After parte 1… this is a MUST! Fantastic vision and presentation of the most amazing lens Leica made - 8 element 35mm with googles. Sadly I will never be able to use it in my iiif… but I already love the f2 50mm Summitar look… it also gives a wonderful rendition that is a bit better than reality… like a painting…

Curious if you have used the Light Lens Lab 35mm f2, which attempts to replicate the Leica 8 element. I have found it to be quite magical. The flare is a little different but it does use flint glass and wide open you get a excellent glow, as well as the highlights do seem to be retained even with overexposure. It'd be interesting to see your perspective on this.

Steven, Kimura Ihei was indeed a Leica photographer. I discovered his work online about 2 years ago. However so much of his work remains out of print. He visited a particular japanese province more than 20 times. Maybe it was Akita. I am not sure. He might have well used the lens since many of his images seem to be taken with a 35mm.

There was an exhibition of his photography in Tokyo 2 years ago, and it was a color negative film he shot in Paris. I am amazed that he may was using 8-elements lens at that time, because the colors are so similar.

summicron 35 v1 is great. But today it is very hard to find one with good quality. And the price goes crazy. So unless you are a collector, a new modern summicron is more practical. When I was in Tokyo, Leica Ginza refused to CLA my summicron 35 v1, they don't do services for old M also.

Thank you thank you for sharing your thoughts on this excellent lens. Years ago I was bitten by the Leica bug, my first serious camera was a Leica M3 with a 1.5 50 mm Summarit lens. I loved that camera but I found it very limited. Years later I borrowed a Leica M6 with a 35 F2 Sumicron and compared it with my Nikon FE with a 35 mm F2 AIS lens. When I examined the slides with 100 power microscope I could see very little difference. The only difference I can really see was that the Sumicron and had less flair. Not trying to take anything away from Leica it is a niche camera which is not mass produced like the Nikon. The lens that blew both of them away was the 55 mm F3.5 micro Nikkor the sharpness of that lens was incredible and I paid $50 for it. I also enjoyed seeing my depth of field in the SLR viewfinder which the Leica doesn’t show. But you can’t beat the Leica for being unobtrusive when doing things like street photography. However the new mirrorless cameras can now do silent photography and adapt most vintage lenses to their bodies. That’s where I find my older Nikon 1 V1 and J5 to be excellent performers in this genre. Regards Gerry
