LEGO Harry Potter Weasley's Wizard Wheezes Comparison | 76422 vs 75978 vs 10217

Today I wanted to take a look at both LEGO Harry Potter Weasley's Wizard Wheezes buildings side by side, to see how it compares to the large Diagon Alley set from 2020, and even the original play set Diagon Alley from 2011.
This new set takes elements from both past versions of the wizard street, and combines them into a new system, that while not amazing on it's own, has a lot of potential...

Didn't realize the considerable size difference until I saw them now side-by-side. It would be cool to see the larger set modified to include all the interior product details that came with the new small one. Like you mentioned, that would be a best-of-both-worlds combination. Also curious how the Owl Post set looks combined with the Diagon Alley set, though I feel like the other buildings would dwarf it.

Damn the size different is so big :O I honestly prefer the sticker face (looks more like a weasley face) compared to the brick one (which looks a bit off to me)

Personally, I think it’s a good idea. I mean, not everyone is going to have room for a full set of diagon alley, or afford the set either, and some won’t want every building, so being able to pick and choose which buildings you want to get is a good thing I think, I’ll definitely be getting the Weasley’s wizard wheezes building rather than getting the full set as I don’t want all the buildings and I don’t have the room for the full set either as I also collect a lot of transformers

I feel like a lot of the people that were blindly trashing the new set before it even came out are in their own little bubble where they think everyone can afford every massive set and that they'd even want to. Like some people would rather go for something smaller and cheaper. It's like complaining about Lego releasing Star Wars ships in a smaller size. Yes the UCS Slave I was a thing but a lot of people don't have the space or money for it and would rather go for something like the 20th Anniversary Slave I

The castle and grounds they’re releasing is also a good alternative if you don’t want to go into the modular sets or try to get the larger version of the castle which is expensive already and only going to become more expensive as it’s a retired set now. I was lucky and got it on sale

That's what the problem is some people think everyone have the 4 and change for the big set but they dont, so if a cheaper smaller alternative is available well it's going to be snatched up.

I wish they'd have either released nocturn alley or the opposite side of the street for the original diagon alley as there are still loads of shops they could have made, rather than these smaller builds!

If they keep going with the smaller ones I hope the Leaky Cauldron and Knockturn Alley are some of the first they do, there’s such a great opportunity to expand the variety

@@HollyOnFilm I would rather they did those as attachable modulars for 75978 though, instead of for these play scale sets. Maybe they will end up doing both. The new Gringotts looks more compatible in scale with the diagon alley set, so they might continue to release add ons in the future. It's just me being selfish wanting them to focus on the things I want, when I know these new sets are targeted for a younger audience, and are cheaper and more accessible to more people, so I get it. I'm just gutted cos I'd love a huge modular diagon alley system like with the creator expert line!

I was really hoping these would be more similar in size so you could add new buildings to the (semi) original Diagon Alley. Given they are priced similarly, the difference is a real shame.

I have always planned on getaway the D2C Diagon alley. My only thought about buying this one instead is could the inclusion of the owl post mean that there will be additional buildings in future sets. If every future set includes one building from the D2C and one new building maybe we’ll end up with both sides of Diagon alley, even though they’re smaller. I’m going to wait a little longer and see what the next building released is and if it comes with another smaller building

Looks amazing next to the gringotts, I heard new gringotts will be in scale with “the original diagon alley” or will it be with the new one? I guess it should be in scale with the old one since they’re both d2c

Great comparison of the two Weasley Wizarding Wheezes. By putting them side by side, you can tell how much smaller the new one is. If I were to get one, it would be the new one, because $450 for the D2C Diagon Alley set is well out of my budget.

Great review Holly. Question: do you think the Sept Gringotts will be designed with 759978 or 76422 in mind in terms of display compatibility. I know the new Gringotts also has the cart system but that’s not a problem for us as we’ll look to slot it under the old faithful Bunnings table as we did with the Second Task set 😊 seeing the 2 WWWs side by side is making us reconsider the Big Bang vs Drip Feed question and which way we go

I did eventually get the big set, even fot it before the price went up. But, I always thought that it should have been 4 individual sets. Would have been easier to pull the trigger and get them one at a time. I do hope they continue making more sets for the alley. My plan is to get the new one and use the extra products and figures to flesh out my original set. Might swap out the weasly head for the new one as it looks better. As for the little corner building, I think I'll place it behind the Nocturn Alley arch and get a Borgins and Burk sign to add to it. That will make it really cool.

I’m here after seeing the new Olivander’s set. It looks far better than the 2020 model solely for the fact that the stickers don’t split the name sign in the middle. And on top of that, you get all these amazing wand pieces! 😱 So my final verdict is, buy the Diagon Alley, sell the pieces for Olivander’s and buy the new Olivander’s set this summer. Then bricklink the stickered pieces from the 2023 Weasley shop to furnish the 2020 model (I personally don’t care for the figures besides Fred and George).

Love the side by side with the original diagon alley! While I like that the new one added a lot of minifigures they definitely brought down the piece count

I honestly felt this way about pre-modular wizarding world in general. I don’t know why they decided to pivot…. Again… halfway through. I wish they would do every set with a consistent plan across film. Modular still needs a few things. We still need a goblet of fire maze in general, durmstrang ship refresh, beauxbatons refresh. So many things have still not been done in this world but they keep half remaking sets inconsistently. And honestly….. design a $1.5k hogwarts with everything in standard, not mini size, and I would totally buy that. Even at $2k if it was a fully replicated hogwarts model to fit standard minifigs. I didn’t get the other one because they were 1 tile tinyfigs

The individual Weasley Wizard Wheezes looks like it came from Wish. It may technically be the same building as the one from the larger Diagon Alley set, but it's so much worse on every metric that it looks like a cheap knock-off rather than actual Lego. If the individual set had come first it may have done pretty well, but it'll be a tough sell when the Diagon Alley version is so good and technically only slightly more expensive.

While the D2C version is obviously better, I have to commend the plaset for actually having a more accurate exterior with the third floor not missing and the store being more squarish. I think I'll move the original one to a square baseplate and use the pieces on the play set to extend the D2C set!

Slightly offtopic, but I did love the old Diagon Alley shop sets (4719 and 4720) because they showed you that you don't necessarily need 77000 pieces to build a Diagon Alley shop. In recent years LEGO seems to prefer making huge and very expensive sets, hardly making any smaller ones, which means that fewer and fewer people can afford it. Back around 2000 the number of small, medium and large sets was more or less equal.
