The updated camera is nice and very tempting. If I get one later this year, I’ll still keep my silver SL2. In hand, the new SL3 feels great. I prefer the new power button, much faster turn on time, new info display (the info tags on the screen can have a transparent banner, instead of the screen-hogging black one (hopefully this will trickle down to the SL2 with a firmware update). I also like the multifunction handgrip.

Even my associate is converted after using it and seeing the results in C1. We just ordered two more to replace my SL2 and her A7RVs. I’ll hang on to my SL2-S for now. Love that camera. Bit puzzled though why there’s no Content Authentication? Could it be…an SL3-P down the road? Would loved to have internal storage too.

As polished as the experience might be, I have trouble understanding why there is so many limitations on the SL3. The biggest one in my opinion being the burst rate. 15fps is nice and all, but it's with locked focus. If you want full quality RAW files, you need to reduce it to 4 frames per second, and if you want to hit that 5fps burst you need to go to 12bit files. Why? Is it a limitation of the processor? Why was Sony able to do 10fps with uncompressed 14bit RAW files 5 years ago with basically the same sensor? This makes me kind of uneasy, especially looking at the price of the SL3. It also makes me a little worried about the S1RII. Yes, Leica doesn't much care about spec sheets, but they have their loyal customer base so they can walk it off no problem. Lumix though? They're going to be compared to the A7RV the moment the camera drops and if it's limited to 4fps with AF it will not be good looking.

I ordered the SL3 early and got it the day it released (to my surprise). I'm just testing my Sony A7RV against the SL3 in some street shots. I have started to use a Voigtlander APO 35mm f/2 on both to compare both of them in the street. The A7RV holds up well but the colours on the SL3 are crazy better out of raw and jpeg. I can definitely tweak the Sony but it's just more fun shooting the SL3. Then I put the amazing Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM on my A7RV and the subtle but powerful Leica APO-Summicron-SL 35mm f/2 on the Leica SL3 and shot at f/2 on both. Immediately I was reminded why I shoot Leica M and SL and put the Sony down the next trip. I love the A1 for wildlife but I will probably sell the A7RV and buy a 21mm APO SL. Now I intend to compare my venerable SL2 to the SL3 for daytime and landscape. I know what will come out of this from shooting my M11 at night for street photography but the SL2 is just reliable that I've grown attached to it. I think I'm keeping the SL2 for a backup and for manual focus. If anything, the SL3 made me appreciate how truly well-executed the SL2 really was, despite the challenging autofocus. I think I have a soft spot for the SL2, similar to my feelings for my first digital M (Leica M typ 246 Monochrom) that I can't seem to part with.

Thanks Hugh. I have never commented on one of your videos but have watched quite a few. I have to say what I love about your videos is the proper use of language (too much in some cases even for my liking but I am picky ;-)). Also your videos are always very well produced. I do have a few qualms with this vid in particular: 1. You say your photography is evolving past the capabilities of the SL2 - I say bollocks. Let's be honest there are probably 0.1% of real photographers who are limited by an actual camera. (and here in the next video you can say that and then plug your photowalks to improve the listeners skills ;-)) But please be honest and state it as it is: Your upgrade is your love for Leica and GAS. 2. You like many others keep saying that L mount has 80 lenses to chose from and that this is an advantage over Sony, which it's not, as only Panasonic lenses are not available for Sony, whereas Sigma is available on E mount. And of the L mount glass, how many are basically identical clones, Sigma, Panasonic, Leica 35/50 1.8 and 2.0s are basically all the same. (don't get me wrong as a consumer your love the selection, but state it how it is). 3. One thing I like you mentioned and have not seen in other reviews was the lack of the manual assist focus aid that you hoped Leica would add (like Nikon Zf) and they were unable to implement it due to lack of electronic contact between manual lenses and the body. This, I do not believe is accurate, when I had the Zf I used M mount lenses with focus confirmation - as all reading is happening at sensor level. (unless I misunderstood your comment). Anyway thanks for taking the time to review.
@3BMEP8 ай бұрын
Jan, thanks for writing. I take umbrage at your suggestion that I’m being less than honest, as you apparently know me better than I know myself; you conflate precisely what I said about L-mount glass vs Sony with what OTHERS have said. NOT what I have said. As for my language: thank you?

