The end you built is technically a control-car when it comes to inter-city trains, such as the TGV, ICE, Shinkansen, Acela (Gen 1, and Gen 2). they come in two types, of course, the "power-car" which is the locomotive, and the cab-control car, which is a coach with the controls at the opposite end. A cab-car, as you meant to call your cab-control car, is VERY similar to it's passenger counter parts. The Amtrak Surf-liner cab cars, Metro cab-cars, and Trinity cab-cars all have this in common. They are modified production, or retrofit versions of existing platforms, normally NOT built to facilitate the means of HSR (High Speed Rail). Cab cars also rely on the stand-alone coaches (Amtrak's double-deck cars & Amtrak's Surf-liner cars are again prime examples) to transmit power via MU (multiple unit) cables to it via each of the coaches. In the case in which cab-cars are used, almost ALL are stand-alone units that can independently be assigned to a completely different train, rather than be assigned solely to one train. More train facts...BTW, on a scale of 10, including modifications, what would you rate this set to someone looking to buy it?

You could make it different from the one by turning it into a driving van trailer. (DVT) it’s a British purpose built driving trailer they resemble locomotives specifically class 90 the 82/1 mark 3 series and class 91 for the 82/2 mark 4 series. They do not carry passengers accommodation due to health and safety rules in place at the time of construction that prohibited passengers in the leading cars that run faster than 100 miles per hour. It was believed that a train would unstable at high speeds unless pulled from the front. Instead they carried luggage and baggage.

I think you could go either way with the pantograph. In the UK there's not a lot of examples of having a driving trailer (which is UK terminology for 'cab car') on an electric train and the most well known example on the east coast route didn't have them I think. Most electric trains have motors on multiple coaches nowadays. But I think in other countries the driving trailers have pantographs.

Also, it's a bit daft to debate the realism of pantograph Vs no pantograph when there's no overhead wires in Brick Nottingham! (Not suggesting that you should put them in though.) Or even just puting a 2 length brick at the bottom of the window so the vertical lines of that bit hint at a possible door? The alterations look much better- and the lime windows being a different style helps distinguish the conductor area from the passenger area with just that bit of variety.

1) The real world heavy rail where I live in utah actually does have some of that up-down between double decker cars, so I actually really like what you've done with it. 2) I do think you should try and keep at least one of the double decker cars disability accessible. It's one of the coolest real-world improvements that Lego has been incorporating, in my opinion, as it's again reflective of the real world trains that I ride. Super cool! I'm gonna have to use some of these ideas if I ever get this train

Suggestion: will be great to add a kind of integrated door handle with a shaft and modified 1x1 plates (to hold the shaft) , close to your new window, so, the driver can help himself to go down or up into the cabin, I mean it should be integrated of the body of the train, I do not have the train yet, and I do know if you have enough room to do it! Possible silly mod, but would it be feasible to raise the pantograph up on the locomotive - at the moment it looks as if the head is lower than your double decker carriages at anything other than absolute full stretch, so the loco could never reach the overhead electric line.

Very nice upgrade. I wish Lego would include cab cars in all their standard sets so you could buy full trains (like my old Lima 125 from when I was a kid). I think if you want to reduce the limeyness maybe you could add some graffiti stickers. Do you have the sticker sheet from the friends pizza restaurant? I think the graffiti on the bin was designed for a green bin so might look good on the green train

I know you've received the "why don't you add more rail lines?" question a bunch, so I'm not here to make that comment, lol. I've heard you talk about doing some displays under the main city of Brick Nottingham though, and one of those could be a little railyard to display all of your lovely rolling stock and locos. Perhaps you could even build a little ramp up to the main train track so you could switch from one train to another without having to fiddle with all those wheels

Wow that sounds hard to do. The trains don't like much of an incline. Some of mine are quite long too so wouldn't like ANY incline. Sadly trains are only a part of my city. A glorious train yard would be great but would be too big. The floor option may still happen though!

It's not a bad idea BUT, you then would see the internal support piece and those frames are very hard to get hold of, as they were only in one set and the 1x4x2 version doesn't come in Lime!

Have you thought about getting rid of the cab door for the driver on the outside, build a foe door for the driver on the inside, and then move the arrow 4 studs closer to the cockpit? You’d have to change the lime green 1x6 curved slope but I’m sure if you wanted to you could pull it off

I'm not sure about British high-speed-trains like the intercity 225, but the Acela in the U.S. Has 2 pantographs on each power car, and when the train is moving, only one pantograph on each power car is up, with the pantographs that were up going down and the ones that were down going up when the train switches directions. Maybe you should think about mounting the pantograph from this set onto the locomotive in a down position to model that. I think it would look good.

I take it a "driving van trailer" is essentially your version of a cab car, in that it's a passenger car with a driving cab at one end that's MUed to the locomotive so the driver/engineer can control the train from the other end? But presumably in the 225's case it looks more like a class 91 than a regular passenger car.

13:46 it actually is realistic. in canada there is a public transportation line call GO and not only do the have the same up-down up-down motion, but its green. although the cars are all double decker, they are not dome cars, with there only being windows on the side. still i think the two are rather similar, although im not sure if GO has been implementing domes to their cars. Plus the back cars, old cars or new, are cab cars.

Despite the drastic look of the lime green, doing the double decker gives its bombardia look, even if you do stick with the glass for all the coaches, but I think you could het away an say some money making additional coaches like sleepers and regular seating if you don't do the glass roof

I would possibly remove another lime 2x2 piece, move the windows forward and ad a door back, if you manage to make them half a stud back I think it would be even better. I don't like how the side grids are made, if you manage to attach them someway to the ceiling the space could be used for a bike rack or to fit in a refreshments cart.

You could perhaps move the black arrow section forward by 2 studs if you replace the lime 42022 pieces on the top with 61678. #toomuchlime

Funny you should say that. I've been messing around with the cockpit pieces and changing the side slopes really helps with a number of other modifications, including less lime!

They only came in the Volcano Supply Helicopter 60123, and even then only two. They are hard to get hold of, for sure!

@13:50. Might not be realistic to Lego people. But in real life it used to be almost standard to have at least one observation car or two in line. Here from the USA Santa Fe had a lot of Dome observation cars for when its diesel units came out. This honestly just reminds me of them. Don't know why your saying its not very realistic in less its from the legos persons view. Because here in the usa. It just seemed standard it felt like after you read storys and videos of them. Almost every steam train had one at the very end then the diesel units had the Dome observation. I believe the electric versions units have the whole car almost out of glass and then if you are on vacation or something. They have some open sided excursion cars that look very different from every other one you see.

Because if it was i don't know of any uk trains with dome cars or any that i told you about. But still regardless. I love this idea. Its great to see a spin on this train. I have no plans for another steam train yet. It is not hyper real UK as Nottingham is nowhere near the coast, for a start. We do drive on the left though!

But again still great as all ways. Keep it up. And have a good day! Also back to the train thing. Maybe a flying Scotsman or mallard? Or if you want to be different maybe a American steam locomotive? Or diesel? Honestly in the usa we got some cool designs in trains just like you guys got in the uk. Lol! XD just wondering when you might add another steam train one day and its ok to take your time. Ps as a other load for your long train or for the steam engine maybe a steam tractor?
