What are your thoughts on the Leica M9 in 2021, almost 2021 actually? 2. Whilst it's cool to have new cameras come out so often, how much influence do these "new cameras" have, on the photos you create? 3. What is your primary photography speciality: portraits, street, life in general or whatever else. And if you've got any video suggestions or topics you'd like to hear from me next, then let me know too.

@@oliscurra 3 things - 1) I just don't like there is "m" - video button there waiting for accident especially when I don't even need video capability AND with extra weight as result of that! 2) I want it even simpler, even though I am a beginner - I don't want/need a 'live view' when I shoot M as a beginner - I want to make sure I know exactly what and why I have certain setting so I can learn better 3) the color rendition, I think I have seen enough of M9 sample images and I am not a guy who will and can do any crazy/serious lightroom post work, so M9 straight out even as JPEG seems just so much better, at least very special for me.

Andrew Shih - To be honest, I personally wouldn’t mind some video capabilities at times. It would help me out a little every now and then with these videos. Interesting thoughts on the colour rendition though. I think you will notice, that even the song files have a strong character to it when compared to newer Leica models. The M9 is without a doubt one of the most awesome cameras in terms of character. Some will hate it and others love it. At first I wasn’t sure myself, then on the second day I had it, I shot on a sunny day and it was clear that I was going to like this camera a lot. Looking forward to seeing your photos perhaps... Hi Olivier, first of all love your review and your photos..! I mainly shoots portraits and streets. I currently own an X-Pro 3 with a Voigtlander 35mm F1.4 MC. However I felt that I might jump in to the Leica M system and about to purchase my first Leica M, a discounted display M-E 220 that still cost quite a lot. I actually do have a question about the sensor corrosion issue that I've heard so much about. Did you have that problem on your M9 and have you had your sensor replaced? Is it something that I need to worry about? (since I lived in a quite humid and hot country) And is there a way to know wether the product I am about to purchase might be affected, like the model number or the production date? Truly sorry if the question is too long. Thanks beforehand. Keep up the great videos! Cheers :)

The M9 is more than relevant, so is the M8. Love them. Supergreat tools for the everyday photographer. Excellent work. Great compos. I have to say that the framelines and slowed down experience lead to more perfect compositions in the first place than you are able to achieve with any other kind of camera (maybe a TLR is similar but you are not that much connected to the world around you anymore).

@@oliscurra I had the M9 9 years ago and this was the first digital camera which I found was a real pleasure to use. I found that with a 35 it was the perfect street camera - it was always in my hand or in my pocket. I now use the M10 mostly. It has a better dynamic range and is perfect for landscape photo. However - the laquered brass on M9 is more comfortable in my hands, and it feels a little less pretentious than its newer sibling - which has a more industrial slippery finish.

arne jw kolstø Yeah I understand what you mean about the M9. I’m now primarily shooting the M10-P - and I love it. Yet at the same time, the M9 is still around. Character vs Clinical... Oliver, I do appreciate your response and I’d come to a similar conclusion even before reading it. I’m going to keep the SL2. Contrary to the cliche, the bird currently in my hand is much cheaper than the in the bush. And if, as you say, the M10-R is as “clinical” in rendition as the SL2, than aside from weight, the SL2 is the better M. Superior EVF and the flexibility of AF in a pinch. I loved the 246 but did want the flexibility to capture in color when the mood struck me. The M9’s rendering in B&W will serve my needs and will support my occasional color capture whims at the same time. And I’m still entranced by the CCD sensor and how renders in either format. Now if the M11 springs forth with new bells and whistles, that will be another consideration for another time. Thank you Jimmy for the lovely comment. I've been working a on a few different looks over the past few months to be honest and that is one of them. I am still not 100% on the skin tone tbh, but it's getting there. Generally for those kinds of shots, what's really important is that your key light and your fill light is very soft. Then I add in an s-curve, but it's got to be in the same zone where the subject is. After that I reduce my blacks quite a bit. Don't know if that made sense. Oliver, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Verbally informative as well as visually. The images were incredible. My favorite camera store just found one for me and the price, condition, make it a no brainer. Currently this would be joining my M7, M Typ 246, and my SL2. To many M’s. So I considering to courses of action. Trade the typ 246 for the 9 and keep the SL2 OR trade both the typ 246 and the SL2 for the M10R. Bottom line, the M7 and M9 are staying. Share your thoughts please. Chaps Out
@oliscurra3 жыл бұрын
So my thoughts are, M7 & M9 is a great combination. I have not used the M10R nor the SL2. My M10-P however (other than the sensor) from a usage perspective is very similar to the M10R. I love it. It's a great camera. The M9 in terms of handling will be a step down from the M 246. Specifically in digital features. The sensor makes up for that...in spades. So the question is, if you go out to shoot, what are the themes or motivating factors for you to take another camera (ie SL2 or M10-P) instead of the M7 or the M9 on that day?
@chapsibnnoel36263 жыл бұрын
Oliver, first and foremost, thank you for your quick and thought provoking response. Ironically I was still considering my reasoning for keeping my current kit or examining other options just before opening your message. Some history - I purchased the M 246 specifically because of my love for B&W images. And it did not/has not disappointed. Where there became an issue were two things. First, my discovered love of shooting a rangefinder. Secondly, that the SL2 isn’t a rangefinder. 11 years into photography this was my first experience with the rangefinder format. And now all that I can say WRT the rangefinder approach is, where have you been all my life!? Like you, my M7 & 9 will be willed to some deserving family member with the threat of being haunted for eternity if they hurt or sell my babies. Concur with you, the M9 techno wise is a step down from the newer M 246, but that CCD sensor is awesome. And your B&W images shared in your video where equally ‘awesome’. I’ve kept the SL2 for those occasions when I might need and or want to shoot fast. But honestly, I make myself shoot it. And then, I try to make myself like the experience of shooting it and the images that I get from it. In truth, great images. The EVF and live view are insane. But for me - that’s too much money for just going out on an occasional ‘Sunday’ ride. But my real argument for or against keeping the vaunted SL2 are these. 1. It’s heavy and I’m older. Facts: It ain’t gonna get any lighter and I’m not going to get any younger. 2. And this is what it really comes down to - Clinical vs Character. The SL2 creates beautiful ‘clinical’ images. The M creates ‘character’ images. I’m not a pro photog. I’m a Theologian, an Educator, and a retired U.S. Navy chaplain who has been blessed with a hobby that I love. And a iPhone will never satisfy my palate. I have developed very demanding tastes and Leica has quenched my cravings. You are an incredible artist and very kind human being for taking time to help others. May GOD grant unto you and yours continued happiness and success. Chaps

