First rule of Crits.....know the course. Second rule....crank length really does not affect pedal strikes as much as you think. I have seen plenty of people going down with 165. It is all about knowing how to pedal in a corner.

changing to 165mm will be a great change! I have made the switch to them all, and not only do they fit me better, but I do like the confidence of a bit more clearance through the corners.

remember the crank arm is a lever. the longer the lever the greater the power. try 170mm first.

172.5 definitely seems longer than you want/need for crits, but 170 vs. 165? Not sure.
