'm gonna use naval terms) of the wood/coal/oil(?) bunker. It's a small section, you'd probably only need one or 2 studs shorter wood detail. And while yes accuracy may take a hit for this, I suggest (based off my own experience) hooking the tender to the engine via a draw bar instead of the magnets, and lengthening the tender by 2 blocks and trading out the train car wheels for the smaller locomotive wheels (the ones on the front pilot) and thus allowing it to pivot if you cant keep the current length. And with the boxcar, I suggest removing a single plate off the top & bottom. It'll look less like a post ww2 era AAR boxcar, and more like the 1800's wooden boxcars, which where smaller in length & height. Maybe 18 blocks long, with the use of 2x2 turn tables & appropriate base plates? Also, another note, the brake wheel should only be on one end, but it's your train. Honestly, the symmetry looks nice. And i stand by another comment, you should add side rods. 90 degrees difference from left to right, or visa versa.

This was my first attempt at a custom Lego train, and I took my own creative liberties by mixing up different things from different locomotives from different regions and time periods haha. I didn’t know about the water tank section, and I did briefly attempt making the side rods. I agree that the smaller train wheels would work better for the tender, and initially, I had those in mind. I only went with the standard train car wheels as I had more of them on hand. I do appreciate your feedback though, so thank you for watching and taking the time to comment :)

Haven't scrolled enough through the comments to see if anyone else mentioned, but if you really want to get technical with this: Attach the cylinders (Big round things you brought attention to at 9:08) to the frame of the locomotive rather than the lead truck (Also sometimes referred to as a bogey) because of course, side rods _generally_ don't move that way XD
@DailyWeeklyBuilds

Yep don’t worry, others have mentioned that, and i can’t remember if I’ve said it at this point, but I considered all options off screen 😂. This was my first time doing something like this, and I consider it version 1.0
@flyingscotsman2668
@flyingscotsman2668 Жыл бұрын
I’ve technically deleted the purpose of the caboose because they have black top parts so they can see the whole Train and they can use a break if the train is going too fast or if it’s going downhill
@DailyWeeklyBuilds
@DailyWeeklyBuilds Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight, I’m no train expert at all, I just tried something different for the looks. I have seen some break vans without the top parts, and I think that’s what I must’ve had in mind. But the caboose is the only thing I didn’t really change, so there’s room for improvements :)

0:33 Not to mention in the actual film itself the engine had a coal tender and from what i recall 6 coaches 8 goods vans and a brake van (Caboose) The toy story three video game actually went all out with various types of rolling stock being pulled by the engine in the first level

I knew the engine in the film had several more coaches etc, wasn’t aware it was a coal tender as some “source material” I looked at online had a wood tender. I never played the game myself, but it sounds fun!

When Lego trains don’t get side rods it just makes me feel a sense of annoyance I cannot fully describe. Why Lego refuses to do this on so many of their steam trains annoys me to no end. It just takes a few technic rods and pegs. Simple as that.

Hi there! Nice job on the aesthetic part but, I'm sorry, I just have to ask. Have you run it on a layout? Like, with curves and stuff? Cause I bet you my whole Lego collection it won't. The two modified carriages have the wheels too far apart. There's a reason for the floating drive wheels on the engine. The tender has one too many wheels in a row. It can negotiate turns with three wheels, but not four. Hope this helps, don't wanna be that person, but, as a fellow moc train designer, it was too much to bear.
@DailyWeeklyBuilds
@DailyWeeklyBuilds Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the feedback! No I haven’t run it on a layout with curves, I think I mentioned it in the video but my version of this train wasn’t designed with that in mind, as I simply don’t have a layout like that. It’s just for the looks on a small bit of straight track. I do appreciate the feedback though! If the day comes where I do I have an actual layout and I’d need to make further changes to it, I know which comment to look at :)
