Math, nice video. The best and most important part of the video is at 40min-Dynamic Range. To answer your question: I can tell Hasselblad restored over exposure better (clipping). Also, you did not mention the X2D had a delicate WB sensor. That is the only camera that has this (I think). Lastly, there is a parameter to consider when choosing a camera. That would be the “look” as in choosing jewelry. We human have a subconsciousness of choosing thing that looks “nice and pretty”. For me, the Hasselblad is a much better looking design. Thanks Math! I found the Hasselblad less complicated and much more fun to use. The dynamic range in my real life (snap)shots I could take in a short amount of time I had with the X2D were each more convincing to me than the SL3 results I brought home (which admittedly might be due to user's errors or mistakes). But with both cameras I followed the same principle: "Try and make it work. Read the manual later to see how intuitive = easy to use both are" My winner was the X2D, hands down 😊. Bad news for my wallet, though 😟.

Bottom line, both systems are great. Tried both for 2 afternoons, ended up going the Hasselblad route. Ended up costing me way too much (also went for the 25mm, 38mm.and 90mm), but decided that ultimate image quality (color rendering, the so called image rendering of that MF format we cannot really explain, and the depth of the file that can be worked with) against better AF, larger-more versatile range of lenses. Now Hasselblad still have opportunity to improve AF via future firmware upgrade, …and should do so asap,….been already waiting for some time.

I was stumbling over your review after I brought back a rented SL3, and before had a X2D rented for a shorter time. My takeaway is: I prefer the X2D way over the SL3. For SL3's "versatility" the price is "rather complicated menus". Handling far away from intuitive. And a German manual with English screenshots is a hard no-go for me! The SL3 has a rather noticeable shutter shock and it was not able to compensate it when it was on a tripod. I admit to gave up quickly searching for the electronic shutter as navigation in Leica systems is for insiders only. Yes, the L-mount alliance has a wider range of lenses, but I never take all my 20 with me. The shooting experience was much more pleasant on the X2D, never missed your beloved joy-stick. I simply don't need all the bells and whistles of the SL3. Which on the other side even doesn't have a focusstacking feature - in 2024! Every Lumix and Sigma has it. At this price point the Leica does show (in my eyes) "unforgiveable flaws" and the X2D just feels better. Highly subjective, but that's what photography is about. And did you compare the menu's readability in bright sunlight? No, of course, you had to work through the whole feature list.😄

I find the SL menus very simple and intuitive. Each to their own I guess. Concerning the manual - an English version can be obtained from Leica with a few clicks of the mouse.

@@dell-tone6472 Agree. I have a fully english manual (pdf) for the SL3 on my iPad and that works for me. Regarding readability and handling of the menu, I am likely so much used to Leica menus that I am a bad neutral observer on whether the menu is simple or complex :)

@@dell-tone6472 You didn‘t understand „ENGLISH screenshots in a German manual“! I would like to read your reaction if in your English manual were German screenshots! To which „SL“ menus you‘re referring? The SL2-S‘s menus were easier to to me, whereas the SL3‘s menus - grey texts on black background, the inaccessible entries in even darker grey - are close to impossible to read in bright sunshine, even with the body in between sun and LCD. And all in grey! Why not using coloured tabs to navigate better and? Yes, to each his own and I very gladly step aside to let others grasp their SL3 quicker.

On the 3 stop overexposure Hasselblad had slightly better recovery. Something I can’t get used to is the power button on the SL3. Sometimes it’s in sleep mode when I thought it was off or off when I wanted it in sleep. ✌️ out Maths

Thanks, the standby feature is actually a good one on the SL3. By quickly half-pressing the shutter button you see immediately if the camera is in standby or not: if it not wakes up, its switched off. If it wakes up, its on standby. I use this standby feature very often 😊

solid review. thank you. As an amateur I simply love the Hasselblad X2D. Its a delight to use. I also use a Nikon Z8 for everything else. Some improvements, AF of continuous shooting for birds etc would be very nice.

