Leica SL2 & SL2-S New Firmware | Eye Detection | All New Features

This is my detailed review of all new features for the Leica SL2 and Leica SL2-S coming with the new firmware 4.0 (for the SL2) and firmware 3.0 (for the SL2-S) which was just released by Leica. I had the firmware already some days earlier via a private download link from Leica to get familiar with the new firmware - many thanks to Leica Switzerland.

Leica would certainly have me back if they got their AF system up to the standards of Sony's AF - I really enjoyed everything about my Leica SL2 but AF-C was horrendous not being able to follow subjects, it only captures the first frame and there after misses everything almost like it's still Af-s. It's just odd that have 20 fps if it cant continuously focus

Thanks Daniel, your point is fair: Leica improved a lot their autofocus techniques in the last years, but Sony/Nikon/Canon in their flagship cameras still have an advantage.

@@photoeducationbydaniel I'll sign it right away. The SL is a fabulous camera, the AF is a NoGo. I believe that Panasonic will come up with something new and better and can only hope that Leica will adopt the technology. Sony just has a few years head start, that's when Canon and Nikon smiled at mirrorless systems. Now Nikon cooperates with Sony, Canon invested insane amounts of money to catch up with Sony. The Canon R3 can already keep up with the Sony A1, but Canon doesn't have the right lenses. Leica is a medium-sized company and can't afford to develop an AF system to this extent. I think Leica will either have to license a system or be where others are today in four years.

Love the new. Boxes as you explained for the eye AF I was hoping for a real world comparison between the two bodies you have, as to the stickiness and of course the accuracy of the eye AF. I would love to see results with percentage's of in focus capture with 85mm lens for people coming not only towards the lens but also moving at a angle or across the frame. Expressly interested in sharp eyeball focus.

I think the main update also on the SL2s is the raw video 12bit on the external recorder. I hope in the future it will do internally, that would be dope.

The update has a bug for Summicron lenses. Don’t upgrade until it’s fixed. Seems to work fine on the SL zooms - but not the Summicrons. Beware until bug is fixed.

Hey they forgot that if you have Auto iso in M It would be nice to have exposure compensation on the back wheel (manual lens, or AF lens with f-stop on the lens)

Question Please! Hello and thank you for this great video. Are the sl2-s raw files a little bit muted in colors when opening in LrC (Adobe Lr Classinc)? I feel like I have to always crank up a little saturation and vibrance in post.

Yes they are - Leica keeps color profiles quite flat intentionally, its ok to boost up vibrance and color a bit :)

Is the Leica SL2 capable of recording 4k60p internally in 10bit 4:2:2 with the new firmwares? And is it recording audio in 4k60p? Not shure about the actual informations with all this updates^^

Depends on when the camera was manufactured. Most of the time, 4.0 will be already installed. Otherwise, if you purchase it, ask the folks in the store to do the upgrade for you.

Probably just the light in the room - the LCD has no tint and looks right

Thanks for the video. After updating the firmware to 4.0, the shutter "sound" and camera function slows down when stopping the aperture down on my Summicron SL 35 and 90.