@@chapsibnnoel3626 Hi Chaps, it's so nice to hear a little about you and your back ground. I'd love to hear more and also see some of your photos. So for me the M9 has received a lot less love since the M10-P. It's not so much that the camera, but the fact that with the EVF I nail the noctilux focus every single time. I never miss now. That for me is huuuuuge. I used it much less on my M9 than on the M7 because on the M7 with film not being so absolutely flat, I could get away with a slight bit off focus. The M10-P, has a great sensor to post process your files after. However the character is a lot less subtle than the M9, by a long shot. So from that perspective, if you trade in your SL2 for an M10R - in terms of image quality you would trade in clinical and receive something closer to clinical than to character. All you'd change is the bodies. What speaks for the M10R? If whatever speaks for the M10R, speaks less loudly in lieu of clinical image output, the offering of SL2, might mean some new glass instead for the M's... Look forward to hearing from you Chapss Cheers, Olivier PS: He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.

(Mir kond übrigens oo im Dialäkt odr uuf Düütsch chätta… 😊). Do you know there are some series of the M9 out, the Kodak sensor has a corrosion problem. They fixed it for a long time also being totally out of warranty for free. Did you ensure on purchase you already got a fixed one? Just asking, just in case they’re running out of spare sensors and you once might face that problem.

Ciao Roland, ich schriebä eher uf Englisch. Dänn chönd anderi eventuell au mit redä. First of all thanks for writing. I would say it is a combination between the M9 sensor and my presets. I find the M9 raw files to have more contrast than other digital Leica files. It also has a stronger purple tent. In my opinion generally not reflecting reality. It is this what I love about the M9. When I bought the M9, the personal sold it to me said the sensor was replaced. However they may have replaced it with another corrosion prone CCD sensor. Or the guy never actually replaced the sensor. I generally shoot wide open so I rarely see this. However it is rather annoying knowing that one day the sensor might be entirely unusable. And as far as I know like no longer has the sensor is it available nor would they put in a CCD sensor in the first place. How do you like your M10? It’s essentially very similar to the M10-P which I used to own. LG, Oli

@@oliscurra I'm a total Nikon guy, still have my FM2n (and its a film in, but don't ask me what's on it 😄). Where do you develop and scan film? ARS-Imago? Or can you recommend another lab specialised in developing and perfect scanning? I still have everything at home for developing film myself, even an enlarger, but no longer a darkroom. To answer your question: if I had to choose which system I get rid off, I would keep the M10 stuff because of the experience. Besides: waiting for my Z9 ;) Nikon nailed it with the Z mount and the S lenses are awesome. So, why keeping the M10 and lenses if I had to choose? Well, if it comes to photography and lens characteristics, IMHO nothing can beat the M lenses. The system is tiny, I can take the (all M) Summicon 90, Lux 50 + 35, Cron 50 (made 1996), Elmarit 28. My dream camera: M11, 24 megapixel, 16 stops dynamic range BSI sensor, 16 bit DNG, with switchable optical/OLED viewfinder like on the X-100's, two SDXC slots (or 1 + internal), USB-C port. I am a totally against megapixel mania. They may make a M11-R having 60 megapixel, I don't care and get for sure the 24 megapixel one.