I have the X2D and prefer the physical handling of that body over the handling of the SL2 (which I therefore sold). I also prefer the simpler menu system of the X2D and I personally have no need for video. However, the autofocus of the Hasselblad system is extremely frustrating. So, I will purchase an SL3 (you show that the body improved since SL2) for the autofocus capability that you demonstrated and I hope to also benefit by using my many manual focus M system lenses on the SL3. Your video is very informative and helpful; it taught me to favor the X2D when traveling and shooting landscapes/buildings but to favor the SL3 when photographing people in motion.

It’s great, it’s the extension of your camera software. For eg if you change your WB on your camera you can see it change on the software too (when tethered) It’s what you see on your camera is what you get on Phocus with respect to the colours & contrast, the controls are great. Note: The face focus option disappears when tethered. The colour editor a bit laggy in general.

Importing to the computer through the Phocus software has two advantages. First, the 3FR raw format is converted into the fff raw format, which is about 30% smaller. The fff files can then be imported into Lightroom and I think there is a slight but definite improvement in color with this two-step procedure. I would not do any editing in Phocus.

Thank you Math: a great, detailed and usefull comparison . A couple a remarks : Hasselblad lens collection, I would have replaced the XCD 28 P by the 25 V as the wide frame lens reference they don’t play in the same category. I own both. Body quality : as regard to design i would say that the X2D is the more beautifully designed than the SL3 but in terms of robustness I am more confident in Leica material than in the Hasselblad line up (X2D and the new xcd lenses) which I see and experiment as far more fragile : I own the X2D since it was lauchned and the painting in the corners of the body is progressively vanishing. Never happened with my Leicas. For the rest I fully agree with you : the lack of joystick doesn’t facilitate focusing and focus tracking should be implemented. It is to the point that I am thinking seriously to move from Hassy to the GFX system. In my view it would worth if you made also thorough as comparison between both systems…as professional as the one you just made between SL3 and X2D !

Terrific video as always on your channel. I own both the X2D and SL3. The X2D is a recent purchase, replacing my traded-in manual focus M11+Visoflex (I retain an M11M). I'm primarily a landscape photographer and manual focus is my preference. I'm currently on a month-long sojourn in Scotland and Shetland, and because I bought the camera with a 55V lens, it is almost as portable as my M11 with a couple of lenses and *much* more portable than my SL3 with either the 24-90 or the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 attached. The SL3 is great where auto-focus is essential (e.g. grandkids and their sports), but for me, the real comparison is the M11+Visoflex vs. the XD2, and the latter is the winner so far. I love the XD2 menu system also.

I used the SL3 yesterday , and I was able to compare it to my X1D II which I think is a more fair comparison. They are closer in resolution, and the X1D II is still considered one of the best sensors on the market. Will be posting a side by side comparison this week!

Thanks for this nice and delicate review, which is full of detail, information and material. The difference over af performance is huge and incredible. As for the image result, I prefer the Leica images. Leica has more vivid, punchy and fun color tone compared to the natural color science from Hasselblad. It's also amazing to see that Leica hold the image detail so well under the circumstance of smaller sensor size, I think the fascinating and incredible Leica lens does a lot of help for this.