@chrisalberti8 ай бұрын
Very informative, thank you, as you answered my question about whether to upgrade from the SL2. I was particularly interested in your favorable comments for the Sony A7R5. I took up wildlife/birds-in-flight in earnest last year, and as you know BIF are beyond the capabilities of the autofocus on my SL2 coupled with my Leica 100-400 (starts at f/9 with the 1.4 TC). In need of a "tool" for BIF, I first rented the S5II body but found the autofocus inconsistent at best when shooting BIF using my Leica 100-400 (with or without the TC). I then rented the A7R5/Sony f/5.6-6.3 100-600. I was delighted with the results and purchased the A7R5/Sony 100-600/ Sony 24-70 as my wildlife/BIF/video kit. Is it fair to say the S5II is the DNA in the SL3's new autofocus system? If so, then is it also fair to say that the SL3 would be a major upgrade to the SL2 for video (as you point out) but a modest upgrade for photography, not on a par with the best from Sony for BIF and other fast-moving subjects demanding best available autofocus? I'll keep my SL2 and use it and my M10-R for everything else, which was what they were designed for in the first place. As always, I look forward to your videos.

Being more into video, I noticed that the microphones on the SL3 seem to be pointing forward (at the top of the hump). I consider this to be better than the other configurations I have seen on many cameras. Could you try this test? Put the camera on a lazy susan and slowly spin it while playing a fairly consistent noise source a couple feet from it. If you could do this with another camera for comparison, we might get a sense of how directional the sound recording is.

And is fast? Mind you, I'm excited because I'm hoping this tech will also find its way to the rumored Lumix S1R II that is supposed to be released closer to the end of the year. I was thinking of adding the original S1R to my m43 stable... But it just wasn't enough. With 60MP, wireless tech/app and a nice boost in dynamic range, a Leica cousin might just do it. And the body looks VERY similar to the S5II and G9 bodies. Which is for accessories and compatibility. Especially for batteries. Yes We're living in a golden era of photography. Loved your review. Wonderful camera. I wholeheartedly endorse your final comment about an M series packed with the specs of the SL3! I recently bought my first Leica: a 1968 M3. The backstory is that I had used Canon up until the 5DIII. Yet I wasn’t attracted to Canon’s RF cameras. They don’t inspire me. Nor do any Sony cameras other than the RX1RII… but that is pricey, unsuitable for video and dated. In the meantime due to the videos by you and certain other reviewers, I dipped my toe in the MFT water with a LUMIX G9 (oh and I might have picked up a Fujifilm XE3 as well but that is off message here). It is the L2 partnership and the lovely little Panasonic Leica lenses I have procured, that led me to the M2. I was also interested to learn that Leica had a partnership with Minolta in the late 1970s. My first camera was the X-300 from just after that era. The upshot is I now listen intently to Leica news! I attribute it to the L2 partnership between Leica and LUMIX, and also reviewers like you who have widened my view of the photography market. So thank you! PS - Excellent music too!

You could say, “Blah blah, blah-blah-blah, boop, bing-bing,” and I’d still be enthralled. Love everything you do, here, Hugh. Thanks to you, I’ve slowly crept back to seeing and feeling photography as a highly personal art form, and not an act of simply ‘getting shots’. I echo your sentiments re operational simplicity. And your simpler Jobs paraphrase is simply better.

Hugh is the SL3 the same exact sensor in the Q3? And is the Triple Resolution feature also the same ?
@3BMEP8 ай бұрын
Can’t say with authority about how much or little they differ, but from a P&L perspective it would make sense that they be the same. Triple resolution? Yes.

