Both MK and Monkey King are the embodiment of chaos, MK’s very existence was stated to shift the balance of everything, resulting in the destruction of the universe. So, the only way MK could save the universe was through sacrifice, aka himself. Even if Monkey King sacrificed himself, it wouldn’t do anything and his death would’ve been in vain. Monkey King and MK’s relationship is so deep that Monkey King was willing to sacrifice the world itself in order to protect MK, which is why he screamed and cried when MK died.