I really enjoy your detailed technical reviews. I agree with most of what you said about these two cameras. I have used the SL system with the APO SL prime lenses. I think, however, that this combination is somewhat heavier than the Hasselblad X2D with the V lenses. But anything the SL system can do, the Sony A7R5 can do better - better autofocus, better tracking, lighter lenses of equal quality (the Sony G-master lenses are superb), two FAST (Compact flash A) and IDENTICAL storage cards. Having two different storage formats, one a fast compact flash B and other an SD card is, in my view, a huge disadvantage to the Leica SL3. This arrangement makes it difficult to use one card as a backup. Therefore, my Leica SL system has been replaced by the Sony A7R5 with a few primes. The true sweet spot for Leica is the M system, which I simply love along with its jewel-like M lenses. I use both the M11 and the M11 monochrom and occasionally the Q3. I bought the Hasselblad X2D with the full complement of V lenses just for the image quality even if getting the image can be more difficult. I agree with all your comments regarding the limitations of the Hasselblad focusing system and I wish Hasselblad allowed for auto iso in manual mode as all other major manufacturers do. On the V lenses (perhaps on others as well), it is possible to fine tune focus after autofocusing. Unfortunately, however, the focusing aid does not come up automatically when adjusting the focus. Hasselblad should correct this in a firmware update. With regard to handling, the Hasselblad is, by far, the best camera I have used. It feels completely natural in the hand. There is absolutely no need to acquire any accessory grips. This is certainly not true of the Leica system. The M cameras need accessory grips if they are not to slip out of your hand. The SL3 is better but the Hasselblad has an excellent built-in thumb grip which the SL3 lacks. Also, 1Tb fast internal storage along with a fast compact flash B card makes the Hasselblad storage system far superior to Leica's approach. Finally, I think the Hasselblad IBIS is superior to Leica's. If properly braced, I can shoot the 90 mm V at 1 second with tack sharp results. With regard to the quality of results, in my opinion Hasselblad offers more accurate colors straight out of camera, particularly on skin tones. In tricky situations, when you are shooting portraits of two or more individuals with different skin tones, the Hasselblad files are far better than the Leica files, whether from the SL system or the M system. I would suggest that anyone interested try the following simple experiment, which I have tried at the Bellevue Leica Store. Shoot the red Leica logo on the Hasselblad, the SL3 and the M11. Compare the color straight out of camera. I think the Hasselblad has the most accurate color. Thanks for an excellent and thought-provoking review.

Thanks for the comparison. It was very interesting. What I like about the Hasselblad is how it feels in the hand. It feels just right. Also the way they crafted the camera is really nice. Since I have not put my hands on the SL3 yet I cannot tell if it feels the same. What I like about both cameras is the simplicity. Both manufacturers are minimalistic. No one needs a million options within your camera. The fact that Leica has so many options when it comes to lenses is a big plus for me. The Hasselblad lenses are really good, but they should offer more options. Especially now since they produced a camera which is not just meant for a professional photographer like the H Series was. As long as they do not improve the AF in the Hasselblad / the amount of lenses I think I would go with Leica. I am not sure, if Leica has an issue with tethering, but Hasselblad does. The USB-C keeps disconnecting and makes it very tough for a professional to work properly. It is a shame in my opinion. Either way. If I would be thinking about buying one of the cameras i would rent them in advance and test them in an Environment I work in. Just to be sure. Anyway, long video, long answer. Have a good one. One issue with CAF in the Hasselblad is the lens motors. Stepping motors would usually be intended to move things very specific distances. It would be a poor choice for lenses intended to do CAF which I would expect to have linear motors. I am just awaiting delivery of my new X2D and 55V. One reason I chose that was that I do not and never will shoot video. I do not need to pay for the design and software and live with any compromises shoehorning video into my stills camera creates.

I considered buying the X2D. I wanted one camera system for landscape and walk around street photography. The X2D autofocus is a dealbreaker. Hasselblad lost one customer. I was so impressed by the IBIS and the image quality. I don’t want to travel with two systems nor do I have the budget for it. I think the issue might be the processing ability of their chip. It may not have the ability to maintain AF computational power in parallel. It has to readout the image sensor constantly at 60 fps or more to track the subject or eyes and maintain focus. You might have to wait for X3D with a more powerful chip to offer a better AF system.

I have found for myself the SL3 was just a much better overall system. I have had the SL3 since its release and still have the SL2 as back up. I love the 24-90 and have learned to deal with the weight. I have been adding the APO's as well. with the 38, 35 and 90. I also have the 90-280 and it is amazing. I have have the 50Summilux with is also big and heavy. When I want to trim down weight I can adapt my M lenses or just take out the M system. The Hasselblad has amazing colors, however 80% of my work is BW. If all I shot was landscape the Hasselblad would make since, however just to slow for a majority of my work. I think like all cameras, they are tools and you need to choose which works best for you. Should just get out of the way. Most cameras take a few months to really get comfortable with. Even when just minor changes from a SL2 to the SL3, need to spend time fully understanding the differences. I had the X2D for a few months and it just did not work for me. I still have my 500cm and will never get rid of it.

