This little boat deserves its own nameplate. Christened as the James Caird, Shackleton survived an 800 mile journey in it to South Georgia. It has been preserved to this day, and is arguably just as important to the story of Endurance as Endurance herself. My wife and I loved the recent National Geographic documentary. While we don't have room for the whole Endurance model, I'll probably buy a little James Caird off the secondhand market. Thank you Tiago!!

I went on a school trip to Dulwich College where the James Caird is. It was such an amazing experience and learnt so much. They had an area specifically for the boat with loads of information around it, and a tiny museum with many smaller artefacts from the Endurance.

It's really annoying that this isn't included as part of the Endurance set. In general, I *hate* time limited GWP sets that are specific to certain sets. Sometimes they're sets that I'd really like to have, despite having no interest in the main set (e.g. the treasure chest for the Dungeons and Dragons set) and sometimes they are so intrinsically linked to the main set that they should really just have been a part of it (e.g. this set or the Eiffel's Apartment that was a limited GWP with the Eiffel Tower). It just feels like no one wins when Lego does this. Non specific GWP are a great addition that makes you feel like you're getting a little extra something when choosing to buy directly from Lego but these time limited set-specific GWPs just leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth. If you're lucky enough to get the set, you worry if you should build it or sell it because it's so rare. If you miss out, it feels like you're getting a bad deal for your Lego purchase. If you don't like the main set because it's either not your style or it's just too big then you feel angry that you can't just buy the small set on its own. I mean seriously, who wins and feels good about Lego and their purchase with these? For me, I've asked my wife for Endurance for Christmas but she likely won't be able to order at midnight so I'm worried that by the time she places the order in the morning, this set will likely have sold out as often seems to be the case with these limited GWPs. :(

Ernest Shackleton is a distant relation of mine he is my uncles great grandfather and my uncle still has a ton of Ernest's stuff it was so cool to hold books with Ernest's personal notes in them! It felt like reaching through history

I’m not sure it should have been part of the bigger set as it’s a different scale! Having 2 lifeboats at different scales in the same set would be confusing, unless the scale is dramatically different such as in the Saturn V set.

Luv this set and ordered on day release and a little bit of trivia all the beautiful details of this model is pretty much owed to the photographer of the expedition Frank Hurley Sydney born Aussie 🇦🇺🦘who’s photos and film of the expedition is well documented, being an Australian makes me proud to know. That's because it is minifigure scale, not microscale like the ship. I don't like microscale at all. I grew up with the Black Seas Barracuda 6285 and it was minifigure scale. Imagine how great the LEGO Endurance would have been if a minifigure of Shackleton could stand on the deck.

I think the reason why this wasn’t part of the main set is because it’s not in scale with the Endurance. Aside from glorified minifig display stands like in the Batman UCS sets, I don’t think they ever included 2 different scales in one set, have they?

I went online three hours after launch, and the GWP was sold out. So, my response for Lego with I will never buy the endurance because you really have to have Shackleton and his photographer as part of the main build. So what does Lego really gain by artificially causing rarity of the GWP?

Great review. And exactly how I feel about the gwp scheme. It’s all so disappointing and sad for the average fan. Only a very lucky few and those with means can imagine owning it. Leaving every regular person to not experience it. This type of gatekeeping mentality is exactly the opposite of what a toy company like Lego should espouse.

Great review tiago for the fair comments. Personally, not having this as part of the main endurance set might be because they didnt want to have 2 models in different scales in the same set (i mean that kinda makes sense, right?

I don't know, UCS sets always have minifigures and the scales don't match at all, not too sure that was a concern at all. They simply didn't consider including it in the first place is my guess.

@TiagoCatarino I think it's debatable , a scaleless name plaque isn't in the same universe as the model and those figures (as part of the plaque) aren't supposed to interact directly with the model. While in the gwp boat case the scale of the models don't match.

​@@ericlego321 I have to be honest, I don't think a single person in Lego remotely thought about this reason or debated it, like a lot of the justifications fans make up to explain away things that are clearly done for profit. You know why they do exclusive GWPs, there is zero reason why this one would be different and would need a justification for being sold separately. Especially considering most GWPs are the correct scale.

hey Tiago, the head of the figures cannot be bricklink easily, the heads are from extremely expensive sets only, so it would cost ya at least 100€ to bricklink it.

@bluecko72 no, they are licensed, and they come: 3626cpb3308 beloc (130€ set) or pierce (500€ set) and 3626cpb3256 gimli (500€ set). but someone got hold of them already, so they go for 5-8€ bucks each. still a lot.

GWP are a FOMO Scam. They can be a free as add on but Lego should also sell them and not make them limited. That's why, GWP should be criticized and not featured

As much as I dislike the practice, it's not a scam, it's just Lego adding more money to their pile by playing on people's greed and fear. If you don't like the way Lego does business, support the alternative brands or take up a different hobby. The problem is all the people who criticize Lego but then hand them big bundles of cash anyway. That gives Lego zero reason to change :(

Lego is a company. They exist to make money, not make fans happy. And since they're making billions every year, why would they want to change what they're doing? That said, some of Lego's competitors (Funwhole, Pantasy, etc.) have different business models and charge way, way less for sets of the same quality as Lego.

This is one of the reasons that lego isnt as cool as it was before. We dont see themes with big and small sets. Now we get gwp that are basically mandatory to have a complete set. These kinds of products are the ones made for testing the audience. If people go nuts and buy thousands of these ships on black friday so they can get the boat then lego will continue doing this bs. Please, be concious and dont buy this set.. I loved this boat but im not supporting this behaviour.

Good review. I probably wouldn’t have bought the ship without the GWP. I was up bright and early ordering on release, so will be one of the lucky few. The ship alone is just a nice ship, the lifeboat tells the story. It should be more widely available.

Look guys, LEGO does this to stop people waiting until the main set goes on sale at a discounted price. Which it will. It will probably be a lot cheaper in three months. So you choose, do you want the GWP and willing to pay a premium now? LEGO is overpriced until it goes on sale at a discounted price.