I was eager to view your first impressions of the SL3, and is on spot. Aside note.. your "love" for Canon is truly evident. You can't be unpartial with Leica, and I get that, I´m also too, but on the other side of the scope, you can't hide the "love" for Canon.. I always wonder what they did to you. Does Canon have some fat bodies??? Just compare to the Nikon and they are considerably slimmer and lighter.

I am tempted to just blow 10 grand on a Leica sometimes to get the desire out of my system, but I always talk myself out of it. I think the brand is more attractive to me than the cameras when I really try to whittle down what I want. And I know I'm too lazy to sell it. 😂 I want to like this, but that's about it. It's just not tickling me as much as the reviewers, and I can't figure out what's causing the dissonance. 🤔

A PAIR of SL3s and you’re not even going to share ?? That is an endorsement of this lovely product, for sure. Lord knows I wouldn’t mind that hybrid AF, which was considerably overdue, or the other useful bits. But it has to be The Original Series for me rather than The Next Generation, because I’m all film these days and anyway I just bought a battery grip for mine and I bet that doesn’t fit. Getting Tamron in the L-Mount alliance would swing it though: I could ditch the Sony A9 (but not the big Canon). But I would wait for the SL3-S. You sat through every season of Voyager ? I wanted to cut my own throat after the first one. No, I am strictly Kirk and Spock and Bones, though Kirk would be on the wrong end of a Me Too litigation in 2024. Crew members, alien diplomats, even women-shaped androids: Kirk just couldn’t stop being Kirk. But Voyager was over-corrective: sterile, prim, hand-sanitised, Brycreemed and worthy. Floreat Leica: I don’t begrudge this brilliant company a penny of my money. I would buy an SL3-S if I weren’t so obsessed about my retirement fund and if it weren’t for the fact that my spotless SL2-S is still a lovely thing that is a pleasure to hold, look at and use.

I had to get over the first couple of episodes, but I was surprised by how much I came to enjoy Voyager. But you’re right: Kirk!

So no fingerprint recognition on the new power button? Asking for a friend. Please make my equipment safer. I am so happy that I am retired! I cannot ever afford, these super priced nonsense! Yes! I make images with long outdated gear! I use film, use my very old Leica-M3, Rolleiflex, some inexpensive CCD digitals. I quit pro work decades ago. I don't work for free, for a deadline of yesterday, bags of gear! I happily go out with a roll in my camera. Seldom, an extra lens! The Image is everything!

I bet the most sold Leica lenses by mount are: MFT. WHERE is a Leica MFT camera? Really small, unique experience, but top notch sensor and build quality. Form factor like a Panasonic GX1 - hot shoe EVF, Leice comptabile of course, weather sealed. And a b/w model... . Tilt-Screen? No thanks. makes it those few mm too thick. Paired with updated weather sealed Leica DG lenses like the famous Summilux 15mm 1.7 - would sell like "hot cakes" AS THERE IS NOTHING offered by Panasonic or Olympus Systems. I wonder who will buy Leica in 10, 20 or 30 years? For sure - generation SmartPhone-Throw-away-AI-cameras NOT... BTW: check what GX1 or GM1 are selling for - crazy, but for a reason.
@sanyihegedu8 ай бұрын
Leica value lies in an invisible fearure. Ruthless QA. It is cheaper to set wider tolerances before rejecting components. It is cheaper to use slightly lower quality. Beautiful photos can be taken with almost any camera. We buy what we can afford. Leica offers a solution for those wanting the bleeding edge of quality, at a matching price. Canon and Nikon also offer cutting edge pro lenses at astronomical prices. They fill the budget niche better than Leica. So do Fuji and Olympus/OM. At my age, gear weight and IBIS become critical. Olympus MFT meets that need within my budget. Every person has their own selection criteria. Existing manufacturers are meeting a very broad set of needs. They survive.

So they now have the specs of a Sony a7R V, down to the same sensor, in a body that has very few customizable buttons or wheels, and a menu system that is excruciatingly slow and unergonomic due to too-pervasive animations and touch-only interface. Even after all these years, I still fail to see what the “Leica magic” is all about, other than highfalutin wax poetic KZbin videos.