It's a mystery to me why so many camera bodies have sharp edges where the paint rubs off so easily. My Sony A7r4 is particularly bad for this. A little rounding off of the body form like say Canon, makes paint chips less likely.

Thanks - so far my X2D has only minor traces of use, would call it "mint condition". But I also pay a lot of attention to my gear, being not overly rough. Likely your comment is spot-on, if a shooting gets rough and the camera is frequently in touch with the environment, that black coating will be a vulnerable spot 😊

Neither of these cameras suit my needs. But, if I had to choose, I would choose the Leica. One reason is that I can adapt old SLR lenses, and I know that their image circles will cover the Leica sensor. But there are other reasons. The Hasselblad does have a bit more DR in the highlights, obviously. But, if I wanted medium format, I would go with a Fujifilm GFX.

I shoot with the Leica SL3 in the 4:3 format. I get about 54 mpx photos in that format. I enjoy that aspect ratio and I don't mind the loss of about 7 mpx on the sides. When it comnes to colors, the differences are really minute between those 2 cameras. I was thinking the Hasselblad has a massive advantage in color reproduction. But as I see from this review and others, that is not the case

I would like to see more color comparisons between the two cameras. Because it is said that the Hasselblad has the best natural colors. Coming back to your comparison and the visualization on the screen with LR: Is it right to choose Adobe Color to compare the images of the two competitors? Or would it have been better to choose the camera profile of the respective camera to see the difference? Isn't it an interpretation of Adobe taking the information from the original RAW/DNG file from each camera? Nevertheless, great job. Thanks for it.

Thanks for your detailed reviews. I recently watched one youtuber said about X2D. Wiggle and wobble between body and lens.. In fact a few youtubers mentioned this problem. And 1TB SSD failure possibility and repairing hassle with the company.. some complained paint chippings at the bottom. HNCS is a big plus from Hassi.. Versatility for Hassi is not good as Leica.. Thanks - I can comment on the wiggle and wobble between body and lens. Indeed is the connection between lens and body not as firm as it used to be on the X1D series. I would not call it wiggle and wobble ... but there is play on the camera-lens mount which should not be there.

For me my need for captureone dictates what I can own & if the software used right does a brilliant job with respect to colours & workflow speed. I loved the X2D but in some instances just didn’t work for me especially what captureone / Leica combo could do together. I look forward to many more reviews.

Hi there! You can use the lcd as a joystick on x2d when u using evf and makes it more comfortable than a joystick on top or the wheels.

What's really frustrating is that the Q3 has this feature, you can use the entire screen as a joystick in Touch AF in EVF mode. They have removed this feature on the SL3, you can no longer drag the AF point - just set it. Attempting to drag brings up an AF-mode quick settings menu, which you can't turn off without turning off all Touch AF features. It's so annoying because the joystick on the SL3 is also terrible compared to other cameras (you can't move diagonally!). AF-s on the Q3 with this feature is infinitely faster than the SL3.

Dear Math, could you please consider to make a video about using Alpa lenses (made by Rodenstock) on Hasselblad's 907X 100C? Alpa has made an adaptor for Hasselblad X system. The adapter is called Alpa HXD Adapter. That should also fit a 907X 100C. Since you are in Zurich I wonder if you could easily borrow equipment from Alpa. I am sure there are other audiences who want to use German made, genuine medium format lenses instead of XCD lenses that are made in Japan.

I may be wrong, but unfortunately, Hasselblad is owned by DJI ( yes, they make drones) and the newer XCD lenses are actually made in China. Also they are designed by another company from Japan ( forgot the name sorry 😞) This being said its still a great system for this who can afford it. In my opinion is not very professional 🙄. So many of us this days has other needs ( fast autofocus) for professional services. I simply can't imagine myself at a wedding with a Hasselblad. Or doing street/ jurnalism foto wit it.😅😅😅

You made some bold claims about the weather sealing - obviously the Leica has an IP rating but as far as I know the Hasselblad does not, but you seem to place them on the same footing in this regard. Just curious if you have some inside information, or how you came to have such high confidence in the Hasselblad.