Beautiful photos mate. I'm considering M9 for myself. I already have M6 from about a month and I love it. It is my first trip to analogue. I have also a7rii, but I photograph with it less and less - it's a low light monster though.
@oliscurra4 жыл бұрын
The M9 is really awesome, however one thing which it certainly is not, is a low light monster like your a7rii, unless you're lugging a tripod around. :) There are varying degrees of acceptance among M9 shooters as to what the max ISO is for "usable photos". Personally if it's going to be colour, then I am around ISO 800 as the max. If it's going to be a black and white conversion I tend to aim for 1600, but also go to 2500. How often do you plan on shooting colour / black and white above iso limits... If you haven't bought your M9 yet, then I'm happy to send you some low light dngs at higher ISO's. Send me a DM on my instagram olivier_sm and I'll send you a dropbox link or something if you like. How are you finding your M6? My next video is actually about my M7 and my M10-P. ETA about a week...

@@oliscurra I'm perfectly aware of these ISO limitations. I got somewhat obsessed before buying M6 to read everything I found regarding M series. I was in fact debating with myself M6 vs M9 vs M240 (M10 is out of reach). M6 is my first analogue experiance like, ever. Street photographer hiro_ig101 actually suggested it to me, to try out film Leica, since it's ever getting more and more expensive - so it's like an investment after all. I fell in love with putting film inside it (not so much with the cost of Portra and Tri-x), waiting for results to come. I will message you on ig (my account - @wojtek.lebek) for these test shots. I still think 800ISO is somewhat good enough for my, somewhat, hobby purposes.

Well done! I’m in a place where I’m looking at Ms but have a very limited budget so used is where I’d be headed. I do wish you had commented on what seems (from my research) the elephant in the room - sensor degradation. You purchased in 2016; was the sensor new or original? How did you deal with the issue when you were looking? Finally, with great images such as yours and the sort of use you put the camera to (family, travel, it seems) what benefits would the M10-P get you? It doesn’t seem practical from what you say. I ask because, of course, that’s where my options lie - used more expensive M10 (or others) or the M9.
@oliscurra4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, great to hear from you.🙂 So here's the thing about my sensor. It has some degradation. This is a little odd, because when I bought it, I am pretty certain it was said to have been replaced. I didn't check the firmware or anything of the sort. What I've since learnt (I stand to be corrected as I read it in a forum and it's not from Leica directly), when you replace the sensor you are given a few choices, what to replace it with - one of the options being a like for like - ie a sensor which will degrade again. I will at one point go to Leica, to have my M9 sensor replaced and will then get a direct answer from them. For me what is absolutely clear is, I'd want the sensor which has the same colour science to it. That's what makes the M9, the M9. In terms of the M10-P, the primary benefits are, same body as my M7, accurate focussing for my Noctilux in challenging situations, high iso, an adequate screen (the M9's isn't great) and transfer to my smart phone via Wifi. If you've got a limited budget, then I would look at M9's with firmware v 1.210. I believe those are the sensors which no longer corrode, however it's best to get in touch with a Leica retailer instead of me or other guy from online forums (despite some being very knowledgable). What camera(s) are you coming from to M?
@David-my3uu4 жыл бұрын
Olivier SM Thanks for the follow up, excellent points on switching and I really appreciate the sensor analysis. I have currently two great film cameras - the Bessa R2 as my rangefinder (I envy your M7!) and the wonderful Nikon F3. I also have the Leica D-lux typ 109 which is a great travel/pocket camera and with which I have been very pleased, both using it in manual and auto. I’m trying the digital cl and like its evf and focus peaking assist (I wear glasses), though it’s not a real rangefinder, maybe in the end that doesn’t matter. I have some Voightlander lenses for my Bessa so I think a digital M of some sort is my next stop in the non-film world, if I decide not to stay with the cl. I’m not a pro so my photos are just family and travels. Plus, I’m not into too many pixels- 24 would be max as I think the closer to the film result, as the M9 ccd seems to offer, is what would please me most. Thanks again for your insights and info - your M9 looks to have served you well as an intro and likely will for me also. You’ve got a new subscriber and I’ll look forward to seeing where your own rangefinder journey takes you.

I am a very big fan of the Leica summilux-M 35mm/1.4 asph and the Zeiss C Sonnar T* 1,5/50 ZM. What about you?

don`t need another camera if you are owner of M9

Really great video! It made me want the m9 even more. My only critique is that the ASMR whispering/talking while you showed images was a bit uncomfortable to listen to.
@oliscurra4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Aleksander and also the critique. One of my mates mentioned it to me as well. Still figuring out a good sound setup to be honest,. It doesn't help that when I recorded that bit, it was past midnight - hence the whispering. Lesson learned. :) I can really recommend the M9 though. What's your current camera?

A very basic beginner's guide.

I guess so, but definitely wasn’t supposed to be a guide or similar. Just an ode to an almost 12 year old camera. What do you shoot?

Besser wäre in Deutsch.

@wolusylvester17313 жыл бұрын
Kompliment.