One advantage of MF is much more flexibility in cropping while retaining resolution. Also, if one regularly shoots square format the MF sensor is much larger than an FF sensor using the same aspect ratio. Personally, the Hasselblad's colours and overall 'feel" from its images is the best I've seen. I'm not overly worried about AF because if I want blazing fast AF, I'll use a Nikon Z9 or similar.

Has nothing to to with the video I know, but still, here goes... Among my 30+ cameras I just bought a Leica T701 in mint condition from Japan. It is just so cool looking and feels great. Plus you can put all those Leica L lenses on it. BUT, BUT, BUT I am finding it not as practical than my other recent acquisition, a Sony 6400. The Sony has a viewfinder! It has profiles! It has focus peaking etc etc etc. I can put Leica and a bunch of other lenses on it as well. Should I keep the Leica (might appreciate in value) or not...? Thanks. PS I have high end cameras incl. several Hasselblad so my problem is a real 1st world problem.

I expected to see more in-depth about image quality: low light, colors and details preservation, noise, ISO invariance. Basically answering the question if medium format is still superior to modern full frame sensors, or whether larger medium format size is compensated with more modern tech used in full frame sensors. Or maybe full frame is even better since physical pixels size is the same (100MP vs 60MP and 44x33 vs 24x36 essentially make physical pixel size on both sensors the same). From clipping highlights I can tell that Hasselblad has tiny bit wider dynamic range (you could recover more highlights which could be because of lower base iso as well), but there is so much more to test with these two sensors while menus and feature sets are covered a million times in various reviews already (even your own). And I’m sure people can check list of lenses each system has themselves, moreover that there were no insights. Whilst not everyone can have two cameras next to each other taking photos and comparing the output.

Thanks, at a certain point I needed to decide what to include in a video of about almost an hour and what I keep out and separate. As said in Part #1, I know both cameras very well and the tangible difference in image quality is minor and not significant. Leica has the better tech embedded and the X2D has a tiny (!) bit of an advantage based on a larger sensor and a really good color science. But the color science of Leica is also very good, way off better than what you get from many other camera brands. On highlight recovery, I actually agree in what you said. In Part #2 you see this when overexposing by only 2 stops: the Hassy image does a better job recovering the structure of the LED triangles in the back although the colors are lost in both images, the Leica image and the Hassy image.

Maybe I’m crazy, but the color tint on both photos is glaringly obvious to me. Also, the SL3 is the warm image due to the red/magenta tint. The X2D has a slight green cast making it the cooler image. Not sure why you think the X2D image is the warmer one as it is very clearly not.

Scratching my head but fully respect your view and comment. For me the Hassy image looks "warmer" but maybe we should agree first what "warmer" really means ...

@@mathphotographer that’s extremely fair. How would you define “warm”, and why do you see the X2D image as the warmer one? For me, if any image leans more to the red/orange side I consider it warm. If it trends to the blue/green side I consider it cool.

@@jlehm Actually, I guess that's the misunderstanding :) For me "warmer" means more yellowish ... "colder" means more blueish, and purple and green I call "tint". Thanks for clarifying where your statement came from, I actually do not think we see the images differently, we just used some different words for it :)

To get full benefits of the HB color science, 3fr/3f with Phocus is a pain for post production and a price to pay in order to get color better than Leica. Holding the upgrade from SL2 to SL3 given the number of post launch challenges. Leaning towards keeping the X2D and move away from the SL.

Honestly, I never got really comfortable with Phocus, I am sooo much bound in my workflow to Adobe. Maybe a mistake and I should try harder 😅

Fun fact: the pixel density is bigger on the x2d. Over 7/cm2. Leica is under 7. ;)

If medium format was really medium format it would matter but the difference between 24x36mm and 33mmx44mm is hardly the same as even 24x36 versus 45x60 let alone the larger old medium formats of 60x60, 60x70 and 60x90. It will be nice when manufacturers go back to actual medium format sensors so we can get similar looks to what we had in the film days.

Phase One and the Hasselblad H6D come really close to what you have in mind. But the Phase One IQ4 is super expensive and not made for the masses I guess.

Favorites Menu on the SL3? Nope. For no good reason Leica eliminated the favorites menu that used to be on the SL2. It is a serious deficiency in the new menu structure that hopefully Leica look correct.

I‘ve had both and ended up choosing the SL3 over the x2D. The SL3 is more versatile, has a more complete and cheaper lens portfolio, has better menus (that‘s subjective, I also own the M11-p, Q3 and like the similar logic) and has much better AF. I could tweak SL3 images to look very similar to the ones on the x2D. Yes, the x2d‘s images have some subtlety and more resolution than the SL3 images, but only nerds like us may believe that we see something. My 5c

As usual, a terrific review! There are a couple of things, however that weren’t covered in my opinion. First the XTD has no remote release capability. You must keep your finger on the shutter for continuous shooting. Therefore, landscapes that require precise timing (e.g., waves breaking over rocks, intervals of wind calm to reduce leaf/flower/grass movement, portrait shooting on a tripod, or any other photography that requires precise timing) are not possible. There is significant camera shake if a tripod is used. The original manual stated there was remote/cable release capability. That reference was removed a few months later in an update to the manual. This is a big issue for landscape photographers such as I IMO. Second, to take full advantage of HNCS and Hasselblad lens correction, you need to use their Phocus RAW processing software on the 3FR native file format. Lightroom cannot process these files until conversion to .fff files and uses the standard Adobe color profile. This does not allow the use of the strongly touted benefit by Hasselblad for their pixel level color calibration efforts. So RAW file processing workflow misses some of the benefits of light recovery, masking, etc. available in LR. I also believe Capture One cannot even process any format of Hasselblad RAW file. For these reasons I have not bought this camera. From a huge fan of your videos, Bob

Its not really accurate to judge the Hasselblad's "auto-focus" based on..."eye tracking" or "continuous"... And that you didnt compare the S-AF.... shooting, .. is disappointing. You also left out the most important ISSUE with this Hasselblad....... And that is..... When you press the Shutter.......how long is the shutter LAG... as that is what is horrible about the X series.. and you said nothing about this... And certainly the lack of Shutter Lag in the Lecia, as compared to the Hasselblad... ..............and you said nothing.

Hasselblad X2D Leaf shutter, Colour and skin colour is the reason I went for the Hassey… Bigger sensor with smoother transitions both on colour and from sharp to unsharp is also a good reason..

I don't have to watch the whole video to tell you the X2D is the best image quality hands down. I own the X2D and the M11, in the end both cameras serve me for 2 purposes and I shoot them both in equally different scenarios. If kit size and weight are your main concern you might want to keep the Leica, but once Hasselblad comes out with a P series long lens then they might be equal if not better. You can probably get away with just using the 45P and 28P for the X2D if you don't need longer focal lengths as they're compact and have fantastic image quality. I love the M System but if I was just using that for everything I think it would drive me crazy, I'm a big fan of the rangefinder but at times I much prefer the X2D's gorgeous 1.0 EVF.

I would be interested to know how quick the Hasselblad is in the studio when shooting dancers. Specifically how quickly it recovers with the buffer. I have found the mirrorless medium format cameras have a tendency to overheat when continuously shooting in the studio.I use the SL2 S for video and the Leica S 007 for dance photography. The medium format Leica is excellent as it never overheats (because it has a terrible screen on the back and is a SLR) and the batteries last all day. Like the Hasselblad I can sync the flash at 1/1000th which is perfect for freezing dancers.

How I wish Hasselblad could include a back-button focus for the X2D. Well....there's always a compromise for everything right.....

Hassy does have a back button focus option. Just put the camera in Manual focus mode and use the AF-D button on the back to focus and the shutter button to release the shutter. The AF-D button does work to focus in Manual focus mode.
